Weathering GB - 2/1/2011 - 1/31/2012

I have an additional entry that I'm finishing simply to make myself feel better about the Stuka I did...Its ARII's 1/48 F6f Hellcat. Its all together, just needs paint...Here's a tease:

Nothing like a decrompression build after a tough project Oddmanrush! Looking good

Had more seaplane fun. The pit is starting to shape up...

First painted the IP,... drybrush and future for the dials. Even tried to incorporate an artificial horizon while i was busy:

Turning the ip around we see nice holes just begging for some wiring...

So i did

And with the bits and pieces i already had it comes together like this. Still have the rear end to complete as well as a firewall up front:

some more pics of the Ausf C...decided to take it up a notch, After primer, it took a coat of Metallic Grey, some salt, hull red, more salt, a base of dark yellow, then brown and green camo. So far it has some dot filters(raw umber, german ochre, a little green, and earth colored oils). Gonna do a few washes, mount the guns, a little drybrushing, blend the chips and finish those God awful, give you an aneurysm pain in the @#@ tracks. oh yeah, figures, too. Thinkin it'll be wrapped up in a week or two....

Before I order the Tiger, I need to put this one on a base....I really have come to like building structures or fasade's(spelling) from scratch, so I'm open to suggestions....any ideas ??

I usually build my structures out of foam core board that you can purchase from a craft store, like Michael's or AC Moore.

Oddman, thank you much. I've got the building technique down pretty well. I use 1/4" foamboard, if you put drywall mud on it and dont float it flat, it looks like plaster after a base color and a few washes. Or I use cork and cut individual bricks. I'm not so much after the how, more of the "what" ???

My SU-122 is finally done! I weathered it with a number of washes, a secret technique I use for snow and ice, and Martha Stewart (???) pigments.  As you will see, I put some gauze camo netting on.

The Pzh-2000 is coming along well, and I should have pics of that up within the month (school).

You guys have certainly been busy in here lately... Great work I'd better get cracking and finish off this week i think

Hey doogs, can you add a P-51 to my roster? Ive only started to apply the foil, so not much weathering yet. I'm planning on a chipped paint and used appearance for this Mustang to practice some weathering techniques. Here is where it sits now, if its too far along just let me know.

Okey dokey, the postman has rung more than twice this week! He's sort of worked out my next build for me. Got a lovely package this week from LuckyModels, has a Block 50 1/48 Tamiya F16C/J in the box but more importantly has the remaining sets for my Bf 109E-3!

So up next for this build is this lovely kit from Eduard. As you can see from the photo, I've added quite a bit of AM. I've added the Master Details gun barrels, Eduard Bomb set, Brassin wheels, Verlinden maps, Quickboost ammunition box, Eduard PE interior set, Eduard metal landing gear and finally the Aires radio set.

I've since discovered from buying this kit that I much prefer 1/48 scale, having said that 1/32 is great but a little too large sometimes. This is also going to be part of a diorama so I have to really plan ahead the display position in the house.

Anyway, I can hopefully start this build this weekend and it's going to be a long one.

The preliminary painting has been applied to the Mustang. Some of the paint is actually over areas of foil, so when I begin chipping paint, it will show through. You can see some of the paint chips on the black strips on the bottom of the wing.

When I masked areas of paint, I used regular blue painters tape straight from the roll. I am going for a chipped mustang in need of a new paint job here. So most of the final paint chipping you see will be authentically missing paint.

Even with in my absence ,I do make progress. Here's pics

To represent where the sealing tape had been along the panel lines, on top I mixed MM field drab (1 drop) to faded olive ( 3 or 4 drops) thinned down to flow easily  and applied with a 10 0 brush . Panel lines on the bottom were done with  thinned  neutral gray , applied with again with the 10 0 brush. Very tedious but   effective.

Next came a coat of Future in prep for decals. 

At first I thought it took my color ones too dark, but then gloss will often appear darker . Further weathering will tie it all together and lighten the tone somewhat also. 

On go the decals. 

Currently going through stencil hell (LOL). They're very delicate and barely show which will actually help give the look of the stencils being worn off in various stages. 

I plan on lightly sanding over everything with 1000 grit to help weather the decals. Then a sealing coat off Future followed with filters and some final washes will give the decals a nice weathered appearance. 

Can't wait to get some dull coat on this thing.

Basically trying to represent the discoloring from the sealing tape used when the birds were shipped back in the day. I've heard that Pacific P-61 Black Widows also used the same system of an early version of duct tape and varnish to seal all panels, rivets, etc. 

 My method was to airbrush the base OD/neutral gray paint scheme, followed by " fading" working in some white and a light green pastels to the center of panels on top, white and light gray pastels  on bottom. The decal prep coat of Future reduced the intensity of the pastels somewhat , but I like how it gave it a splotchier ( is that a word?) look. Especially on the under sides. 

 Then a thin dark wash over the panel lines where it appears some sort of cleaner was used to remove tape residue. Next  I used a very fine tip brush to flow a thin line of faded olive and field drab on the upper panel lines . I used neutral gray on the lower panel lines to replicate where the actual tape was applied on the original aircraft. My reference pics don't seem to show the effect on the national or group markings .   

Now that I've got all the little stencil decals on , I'll lightly scuff sand with an extra fine grit sandpaper to give some wear to the markings, mainly the stencils. I want them to look a bit worn off. After that , I'll give a sealing coat of Future followed by some filtering to bring it all together . Finally a pin wash off black /brown from my daughters water color paints to the recessed panel lines before a coat or two of clear flat. 

 BTW  oddmanrush. Currently building the Arii F6F-3 for the Alleycat GB . But , it's not exactly an OOB build. Pretty much scratched the cockpit and am reworking the gear wells to look more accurate. I'll be getting back on that one when I finish my Lightning. It's a nice kit for the value and have read a comparison of different kits Hellcat "grins" . The Arii/Otaki kit is one the more accurate grins. I look forward to seeing yours complete and I also like your Stuka . Gives me an idea as I recently added the Revell Ju-87D to my stash.

Howard, thanks for the explanation. Certainly an effective method for weathering! I'm anxious to see it completed.

The Arii kit is nice and offers much room for extra detail as you are doing. This was another one my dad built that he passed on to me to paint. Once I get it all painted and weathered, I'll send it back to him. I haven't been able to return to it yet...shame how life gets in the way of hobbies eh?

Owl, I concur, you do fine work on foiling aircraft! You do fine work all around actually! Keep it up.

Some great work in this GB! Wow, everyone's work has been outstanding so far!

Ok, it's been a few months since I have finished my Zero, the first bird for this GB. I started on the Bf 109 today. Some great add ons in the Profi Pak  Eduard kit but the extra Eduard PE set I bought  just takes it to the next level.

So after some messy knife work, scraping and cutting away the detail;

Lots of fiddly PE bending and CA gluing;

I think the results speak for themselves. The PE replacements for the un-detailed plastic parts I cut off is gonna make this one special cockpit!

Here are a couple pics showing the fading I did on the paint. Its subtle, but gives the green a splotchy look. The first pic is basic paint, the second has some decals and the fading.

Got most of the cockpit components glued together. The Eduard extras give it a nice touch, I've also added some extra cabling and wiring.

Okay everyone...I have to apologize bigtime for not being as on top of things as I should. It's just...life's hectic at the moment, and every time another post pops up here, I fall that much further behind, and the idea of catching up just gets that much more daunting.

But...I'm bound and determined to do it! In the meantime...I miss playing in this GB! The Achilles and Pup seem to be moving at glacial paces...even more glacial now that the Achilles' friuls came in...

Richard - the Ar 196 looks gorgeous! I agree, those molded belts are pretty bad. Have to imagine Quickboost or Ultracast or someone's working on a resin seat to address that.

Brutus - That is some aggressive salt chipping! I thought it might look a bit strong, but I like it a lot...I tend to prefer beat-up vehicles anyway!.

Personman - nice! I keep telling myself I'm going to do a dio, then I always find a way to make an excuse about it...looks awesome! Only thing I'd suggest would be wintering up the street some, too, otherwise the AFV looks a bit out of place.

Daddy1 - VERY AWESOME! I believe that's the closest I've seen to that one shot showing the panel sealant weathering on the wings.Very well done!

Casper - having built the E-7, I can see at once where the PE has added to the cockpit over and above the included fret. I'll be curious to see what you think of some of the build...specifically that front end. You going to build it open-cowl?

Well i'm calling this 190 finished, i can't find my clear green and red paints for the nav lights so i'll pick up some more next time i'm at the LHS and finish it of then....

A picture is worth a thousand words so....

It's called a preshade, i sprayed on the dark grey around the lines and when i shoot on the uppercolours i make sure some of it still shows through...after that the panels lines are accentuated with a thinned watercolour wash(oil works just as well) and the excess is removed with a damp Qtip, starting from the leading edge i drag the q tip in the direction of the airflow which causes faint streaks...
