Ok, here is my entry for this GB. Sprues and resin watched and drying at the moment. I am using the Aires engine upgrade kit for his model. It contains 2x Daimler Benz engines plus wheelbay replacements.
The amount of resin in this upgrade has to be seen to be believed. About 60 casting blocks plus PE parts and wire. Also some frightening surgery has be done on the fuselage and wing wheelbays on the kit.
I think I have my work cut out for me on this build (no pun intended )
Cheers
On the bench: A-4F 1/32 Hasegawa
Just deployed: F6F-5N Hellcat Nightfighter 1/48 Eduard
Up next: A6-E Intruder 1/48 Revell
That looks like it will be an awesome update set! Can't wait to see it all painted and installed!
Very nice.
Ive made a smidge of progress.
Now i gotta paint it wood grain...yay

Check out my blog here.
Resin parts washed and dried. Boy, there sure are a few of them!
Soooooooooo looking forward to this build Casper! That is a crazy amount of upgrades but it will be well worth the effort I'm sure.

Check out mah woodgrain ***'s. oh yeah im good. lol.
How itle be seen.
With both doors open.
By itself.
Really easy actually. I laid a yellow base coat down, got some dark brown, dotted it, smeared it with a clean brush, then another really like layer of yellow mixed with a touch of brown over top to dull it down.
C&C?
Looks pretty good to me Mikey! Thought you used some balsa there for a second....

So after many hours of cutting resin and handling microscopic pieces of PE, I now have 2x Daimler Benz engines.
Next prime, then paint.
Mike nice wood !
Casper man that is lookin' some kinda sweet !!
Mikey - That wood grain is awesome!
Casper - Nice work on those engines! Can't wait to see them painted!
Got some major surgery done on the Dornier today in preparation for the Aires resin parts. I'm only half way through but wanted to show a comparison with the original kit parts.
New wheelbay in butterscotch resin.
Fuselage had significant surgery. The front engine housing is gone as well as the rear panel for the rear engine. Also note the cut out inside the wing attachment. That was hard work.
Ok, halfway there. Time for some lunch then the other half!
Some more progress on the Dornier.
The front wheelbay;
The forward engine, some various parts;
and a couple of views of the office;
Nice looking dornier.
Heres some progress.
Casper you're doing freakin' awesome with that surgery ,thats not for the faint of heart! Office is looking great as well as the engine and forward fire wall
Mike she's really starting to take shape,did'nt realize how big that thing really is until now!
I KNOW RIGHT. Its bigger than my B-26, by quite a bit. When its done itle have the biggest wingspan of any aircraft ive built. Or any aircraft in my stash, including the 32nd scale F-5 ive got there. I think its slightly smaller than my 32nd mustang though, but i doubt ill ever finish that.
Man that is big,the biggest one I've done has to be the 1/48 He 177 ,that thing about put me in the poor house just in glue and paint! Why do you say you wo'nt finish the Mustang?
Its the dragon 1:32 early mustang.
Its not the easiest kit, and i lack motivation with it. I look at the box and cringe.
Ooooooooooooh nuff said! Really is a mind boggle that they get some so right and others soooooooo wrong!
Got some more engine work done on the Dornier. It's really necessary to get most of this done prior to fuselage assembly. Also a lot of testing and dry fitting to be done to make this work. Going well so far...
Front engine assembly 99% complete, just a couple of wires and pipes to add as well as a bit more oil wash;
This will be attached last of all, even after the decalling and greeblie attachings.
The rear engine housing. Piror to weathering. I'll do this once the engine and full piping is fitted out;
Some various parts for the rear engine;
Got the fuselage sewn up with the rear engine assembly. It fit together much better than I anticipated, knowing sometimes the havoc a single resin cockpit tub can cause. A couple of unexpected gaps to fill but no biggy.
Very snug fit, the interior cross walls fit almost perfectly and in the right spot;
This is just a test fit of the front engine assembly but it turned out to be sturdier than I anticipated. This is going to be an awesome looking bird.
Casper that is some great craftmanship,it is looking awesome!!!
I got the bird together but some fairly nasty gaps due to the extra amount of resin parts. Some gap filing will take care of this problem.
My masks seem to be held up in the Xmas post so I am pretty much as fair as I can go when the putty dries and is sanded.
Ugh, good news and bad news.
Bad news, i had a jar of turps spill over my desk the other day (damn you earthquakes) it melted the horizontail tail planes to the desk. Fogged up some clear bits. Melted parts of the engine etc.
Good news. i have a spare kit lol.
Thankfully no damage to the stuff ive already put together.
I have been guilty of lurking here and admiring the cool builds goin on, I am always amazed by the talent in these groups.
Casper you seem to have that "Detailmadness Syndrome" going in a big way along with a number of others Love what you are doing with your build man
B17Pilot its time to announce my build, it will be a cross over from NMFIII a 1/48 Revell B-29 covered with foil. Haven't decided on markings yet, but I will be starting the build on 1/1/2012, may even get it finished by the end date. I have to figure a way to pose it flaps down and spinning props ( the prop blur thing) as it will have to be hung from the ceiling in an approach configuration.
Randy So many to build.......So little time
Casper - Man that bird is looking awesome! Makes me want to pull mine out, but then I would have to pick up that Aires set.
Scorpiomikey - Man sorry to hear that about your build. Good to now the already built stuff was saved. Nice to have a spare kit as well. What about a junk yard dio with the damaged stuff?
Vetteman42 - Awesome, the front page is updated. You will most likely have to scratch those flaps, but can't wait to see it. Speaking of NMFIII, I'm still waiting on the weather to get my P-47 painted.
B17Pilot Casper - Man that bird is looking awesome!

Makes me want to go purchase one of those push/pull German fighters. Once built the Monogram kit way back in the 70s and came away with an affection for that big fighter. It just looks sinister and fast.
Now that the holiday madness is over , I've been able to get back to the bench and start making progress on the C-47. Got the flight deck done.
Many kit manufacturers don't seem to put enough levers for the engine controls on these old recip birds, so I accurized the throttle quadrant , also added lap belts of paper strips to the seats. The Trumpeter kit only has PE shoulder harnesses for the pilot / copilot seats.
Working on accurizing the cargo area bulkhead and the radio/navigators stations to a WWII era Goonie.
I also plan on making some diamond quilt pattern insulation in aluminum foil for the forward section. That may not be totally accurate for the era, but I like how it looks . Will paint the insulation a blend of Model Master OD and field drab.

That Dornier is shaping up nicely Casper. I've got a 1/72 Dragon kit in the stash, you're making me want to pull it out!
On the bench: Airfix 1/72 Wildcat; Airfix 1/72 Vampire T11; Airfix 1/72 Fouga Magister
Slow progress on the Dornier. The Eduard masks arrived in the post last Friday and I painted the wheels. Got the wheel assemblies complete and all I can say is this is a huge plane! It stands a monster I guess having to raise forward and aft props off the ground it needed to be.
Here is a comparison shot of the Dornier wheels alongside the Fishbed I'm currently working on. Same scale, massive difference!
Great work, Casper! Yes the Dornier is a tall bird. Saw the one at the National Air and Space museum at Dulles International in Washington, DC, man I couldn't believe how tall she is! If you ever visit the area, be sure to stop at that place, it was AWESOME! IIRC its the only one left in the world.

Howard, I'm going to have to steal borrow this idea for the Monogram one I have in the stash. Excellent work!
