I wasn't in the mood for anything too intensive last night, but I had to do something... did a few minutes of parts clean-up. Did a little cockpit assembly and joined the upper & lower wing halves on the SHAR... which revealed issue #1. The undersides are a little longer than the depression they are meant to fit into, required a little trimming to allow them to fit into the fuselage halves. Not a big deal, but I was hoping to not have any surprises on the first pieces I put together!

Not really what you want right at the start of the build. Hopefully that will be the worst of any issues. It is the Sea harrier you have started on, correct?

Yup, Sea Harrier is first up for this GB. I figure it is something I can pick away at with my "summer modelling hours" in effect. Between yardwork, softball, a little vacation time - the bench time gets cut into pretty deeply. I'm thinking I'll need to be a little more focused before I start in on the Pucara. Looking forward to that though now that I've seen bondoman's pics. I need to check out the painting options & make sure I do one of the ones he didn't. I think I remember seeing one with some NMF showing through the camo. Hmm

Those Pucaras do look very nice, tempted to get one my self even though its way out of what i normally build. Hopefully the Harrier won't give you to many dramas.

The basic scheme before the war was overall anodized matte aluminum. I don't think any were sent over that way. Most were light green and tan, a batch got over painted darker green and red brown. There were also a couple of strange ones, sort of a zebra of dark green and tan or green and orange over anodized. Most had light blue bottoms. See if you can find May 2007 Model Aircraft Monthly. I haven't got it, but it sounds pretty thorough.

I have pdfs of Model Aircraft Monthly from June of 2007 featuring several Pucara builds, some good info there. (May have come from you iirc??) I think maybe the NMF portions I'm remembering are the unpainted control surfaces.

That's a nice video. One of the character marks were those lights on the leading edge of the pylons, which were remarked on by the troops they attacked. I tried a little piece of mirror foil but it didn't do it justice. One of the little details left to do.

Nope, it's the new-tool kit. Panel lines are traditional Airfix - so heavy I probably won't need to run a wash in there at all, the shadow should take care of it for me! But everything generally looks good, the decals look fine and the price was right.

bondoman - yep, those lights are OBVIOUS i that video... foil + a drop of superglue? What are the odds of visiting the local giant craft shop and finding some clear sparkly fake jewel to stick in there??

Bish - yes, that is probably the quickest way of trimming the grass  I have ever seen. I don't think my neighbours would approve though! Big Smile

Went to the IWM at Duxford today and they had a few aircraft that might be of interest to the GB. In the main hanger was a Vulcan and a harrier, i think the same one that someone showed a photo of earlier hanging from the ceiling. But in the conservation hanger was a Pucara. It was brought to the Uk after the war. It clearly needs a bit of conservation, hence being in the hanger. But short of a paint job and a couple of missing panels, the outside don't look that bad. Thought i would share some pics of it with you guys, seeing how many of you are building one. So hope you enjoy.

Actually these are all the photos i took of it.

Thank you for the pictures- duly filed. The 515 is at RAF Cosford, or at least was in 2007.

Thanks again. I think this is a very interesting aircraft.

Thanks for the Pucara pics Bish. I'm surprised at how pale the sand + green is now, but I suppose it has faded a great deal in the years since it was applied.

Ye, i get the impression it hasn't been painted since 82. And who know how many of those years were spent out side in lovely English weather. I am assuming, as it is in the conservation hanger, that it is going to be fixed up. But as it is in the back of the hanger, i don't think they are in any rush. Same seems to go for an He 111 thats in there. The main effort seems to be on British and US aircraft.

Hey gang, I've been picking away at some small details over the last week, 15-20 minutes at a time makes for some slow progress!

  • The cockpit is assembled & painted, oob including the decals. I need to do a little drybrushing & wash.
  • The nozzles are put together but I need to do something about the joins that run right down the middle of the "fins", without making it worse! I'm thinking I could jig them up so the fins are laying flat, then add a little Future...
  • I had mentioned before a little surgery was needed on the wing joins
  • undercarriage bays are in place, I should be able to mate the two fuselage halves soon, once the cockpit is finished.

I'll post some pics when enough has happened to show you!

Back on harrier finally, working on the cockpit and ip between 1:20 - 3:00 am Dead

I'm not sure did the right choice to glue the cockpit panels before to finish it but i did so:

reinforcement was needed, on the left consolle i glued the base for throttles

the most complicated thing was to drill all instruments holes without break the tiny ip sheet, successfully put on only a frame for one of left instrument

after take the picture above i clean the holes, man the ip are really little Tongue Tied

Now the more hard thing to do is to fix all in right mode ;need to scratch the rear bulkheads of the cockpit.

After this section and the nozzles mods the gr3 will be simply to finish Toast

Bsyamato - that tiny little instrument panel... how do you do it!??! I love the scratch-work you add to these 1/72 kits, it really is amazing to me! Yes I took some photos of my progress last night while waiting out Hurricane Irene ("tropical depression" by the time it got to my place!).

pics etc up now! The cockpit, oob, including the decals for instrument panel & side consoles. The pics make my highlight on the buckles look REALLy bright, not like that in person. And not much of this will be visible once she's all sealed up anyway.

Underside looked fine except for a couple of sinkholes (the glob of putty near the nose gear!), and a gap at the wingroot, apparently I trimmed too much when making that fit. A little CA & nobody will ever see it anyway I suppose.

Topside - the wing-to-fuselage joint has one "up-step" and one "down-step", making me think some pilot error is at work here.Embarrassed

Nose-cone? Does anyone here know for sure... is the nose-cone supposed to have the same profile all-around? Mine looks like it is flatter on one side than the other...

The exhaust nozzles - nicely moulded, but the 2 halves join right in the middle of the fins. I ended up running a little CA over top of the fins, then a rather thick coat of black paint. Not perfect, but it'll do. (Aden guns installed here already, I drilled out the muzzles. Some things I'm going out of order on...)

My little Japanese friend was doing pics with some IJN and IJA aircraft, he stuck around to pose with the Sea Harrier...

bsyamaton, nice work there. Like vance, i am often surprised at one can be done in this scale, and i have been building in 72nd for years.

vance, looking good on the Harrier. Not sure about the nose cone, afraid i can't see it in the pic.

Well in that pic, the right side looks flatter than the left... but it could just be the shadow playing tricks on me. The kit part has no locating tab or notch, so I.m assuming it should be the same profile all 'round.
