OK, proof I did do something productive this past weekend!
This is where I had left off, splotches applied with q-tip & thinned paint. (Yes, I got too lazy to airbrush through a cardboard mask....)
I got looking at my grandfathers's pic & the one he's sitting on top of has more of an overall mottle than splotches, so I added some more paint, then sealed it all up with Future.
I've had pretty good luck with the oob decals on these kits that I picked up 2nd hand. Not so with this bird, wasn't even thinking about trying to salvage these ones...
Now, before anybody whips out a Luftwaffe order of battle archive document, I'll confess: The markings are based on "what most seemed to carry" + "what Vance had in his spares". I just want this to look the part, although I did try to get fuselage codes that were similar to the box-supplied. It's a mix of Tamya, Academy, Revell and Aeromaster decals.
And since gramps was in Holland when the picture was taken, I scavenged a pair of little Dutch shoes from an Aeromaster sheet for Me410s that had been based there...
On the bench: Airfix 1/72 Wildcat; Airfix 1/72 Vampire T11; Airfix 1/72 Fouga Magister
Double wow for the splotches Vance
rtoo speed makes ugly results, too relax don't make results
bsyamato Double wow for the splotches Vance
Thanks - I think the problem in the first picture was "not enough splotches", so I fixed it!
Looks great Vance...and the color seems to be different with the decals on.

Thanks!
That different look may have more to do with the Future coat. The topside colours are Tamiya acrylics w/ matt finish. I find the Future always darkens those colours noticeably.
Outstanding results with the splotches. They are not easy to do. The whole plane is coming together very nicely.
That's looking good Vance. Funny think is, I can't recall ever seeing a built one of these before, so good choice.
Cheers
Tony
I'm just taking it one GB at a time.
Thanks gang!checkmateking02 - my method, in 1/72 scale anyway, is thinned paint applied with a Q-tip. A lot of the "straight from the airbrush methods" look good, but they often look, well, maybe too good to me at the small scale.taxtp - Yeah, you really have to go looking. I've seen the Revell of Germany kit built up pretty frequently in 1/72, but not often the Airfix. To be honest, several of my online searches spotted this kit…. on various old kit auction sites etc, it appears to be a bit of an underground collectors item. Maybe I shouldn't have built it?!?!?! Ahh well, that wouldn't have been as much fun!
If it was in collectible condition there might be some argument not to build it, but I'm a builder, not a collector, apart from the massive stash of kits that are just waiting to be built, of course.

Yeah, if I'd seen it listed as "$229 in the box" or something stupid I may have sold it, but the plan when I bought it was to build it.

Vance, how do you prevent the q-tip from shedding fibers and sticking in the paint?
I just find the tightest (spun?), most fiber-free one I can find, dab it in the paint, then on a piece of paper towel a few times. The paint seems to matt the fibers down pretty well actually.
I will have to try that. Even when I use q-tips for decaling, they seem to shed. Thanks, Vance.
Maybe Canadian Q-tips are higher quality, ehh...

Maybe! I just checked; made in USA--and the original, genuine "Q-Tips" brand.
hmmm - could be onto something, will have to check out my supplier!
Vance:
Very nice finish on that camo!
Just to let you know, I still have those 1970s Disco era AIRFIX He-177 customizing decals in case you feel the aircraft isn't colorful enough.

lol, I'd have to delete the gun turrets & install 1/72 disco balls to go with those decals! I think some colour on the spinners will be enough, thanks! (Post up a picture of those if you still have it though, I think it would shock dismay puzzle surprise people!)

Sure thing !
I've just finished a US navy Hoovercraft from Trumpeteer (I can recooment this one) and next to my list is a Airfix 1:72 PBY 5A Catalina in Dutch pre 1942 markings. Still time to do this one, so may I join this built? Later this year a 1:24 spitfire in planned, but I'm afraid this build is over than!

On the bench: 1:350 Yamato + I-400, 1:48 F15 strike eagle...
aha Goose, I just needed to see those again. They would have looked better on a VW Minibus than a Heinkel - I wonder if there are pics anywhere of someone having actually used those on something?
Paul!! All are welcome as long as it is an Airfix kit, welcome aboard. Looking forward to your Dutch Cat!
Those stylized birds--they are "disco duck?"
checkmateking02 Those stylized birds--they are "disco duck?"
lol, yes, they were very likely Disco Ducks!
I suspected as much!

LOL........
AIRFIX and MPC issued a lot of Disco Duck decals with their 1/72 aircraft during the 1970s.
I'm afraid there's something gone wrong, the kit was so incredably ... BAD, I decided to give it to the community... In a grey plastic bag, picket up once a week...
Sorry guys, old Airfix kits are for me the same as old Revell kits, they have too much rubbish... If it does not fit good, I can live with that. When the copmplete frame is bend soI can not fit the stuff unless I have to break it, I just throw it away...There is still a brandnew 1:24 Sptifire MK1A on the bench...
Oh yeah, the Dutch cat will be there, I'm afraid it will not be an Airfix kit...

Decalling was free & loose in the '70s baby!!!
Think I'm setting up for some fiddly-work this weekend. Need to mask the "fishbowl glazing" on the Heinkel, then start adding guns/turrets/undercarriage. (And hopefully get the cockpit closed up inside the fuselage of the Flanker I'm working on...)
So ill put you down for a 1:24 MK1A Spit? The 1a was the first of the 3 bladers wasn't it?
