Scary, but I got that beat.  When my parents were still alive, Deb and I used to make trips out east to visit a couple of times a year.  It's about 900 miles each way.  One February, we went out because there was an issue with my fathert's help, and despite being a complete and utter jerk, we was still my Dad.  Well we got out there without incident.  I did the drive in a hair under 12 hours...  I had my Dodge Daytona (1987) at the time.  It was the Pacifica version with the turbo charged 2.2litre and the racing performance package.  But coming back about a week later, we got hit with a snow store while driving on Rt. 80 in the mountains of PA.  We literally couldn't see ten feet in front of our car.  We had to crawl along in (What I hoped) was the breakdown lane.  They had plowed the highway itself a bit, but in doing so, they had plowed snow mounds where the exits should be.  And these big tandem rigs kept zooming past up at 60-70 in a blizzard.  Deb said she was glad I was driving.  She's a Toledo native, and not used to anything like that.  And I tell ya, the Dayton was a great little car.  I got it up over 150MPH once, but tit was NOT designed for that kind of driving.  We got home alright though...

I was in a semi, driving along with an instructor at my side, and the road ahead sloped down about half a degree, had a gentle curve to the left, but the tarmac was banked down to the right, and there was freezing rain just coming down.

I saw a car up ahead slide a bit, so instead of hitting the brakes, I down shifted until i got into 3rd.

As we got to the curve, and as i didn't see anyone coming the other way, I had aimed my rig as far into the center line without crossing as we entered the curve.

The instructor looks over at me and asks, "what are you doing?"

I says ta him, "it's not what I'm doing sir, but the rig is not rolling right now as much as it is sliding to the right."

"sliding to the right?"

"y'sir we're sliding off the road"

"what?"

So as I kinda' saw it coming we were only going about 15 mph max by now, and we slid across the

lane and the right wheels of the rig caught the gravel......sweet.....I already had the front wheels turned slightly to the left.

"It's okay sir we regained traction"

"take her home son."

I know how you feel.  I had a 91 Firebird once..  Great car, but at the time, I had a job in Dearborn MI, which is about 70 miles each way from where we lived in Toledo..  In the winter, the ride was a nightmare.

Yeah lol, we only get it two or three times a year so I never get any experience with ice. Hate the stuff, would almost rather visit the dentist than drive in it! And having a rear-wheel drive Trans-Am doesn't help.

I am from a town called Medford, just about 10 miles outside of Boston MA.  Yeh, we get a LOT of experience on snow and ice.  I have driven all over the country at one time or another.  Some folks in the southern areas seem to be very skittish on snow.  I think I terrify them...

Hope it clears off soon, as an American Southerner I like snow but hate the friggin' ice that comes with it. Don't get enough of it to learn how to drive on icy roads and not sure if I envy or pity Northerners that get enough to become experienced in driving though it.

Its down to sea level. About 4 or 5 inches. They're expecting up to 40 inches in some areas. Its the thick fat sticky flakes.

As for Maoris, i have no idea how they survived winters here. Im about as far from being maori as you can get without being a foreigner. The last 3 or 4 years weve had snow down to sea level. but before that we only got scrubby slushy horrible stuff, and even then only a little bit. Before 2008 i think it was, the last decent snowfall was 1992. (This is for Christchurch, not sure about the rest of the country)

I can't picture Maoris dealing with snow.

How much do you get, is it in the higher elevations or at beach level?

I like it every now and then. But im always worried its going to damage the rental property were in. Also i cant watch TV cos it interferes with the signal.

Hey Rich, very true I am not close to death, but at the rate I am building I will not get them done before the end of time! 

You're not THAT old yet... lol   I talked to my family a while back about my kits.  With a coiled brain aneurysm, one heart attack already, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, High cholesterol, high blood pressure, and a bunch of mini strokes, I am in pretty poor shape, so I wanted to make sure that my wishes about my stash were known.  My Daughter has promised me that any kits I don't finish, she will.

Hey thanks Rich for the kudos, I really appreciate it.  One thing though, I need to start picking up the pace or I will never get all these models done that I have in my stash.  I do not want any unfinished kits left for whom ever when I am dead and gone.  I have already decided that the next one will be straight out-of-the-box.  It would be different if there was someone to leave them to, but no one in my family has any desire to take up this hobby besides me.
