Guh. Can't upload to Photobucket right now, but the PV-1 is very close to the finish. Here's a pic I posted up to Facebook for the time being:

All that's left -

  • Paint wingtip lights
  • Install gear bay doors
  • Install aerial mast and pitot tube
  • Rig the aerial wires

Definitely anticipating wrapping it up tonight! Then it's on to the monster.

Sounds cool Doogs have a great time, take lots of pix.

Due to my B-36 blow-up, I'm not going to make the cut off for this GB. Embarrassed

On to the 109 GB!

Oh I am so envious you are going up in a DC-3 Doogs. My Mother flew on both the DC-3 and Super Connie. I called her so she could also watch the Connie flying over. Oh and just to let you know my CFI told me the DC-3 was one of his favorites to fly.

I have watched this Connie as it has been worked on at the airport and was such a suprise to see it in the air. The CAF has a wing at Camarillo airport along with the EAA so thats is always lots going on there.

Super cool, v-man!

Speaking of multi-props, there was a Groupon yesterday for a flight in a C-47 out at Fredericksburg over Memorial Day weekend. So I bought two tickets - one for me and one for my dad (they'll be in for the daughter's turning two). Can't wait! IMO the DC-3/C-47 is probably the single most significant aircraft ever made.

And yes, I'll snap plenty of pics and almost certainly grab the venerable old Monogram kit off eBay now...

Thought I would share this video with you all, saw this plane flying over my house back in January and now I know for sure it was a Super Connie. Seems my eyes weren't playing tricks on me. I think it also made a few fly bys over Van Nuys Airport too.

Howard, so sorry about your father.  Your C-47 is looking very nice, loving the work you did on the engines!

Doogs, I'm digging the subtlety of the salt weathering.   Nice save on the finish, I'm always scared to try techniques like that on a model I've spent so much time on, but I guess that's the best way to learn.

I received the Eduard set for the Lanc in the mail the other day, its pretty intimidating, but it should be fun:

It is making a big difference though, as the Hasegawa interior is very sparsely detailed, and quite a bit will be visible through the large amount of glass on the canopy and nose.

Floor before:

 And after:

Definitely need one of these:

I'll post more photos this week as I progress on the interior.  On most Lancasters, it appears that the fuselage windows are faired/painted over, so I'm spending a lot of time filling and sanding those.  Plus there are tons of knock-out marks to clean up in the interior (kind of surprising for a 'modern' kit.)

Awesome work (as usual) Doggs...great save. Still don't quite get the salt weathering technique yet. I have read all the tutorials on it...guess I am just slow.

It's a bit hard to see the results from far out...here's a close shot of the wing:

Oh without a doubt the technique produces beautiful results...just like you achived. I just can't wrap my head around the HOW TO of it.

Daddy1.  It's under the name "Pledge with Future Shine."  Stupid I know, but the minds of marketing people are strange indeed...  Future was soo much better...

Okay, I have the Mossie almost ready for paint.  I bought a parts kit on eBay for like $3 and it turned out to be a complete kit, so I turned the one that was almost done into a Mk VI Fighter/Bomber, and the one I just got is going to be the Mk. IV Bomber.  I'll try and send up dome pics tomorrow.

Doogs- Beautiful work and great save. Although , the "messy" salt finish would work great on a plane or car that's sat abandoned out in the weather for a number of years.

BTW- What is the trade name Future is sold under now? My local Home Depot doesn't carry it anymore , at least I don't think so. It's gone through a couple label changes in recent years and I might not be looking for the right packaging. I'm running low on my bottle and need to find a source again. It's great stuff and I've even used it to bring back the the "clear" of the headlights on my car much like we'd bring back a fogged canopy on a model. Worked great and so far ,seems pretty durable, even under outdoor automotive conditions.

Got a few pics of the Goony. First up , I couldn't resist a test fit with the wings, fuse., etc. The C-47 is a rather large bird. About the size of a heavy bomber of the day.  Testimony to the power of those P/W twin Wasps.

A few of the gear wells. I'm busying them up a little on the back wall of the wells and will overlay some of the molded on hydraulic lines and such with fine wire as well as add a couple of lines not there.

I want to thank you all for the condolences about my dad, and yes waynec, I'm extremely thankful to have had him around all those years. He will always be my greatest inspiration and influence.

Back to the bench. Howard

Definately makes the difference! You don`t get the instant results that you get with the salt chipping but the payoff is at the end with the salt fading. I`m thinking about doing both techniques on the Buffalo I`m doing for the 1942,70th anniversary GB. Just to be clear...each layer gets a gloss seal?

There are a couple of different salt weathering techniques. I just used the "salt chipping" on a Wildcat I`m building and there`s the "salt fading" technique Doog`s is using. And they say salt is bad for you...Wink

Nice save, Doogs!  Future to the rescue!

I should have more time to work on my own Ventura now, since I finished up my P-47.  Guess I can't wait any longer for that Eduard canopy mask Crying Time to face the facts and do it manually.

A series of PV-1 updates...

First, the salt weathering went really well, until I went to rinse the salt away...

Fortunately, Future fixed it.

Still way too pretty, though. So now I'm doing some fading first, and will bring the salt back into play a bit later on.

This is fading with some Sand + Light Sea Gray, and some heavily thinned Raw Umber amid the panel lines. I'll be coming back with some white or heavily-lightened gray tonight to beat it up even more, THEN bringing salt back into the picture.

first for those who lost their dad condolences but also be gratiful to have had him for so long. my dad died in 1968 when i was 17 and i am sure that loss influenced many of my early adult decisions. the me-264 is a 1/72 special hobby kit. seems to have mixed reviews but generally given a plus due to the subject matter. will be my second plane model.
