Nice to see this GB still hummin' along! Great work by everyone, from the P-38, the P-51, the Ar-196, all the way to the salt-chipped treaded thingy (I'm obviously a plane guy Wink ).

...and Julez!!! Holy cow, man!! That one was definitely worth the wait. Outstanding work my friend! Yes

DoogsATX

Casper , you going to build it open-cowl?

Absolutely! The Eduard extra PE set has a lot of nice grills and buckles and extra bolts and stuff for the engine. I also forked out for the QB ammunition box and there is also some PE for that. So the whole front of cockpit and engine will be totally displayed. In the context of the diorama this is the section that is being 'worked on'

Could I sign her up for this GB?

Thanks

Ive put the completed details on the mustang, now. Once the decals were applied, I followed with a sludge wash to start the weathering process. That was followed by paint streaking: I blobbed tan paint randomly on the airframe. A paintbrush dipped in thinner helped steak and blend everything together.

The exhaust was built up in layers: I applied the sludge wash in the direction of the exhaust stain, then went over it with black dry brushing. The gun blast stain was also achieved in this manner. Once the streaking had dried, I applied a flat coat to the pained areas and markings.

I chipped the propeller with a rough sanding stick after the decals were applied to get some simulated wear. The places where bare plastic was revealed got metallic paint.

Here are some detail shots of the result:

Mike, thanks mate for the comments, it's very much appreciatedYes

Baron, yeah all airbrushed, when you get your A/B going you will find as you progress you'll use it more and more...I only use a paintbrush now to pick out small details in the office and to add washes or weathering powders...

I've revised my first entry.  I've added some rust, snow, and mud.  I've also given the diorama a title: "Hunting the Hunter."  I'll post pictures once my brother visits again with his Canon Rebel T2i.

Oh yeah i'll resume work on this one in a couple of months, need to finish a couple of other builds first...

It looks like it's close to being finished but it's not, all the engine and gunbay panels will be open...It will have the same cowl colours as the Tamiya kit and marked again as a Staff A/C from JG1...

callsignOWL-  The Mustang looks good .  I noticed you cut and repositioned the rudder as well as dropping the flapsYes. That's just what happened  with the 51 when the hydraulic pressure bled off. Keep up the good workToast

Julez72- Eats One of the best fighter designs ever 2 cents.

Got some fresh pics  continuing the finishing process.

After the decals , gave the Lightning a coat of Future and allowed to dry overnight in prep for the filters. Then it's one the scariest things to do. Putting splotches of paint all over a perfectly good finish.

Instead of artist oils , I use Model Master enamels ,simply because it's on hand and works.

I start by randomly dabbing appropriate colors all over the model. Using darker tones underneath and more white and yellow on the topsides. Looks pretty bizarre at this stage, but there is method here.

Next step , using a broad (1/4- 1/2 inch) flat ,soft brush moistened with turpentine. I blend the "dots" working top to bottom on vertical surfaces of the fuselage and in the direction of airflow on the wings and elevators.

Cleaning the brush often , I keep working the filters till all that remains is just a aged effect. Similar to looking through a pair sunglasses compared to colored glass. Not even enough of the dots left to call it a hint of color.

Not sure how well it shows in the photos, the effect is quite subtle. But, that's the intention, to give the finish a more aged look. One word of caution , go easy and take care not to wear through the paint .

I figure the birds at Henderson field got pretty grubby underneath and pretty bleached on top. Did a heavy sludge wash on bottom with black and brown from my kids watercolors plus some dark brown pastel ground into the mix. A lighter wash of the same mix on top. Allowed to dry and wiped down with a damp paper towel, again following gravity on the sides , airflow on the wings .

After bit more dry time < I over coated with a clear flat . I like Testors Dullcoat , but have found Krylon Matte Finish1311 at Michaels and Walmart. It costs about the same as a can of Dullcoat but is three times the size. I spray it straight from the rattle-can. It does warn about excessive multiple coats can give a frosted appearance , but I use that to enhance the sun bleached effect on the finish.

Need to add some paint chips with MM aluminum and silver Prisma color pencil. The last of the weathering (exhaust stains , oil leaks, mud , etc ) will come after I get wheels under her and some other final assembly tasks done.

Scott - apologies for the delayed response. I don't manage to get online much over the weekends these days. Your Sd Kfz is more than welcome! Looking forward to it! I'll get it added to the front page here in a bit.

Julez and Owl - great work, you two! Definitely nice to see two legends treated so well! Both of your builds are up on the front page.

Howard - LOVE the dot filtering! Thanks for the multiple pics and walkthrough on the process! I haven't tried dot filtering yet, but I'm looking forward to giving it a go on a few upcoming builds.

Also - I've decided to toss the Pup into this GB, as well. The particular Pup I'm doing has a pretty scuffed up cowl and lots of dust and mud along the fuselage. And it'll be a good opportunity to practice ruddratt's awesome wing weathering!

I'm planning to tackle the cowl weathering tonight or tomorrow...need to decide if I want to put a coat of gloss over the paint or not. I originally tried rubber cement chipping and wasn't happy at all. Sanding back to silver didn't work very well, either. This time around, I'm going to give rub-n-buff a shot. Tried a bit on the Fail Dauntless last night with promising results.

I'm still gaining experience with the dot filters and honestly, I probably didn't need to apply that many dots of paint. Just more to remove and run the risk of wearing through the finish. But it does a wonderful job of giving the finish a bit of age. I love it and want to try the effect with artist oils to see hoe differently it works.

No problem. I can get a little impatient sometimes.

Anyway, got the base coat done. So I should start the weathering tomorrow.

In the mean while here is a look at her so far. This was taken while I had her in my drying booth. Did I mention I have a patience problem? Time

I primed the inner fuselage and various bits of the cockpit with a mix of RLM 66 Dark Gray (70%) + Steel (30%)

This helps add dark shadows when the RLM02 is laid down. I did a pretty thorough job of the primer but I sprayed the RLM 02 deliberately patchy in parts to help simulate worn down areas.

I the picked out some details with a fine brush and applied some dry brushing with steel.

Next will be a messy oil wash with a lot of dark umber to help simulate some rust patches.

Cheers

Casper,

Interesting approach you devised there... I must remember your build and follow it closely as it looks really goodYesSmile

Just dropping by to say that i will restart work on the Arado floatplane soon again. I totally ruined my back lifting a washing machine moving my grandparents to a resthome and have been out of comission for almost two weeks now.... Getting where i was though... At least the xrays showed no spine damage.Cool

Hey Phil - have to say, I LOVE that Corsair. Unfortunately, since it's done, I can't take it, but anything up to the weathering stage is acceptable. I'd love to have that -1A you referenced. We've got some pics showing that shipboard birds weren't always as clean as supposed.

Got back to work on the Bf 109...

Cut through the fuselage for the radio equipment insert. Some of the toughest thickest fuselage plastic I have ever tried to cut through! Perhaps a little butchered but should come up al right. Notice the nice PE frame that sits at the back.

Cockpit has been finished and weathered. I think it's amazing just how much of a difference some slopped on umber oils add to the depth and detail.

I want to show a bird that has been used most of the war and has been hammered.

The engine PE extras from Eduard help with the engine block.

and finally the lovely resin radio equipment set from Aries has been sprayed RLM02 in preparation for detailing. I can't weather this bit too much as the panel would usually be closed but some light black to highlight the detail and also it's only going to be visible through a 10mm hole.

I also treated myself to an Aztek A4709 airbrush yesterday and have already noticed a difference in the quality of the paint surface.

Cheers

Love the cockpit Casper, looks well used and good attention to detail!

I have some paint on the Hellcat. Began with some preshade then several light coats of blue on top and white on the bottom. I'm no stickler for color accuracy so the top blue may not be correct for the scheme but I"m not all that worried about it. Its going to end up being the tri-color navy scheme so I just have to add the lighter blue along the sides and tail.

Thanks,

Jon

Last post for this weekend. Not a great photo but got the detailing done for the radio equipment. Yet to be weathered;

Also got the engine and gun assembly all painted, also yet to be weathered. I'm going to go to town on the weathering on this once it's all mounted into the fuselage.

Just a test fit before I sew the bird up. A couple of minor fit issues, the top and bottom IPs don't quite align but it shouldn't be noticeable.

Note the verlinden maps in the pouch on the starboard side of the office.

All stuck together, wings, rear wings and canopies masked and glued into place. I was hoping to use the reverse of the Eduard masks as new templates to cut interior masks for the canopies but the masks were SO bad I had abandon that idea. I have never seen Eduard masks cut so badly, only scored along the top and not all the way through the tape. I ended up making my own masks for the interior.

Not sure if I can say this on the internet but I'm building a bomb (Surprise) for the resin bomb trolley. The Eduard Bf-109 bomb set has some very nice PE details including PE stabilsers. BTW what colour should it be? Gray, RLM02 Gray or olive drab. I may have to do some trawling later for a colour scheme.

Cheers

Oddman- I'll be watching your weathering on that 'Cat closely for ideas when I get to that phase on the one I'll be getting back to when done with my Lightning. Looks very niceYes.

Casper- Awesome work on the 109 interiorToast. Many years ago when I was in high school in Ft. Worth,Texas, I had the opportunity to sit in one of the Hispano built "109"s that were used in the film Battle of Britain.  I recall it to be a very snug little cockpit to fight a war from. Especially with the lid closed. No place for a claustrophobic.

Dragonwagon- Neat little StuartCool. I'm normally a wings and wheels modeler, but this GB has got me tempted to give a go at some armor and naval stuff.

Got some update pics of the Lightning.

First up, some paint chipping with a silver Prismacolor  pencil. I'll add a little more chipping later with a fine brush and aluminum paint to get some variation in the intensity of the "exposed" metal.

Base coated the turbos with Model Master chrome silver and allowed to dry overnight in prep for the discoloring and weather washes to come.

Materials used in my exhaust weathering process. The paints are just what I've on hand , but about any water based acrylic would probably work. My measuring is pretty much a" looks about right" method , so anyone trying this, experiment  to find what works for your application.

I start with a few drops of Future thinned with a few drops of water (approx. 50/50). To this ,I add a drop or two of Thalo blue.

You can see how the color builds up with each coat . Yet still very transparent, allowing the base "metal" to shine through. This would be very effective in discoloring chrome exhaust pipes, etc., and could be taken to various levels of color depending on how heat discolored and/or rusted you want.

Could also be applied with an airbrush for a soft edge as on the polished aluminum panels under an exhaust stack. A polished P-51 for example.

After a little dry time for the blue, a drop or two of red to the mix. Again experiment and adjust to the intensity of the purple your after. As more paint is added to the wash mix ,you may need to add a drop or two of water to keep it thin enough to work as a wash.

Then a coat or two of the purple.Allow to dry.

You can see how the each color builds up while still allowing the previous color and base show through.

Now , I'll add a few drops of yellow to the mix to give me the brown tones. Usually takes a little more yellow than the other colors to bring in a more straw colored brown. Again , allow to dry.

I wanted to start the "rusting", so I added some ModelMakerz burnt sienna pigment to the wash and gave one or two final wash coats.

Finished off with a light dusting of dry, rubble dust and burnt sienna  pigments,

and a very light dry brushing of ModelMaster steel to pic up some highlights.

I'll sometimes use MM jet exhaust for this step , depending on the look I'm after.

Went with the kit wheels and vinyl tires . Sealed off the wheels with paint and Future before installing the tires to protect against the vinyl eating the plastic , then sprayed with dullcoat.

Felt the tires were too black, so I went  over them with a wash made from pastels to give them a more rubbery look . Also gave the wheels a bit of wash to start their dirtying process. Then a final sealing with dullcoat.

Here's a look at one of the installed turbos.

The pic really doesn't do it justice. You can see a deep metal shine and even some of the blue and purple tones through the browns and rust. All they need now are exhaust stains.

For the formation lights under the fuselage , I lightly carved out a depression with a round Dremel cutter chucked in a pin vise. Then base coated with some chrome silver. Also the other nav. lights on the wing tips and tail were given a coat of chrome.

Then added drops of appropriately colored acrylic to Future and built up the color on each light. Took more than one coat but the lights have a subtle reflective look to them and some depth.

Down to the final assembly items and fiddly bits. Not long till this one is complete.

So painting time;

There's quite a huge contrast between the RLM70 and RLM 71 so I'm hoping this will be toned down during the weathering process. I'll seal this with a gloss coat in readiness for decalling.
