99% done, need to use a little more dullcoat to finish it off. My "almost-done" photos are here: /forums/t/127395.aspx?PageIndex=13

I had fun with that one, a very nice kit - so tiny though!!!

Nice.

I was looking at the LHS site the other day. Came across something odd.

Airfix 1:72 TSR-2 $120

Airfix 1:48 TSR-2 $111

WTF? When did 72nd airfix start costing more than 48?

I could really go for a nice easy OOB build right about now. Thinking about buying another Tamiya Mustang III

Thanks checkmateking02, the helicopter was a first for me (I think I even managed to get the rotors aligned properly!), and I had some fun masking the camo on this Mirage too. Enjoyable builds, now that I have the decals straightened out.

Now I need to decide what to do about the missing stripe decal on the rudder. Guess I'll be mixing some paint for that!.

Wait, I think we do know someone with a new-tool Swordfish that could be built in here. Just to show people how absolutely spectacular this little kit is. (Apparently it can even be had for less than $20) If I could only remember who was telling me they had bought one... Hmm

one of bad things are the one piece canopy and the decals for the main ip, out of these is a really high detailed kit

The canopy & IP decals are a minus - but what do these little kits cost compared to Tamiya / Hasegawa etc?? I think Airfix is on a good roll with all of these new-tool kits. Yes

I've built their new Sea Harrier, great kit, decals were fine as well. The only thing I would complain about with the SHAR is the depth of the panel lines. I've been told that their thinking is that a beginner hand-painting these kits won't lose the lines. I airbrushed overall colours & some shading, but didn't do my usual panel line wash - the lines are deep/wide enough that you see a slight shadow. Very good kits for the $. I also have a new-tool Bf109G in 1/72, also looks good but haven't started building yet.

LOL minus Vance but for me fundamentals Cool canopy was already cut in 3 pieces by my x-acto blades. The airfix zero think beat the hasegawa for the price (you can get 3 airfix for an hasegawa? Whistling ) but i suspect the best is the academy kit for 1/72 (and i miss he Boo Hoo )

The actual airfix engraved lines are really good also for panele washing! and till now easy to build ad good fitting pieces. Plus the decals are "CARTOGRAPH"!!!!!

Vance copared to your Sea Harrier pictures the zero seems have finest engraved details .

Airfix chosen a great way for its rebirth !!! Toast

Vance is this the box of the sea harrier you built?

I recently built the Academy Zero - agreed, a very nice little kit with lots of good detail.

The first link you posted, yes, that's the boxing of the Sea Harrier I built. (2 more good decal options in there besides the Falklands all-gray...)

About 70% of my ww2 fighter are academy Embarrassed corsair, tempest, typhoon, bf-109, and the good old hellcat. Also built but destroyed a wildcat and a p-51. On the box the p-47 and the fw-190 and the avenger (also waithing for the helldiver). Between these only the fw-190 the wildcat and the avenger was poor of details , the others i think are the better compromise for the 72 scale or just the best Stick out tongue full cockpit details and detailed raised ip's!

On the airfix i have the chance to get the harrier gr5 version for 5€ someone knows if the detail level is good?

Delurking from the ether of email land.  Realized around New Years I should probably finish some models before starting some more.  I checked and my poor Spit has sat forlornly on the side of my worktable since September.  I've been working on her off and on over the past few weeks and she is just about done.  She's decalled and sitting on her wheels, just got to add the exhausts, antenna, tailwheel and pitot.  Got the Mk. IXc on deck.  May have to build the Bf-110 at some point as my poor ICM 109E-3 is feeling somewhat outnumbered

.

There is no backstory for this build.  It is a recent celebration of the first Airfix kit ever produced, right down to the blue plastic and fictitious markings.

I finished up my Airfix Gloster Gladiator  yesterday, and took photos of the finished product this afternoon.  But first, I thought I’d post pictures of a good idea gone bad.  After I assembled the bottom wing and all its struts, I considered it would be easiest to rig the thing before I put the top wing on.

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

This I did.

When I attached the top wing, all the rigging sagged, so I attempted to tighten it up using heat.  This was singularly unsuccessful.  Although I tried incense sticks, matches applied after the flame was blown out, even lighted cigarettes—the rigging simply either popped off or melted in half.  So I removed it all and started over again, with the top wing in place.  The photos don’t show the disaster, just the rigging in place.

I’ll start a new post with photos of the finished product.

Here is the finished product, but first some back-story.

I found a book at Amazon called Battle of Britain Aircraft.  It consists of articles written by Ray Rimmell and published in Scale Modeler magazine back in 1982.  It was re-issued in 1990, so it’s a bit dated.  However, it contained some information about this specific Gladiator.

No. 247 Squadron was formed at Roboborough in Devon on 1 August, 1940 (from the earlier Sumburgh Fighter Flight, based in the Shetland Islands), became operational on 13 August, and was the only Gladiator-equipped frontline unit during the Battle of Britain.  Aircraft “N2308” was one of twelve Gladiators received by 247 Squadron (some profiles available on the web misstate this as “N2306”).

The squadron was expected to defend Plymouth during the day, but did not engage in any combat until 28 October, 1940, when it intercepted a Heinkel He 11 at night, but was unsuccessful in bringing it down.  No. 247 Squadron was re-equipped with Hurricanes in December, 1940.

The camouflage scheme was developed by the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough in 1939 for biplanes, and consisted of Dark Earth/Dark Green, with Light Earth/Light Green applied to areas that were considered to be “in shade.”  Some sources indicate that 247 Squadron aircraft were merely painted in the Dark Earth/Dark Green scheme, without the countershading.

I followed the instructions that came with the Xtradecal Battle of Britain set from 2010, and used the four-color option, with all paint being WEM Colourcoat.  However, I did deviate from the Xtradecal paint diagram, and did the undersurfaces and tip of the propeller cone in “Eau de Nil,” rather than Sky—just ‘cause I thought it looked cool.  Mr. Rimmell notes in his book that “very few photographs” exist for 247 Squadron.  I only found one on the web, and it was too small to be much use.

Thanks for looking at my entry into the Airfix Group Build.  I’ve enjoyed very much seeing the ways you all have made both old and new Airfix kits very appealing.

Front page is getting very long. Im stoked. This is the most successful GB ive hosted so far. So successful in fact im looking at doing a round 2 next year. Maybe make it like an annual thing  like the fleet air arm GB.

Steam hobby? Do tell. I used to work for an industrial boiler company for a while. Still sorta interested.

And thank you, Scorp, for coming up with the GB idea and hosting it.  I think we all appreciate your efforts.

Thanks Checkmateking.  Your Gladiator looks awesome.

Bs, what you were seeing was the culmination of about three weeks worth of work.  She sat in her box painted, but that was it.  I thought I'd try something new on this kit.  I've never clearcoated a model before decalling before, it took about four coats of Testors Glosscote before I had a suitably smooth surface. Decalled her, waited a couple of days, then hit her with some Dullcote.  Finished her up last night.  Here's some pics of the finished work, and one with her RAF stablemates.

Airfix on the left, Hasegawa Hurricane, and Tamiya Spit Mk.I on the right.  Next up the Spit Mk. IXc in the Middlestone scheme.

Mostly involves miniature toy steam engines, e.g Mamod and Wilesco engines. I am contemplating spending a substantial lump of my money (and some from my Grandad, as he's interested in them aswell) on an engine called a DR Mercer. Similar to a Mamod engine, except that it's a scale model of a real traction engine, and that it's custom built to your specification. Also has enough power to pull a child! (as seen on youtube)

p.s very nice Spitfire lewbud Cool
