Howard - my condolences on your loss...that's got to be a tough one to bear, especially on top of everything else life seems to be throwing at you at the moment. Glad you can find solace in bench time!

My son and I actually got "buzzed" by FiFi last year. Didn't know she was in Austin until she flew over the house at a pretty low altitude. Definitely awesome to behold!

Been out of the loop these past few days, taking the kids to Sea World and such, but when we got home this afternoon I managed to get away for a few minutes to get the PV-1 salted up and prepped for weathering.

More to come...

Howard, sorry to hear about you're dad.  We're losing members of the Greatest Generation everyday.  Sounds like your dad was there to see many firsts.  On the lighter note, glad to see Fifi flying again!  Last I heard she was still under going engine refurbishments/FAA inspections.   Lastly those engines look great!

Thanks fellas. I do miss him , this world isn't the same without him, but he isn't gone. I see him in my daughter , myself.  My dad was born and raised around New Orleans,LA , grew up with and loved the jazz from that region . So the music was When the Saints Go Marching In, New Orleans jazz style. The pastor said " Today , a saint went marching in". Interestingly , when we went outside for the graveside ceremony, the sky was a rich, bright blue with many sweeping high cirrus clouds. As if the angles were leaving contrails escorting him to the heavens. All of our loved ones gone before are never really gone , we are their legacy, it's up to us to make the best of it.

I wish I had gotten some up close walk-around pics of Fifi, but the ride alongs were all sold out through the entire week she was there. Kept her pretty busy. Was cool seeing her in flight so often though. Had been a long time since I'd last seen her at Harlingen,TX  back in 1976 when it was still the Confederate Air Force. I had tons of fun at this years fly-in with my new zoom telephoto lens. Now I can bring in close those in flight shots without loosing all the resolution.

Howard.

I am sorry to hear about your Dad.  We seem to be losing too many good people these days.  Just about everyone I know has lost someone important in their lives in the last year.  Your Dad sounds like he was a great guy.

I'm not sure what area you live in, but if would like to, please join us for our new annual trip to the Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton OH.  We haven't set the exact date yet, but it will probably be in June.

You know, we decided to do the trip as a sort of annual remembrance of our late friend Bernie, he was a retired Mst. Sgt. in the USAF as well.  But served mostly in the Vietnam War.  Maybe we should expand the purpose of the visit, to include all of the veteran heroes who kept this country free, including people like your Dad.  If you don't follow it, you might want to check out the official Bernie Memorial build which is currently under way.

Again, you have the condolences of our family.  And always keep his memory with you.

Rich

BTW -One of the things getting in the way of bench time. My dad passed away a week ago. He was 91 , WWII and Korean war vet , 35 years service with the Army Air Corps, USAAF, charter member of SAC, charter member of the USAF. He's also the one who taught me about craftsmanship and the difference between just being a father and being a dad.  Buried with full military honors. It was beautiful, quite moving. Ret. SMSGT Samuel Markel flying with the angels. Love ya ,dad.

Howard,

Sorry to hear about your Dad. Another member  of the "Greatest Generation" has passed on and that saddens me.

Excellent shots of FIFI! I`d love to see her up close and personal but don`t think she`ll be coming to New Jersey anytime soon..lol.

The Gooney Bird looks great...engines are very detailed ! Looking forward to more of your WIP shots. Keep up the good work!

Almost forgot, one event that has kept me away from bench time is going through and editing about 1600 pics I took over two days at the Sun-N-Fun fly in here in Florida. I've got day 1 loaded up to my Shutterfly sharesite. Now to go through the other 7hundred something pics of day 2.

Here are some pics I think fit right in with Too Many Props.  CAF's B-29 Fifi.

My apolgies for not keeping up with my posts lately. I've had a lot (tons) of happenings going on in my little corner of the world lately. I have been lurking though and like what I see.

Trey , that is an awesome job you've done on that wing. I built that kit a number of years ago, had it hanging on the wall to show it's profile when it was bumped and fell. Been sitting in the "to be repaired" hanger since with a couple flaps , landing gear, and a few prop blades needing reattachment. You've got me thinking of dragging it out and returning it to flight status.

 Theuns - Great workYes.

Doogs- Watching your build tempts me more and more to rush out and add it to my stash. Looks great.

In spite of some home remodeling work , getting laid off, job hunting , getting called back to the job, major drain leak in the kitchen wall, etc; I have been able to get the engines on my Goonie done. Here's pics.

And...I'm planning to weather the snot out of this thing! Fading, salt-weathering, some chipping and touch ups, dust and grit from the crushed coral runways...

Awesome! Can't wait!  Decals and the calimari look good.

Okay...VPB-150 was the Devilfish Pviators. "Sea Deuce 2" was transferred to VPB-133.

Speaking of which...decals on!

Doogs, the PV-1 is looking pretty sweet!  That little antenna on top is something I'd break off about 8 times during a build.  Smile

My Lancaster is progressing slowly, I decided the kit interior was just way too sparse, especially with how much will be visible with the amount of canopy glass you can see through, so I ordered the Eduard interior set.

Looking great Doogs, and thanks for the info. I am looking forward to seeing the weathering on this.

I suppose when you consider art work on other US aircraft, the Dragon and its Tail spring to mind, this is a bit restrained.

 DoogsATX:

If by home duties you mean basing out of Tinian and Iwo Jima, then yes. VPB-150 was very active in anti-shipping, anti-sub and coastal strike operations.

No, I was thinking state-side. But I suppose if the targets were sea-based, and they held air superiority over Iwo and Tinian, then a giant green octopus on top wouldn't have much impact...

Well that and they weren't basing out of forward areas. I mean, when you're sharing an airstrip with B-24s and then B-29s all gleaming-like in bare metal, who cares about your green cephalopod?

That is a CRAZY splotch of green! Was that machine on "home duties"? I can't imagine it being let loose in a combat zone...

The white area's part of the tricolor scheme, at least according to the Zotz profiles.

Thanks, and ye, it is awsome.

I had no idea what Price Pfister was, so i just did a google search. It gave me a company that sells faucet's (taps in English). Would this be what you are reffering to.

That's the one. Just the penchant for putting P in front of things...

Theuns - that battle damage looks fantastic!

Bish

Doogs, that look great. Was this Octopus scheme a one of or was it common amongst these aircraft.

It was a marking device used by one squadron. Need to recheck my refs, but it was either VPB-133 or 150.  Their nickname was the "Devilfish Pviators". It's my theory that one of them went on to found Price Pfister. Anyway, "Sea Deuce 2" got left behind when they redeployed at some point, and reassigned to the other squadron, but it kept the octopus because, well, it's totally awesome.
