Manstein's revenge

This Group Build is winning!

I want to spray-paint my entire body black and fly with the bats in the night sky...

Isn't that taking the whole Aryan 'superman' thing a little far??? Indifferent

Gee I pop out for the weekend and miss all kinds of coolness:

Jbrady: The Beau looks fantastic! Love the copper cowling bands and the paint chipping looks spot on.

Trey: What can I say? Another beautiful build. Love the mottling and all around great job.

Doogs: Wow the sketter turned out great. Love the streaking and the cool looking work you did on the exhausts.

Satch and Herc: Great looking work guys, keep the pics coming!

I did get some work done over the weekend. The P-61 is coming together, I've been treating her like a limited run kit. Will get photos up when I get the main parts together.

I've got some more pics of Her Schnaufer's mount.

Pre Shading with Floquil Grimy  Black.

RLM 76 base coat.

RLM 75 on the top sides.

More tomorrow.

Doogs, nice lookin mossie. Looks better than mine anyway (not hard) i like the satin finish. One suggestion though. For a bit more of a dirty looks streak some matt over it. Ive read in several places that early on they rubbed coal dust onto the aircraft to give it a really matt look. Right up until they discovered it made it Light up under searchlights lol.

Hi Greg, even though I haven't got underway yet on this GB, can you put me down for a fourth build? I got my hands on a Tamiya 1/72 JU 88 C and I think this qualifies?

Cheers

Hercmech, your Gekko interior pieces look good.  Looking forward to seeing them glued together.

Cheers,

Greg

Doogs,

Came out looking great. Thanks for the tips on the streaking and the black paint job. I have the same kit, along with the Beaufighter, Widow, and a P-38 I was going to do in a black scheme. I figured it would be easy... but after seeing the difficulty doing the black gave you, I may have to readress my plans.

I love the dirt you got on the struts, they came out very realistic and not over done, as is the case with a lot of weathering like that. Great job on a your build.!

And...she's done.

Here's Tamiya's De Havilland Mosquito NF Mk.II, dressed up for service with the 157th squadron based out of England in 1942:

Close up of the forward fuselage. Also, a better view of the streaking on the wing surfaces.

Doing exhaust staining on a black aircraft is hard! I'm really happy with the way the exhaust shrouds, tires and gear struts came out, though.

Overall, a very enjoyable build, hiccups and all. I don't know that I'd call the Mossie one of Tamiya's best kits - it's a very good kit, but IMO still a step or two behind the masterful P-47 series.

I'd also caution anyone looking for an "easy" build to not take on a black aircraft! The paint turned out to be the most challenging aspect of the build...who would have guessed?

Doogs: Looks great, what did you use to get the streaking? I might have missed it, so sorry if it is a redundant question.

No problem - don't think I mentioned it. Basically, a filter wash of artist oils brushed in the direction of airflow. I used raw umber, then lamp black on top of that.

Once the filters were laid down, but still wet, I went back over with this crazy brush I found at Hobby Lobby awhile back - the Aqualon Wisp:

The "fingers" do a great job with streaking effects...and I figured it'd fit well for a Mossie operating out of England, what with all the drizzle.

I just scored a Tamiya Mossie NF for $40 on consignment at my LHS.  Doogs did such a good job on his that I just had to have one.  Also got a Tamiy F4U-1A for $18.

Sweet! Got a -1A in my stash that I snagged for about that price...

Looking forward to seeing another Mossie - but whatever you do, I HIGHLY recommend running down the Ultracast tailwheel. There's not a lot wrong with the kit, but man, the tailwheel is rubbish!

Doogs great to see it coming together after all the trouble, looks great.

I finished it up this morning after a few issues with the canopy fit. Not a bad kit but somewhat lacking in detail areas such as the gear bays and cockpit interior. Fit was all in all real decent.

Okay...feeling like things are moving back in the right direction. A heavy black filter toned things back a lot, but I had this weird thing going on for awhile where the panel lines around the engines and ailerons turned this light tan color. It'd vanish under the black wash, but come back as it dried. Until I bombed them with a really thick black. That seems to have knocked them back.

Also fixed the aerials.

Lastly, I pigmented up the exhaust shrouds tonight. The base is Alclad Exhaust Manifold, topped with MIG Burnt Steel Blue topped with MIG rust.

Tomorrow it's on to the final semi-gloss clear coat, then removing the canopy masking, attaching the gear doors and exhaust shrouds, and final staining.

jbrady outstanding finish, the Beau looks great! Really like the paint chipping ,nicely done Sir!

Doogs wow another set back ,that bites. We gotta get some better luck going for ya!

Hercmec slow and steady gets it every time, looking good

I finished up the office after adding some pe and scratch built rudder pedal supports. Not true scale to this aircraft but the lacking detail needed something and I was'nt shelling $80 out for a office upgrade.

Hi Greg, I noticed on the first page my Mossie has been taken down. I'll still do it possibly later in the year. I would also like to add to my 1/48 Dragon Bf 110, the 1/48 F-117 Tamiya with the CMK detail set. I would like to cross this one over from my Stealth GB.

Cheers

Here are some shots of the pit parts still on the sprue. This one is going slower than even I expected (and I am a super slow builder)

Doogs: I've been thinking about the black car thing ever since I put on the first coat of paint. Funny though, I really didn't have a problem. I have a built in reason for not adding antennas on my builds... the cats don't need any extra temptations.

I used MM aluminum applied with a 00 brush, toothpicks (very tedious), and dry brushing for the paint chipping. Very good tip from the Pro Modeler site is to use a flat color under the silver to tone it down. you apply the flat to the area you want to chip then apply the metalic. I like the effect.

[Insert expletives here]

Frustrated with the Mossie this morning.

Last night I got a start on the weathering, and I'm not altogether happy with it. The streaked filter that's worked really well on other builds looks like crap - forgot the whole "black cars show dirt" thing I guess, Think I'll try a black filter on top to tone it down.

Also attatched the stretched sprue aerials, then had one snap on me during the snap-taut phase. THEN realized I had the aerial location wrong. I'd been thinking tail and fuselage spine:

but the lower aerial actually attaches to the port stabilizer.

So now I've got a hole in the fuselage to fill. Ugh.

jbrady - that thing looks sweet! Love the copper cowl rings and the paint chipping! Just curious, what'd you use for the chipping?
