Hey wow, thanks for the stories guys! I went inside some sort of transport plane when I visited the Navy base in Pensacola Florida a few years ago and yeah, you could fit my house and workplace inside.....

Gee is that C-141 ALL in resin??? It'd weigh more than a small car!!!

 

It is all resin, but it is not solid resin.  It is molded like styrene is done.  So it has a little more weight than styrene but not bad.  Here is a couple of links so you can take a look at it:

I remember my first time up in a C5.  We were doing a deployment exercise.  So we are all standing at parade rest on the ready line as this massive beast taxies up and opens it's back end.   It was freaking HUGE.  I remember thinking  "How the F**K is THAT going to get off the ground.....???"   It still amazes me that those can fly.  I once saw something even bigger though...  An Antonov AN-225 at an airshow I went to on a trip to England a while back...  Now that was unbelievable.  They were selling earplugs at the entrance to the show, and when that touched down and taxied over near the spectator area, I knew why...

And here is a picture of a C-5A Galaxy from Dover AFB, circa 1973.

 

You get a little bit of an idea of the size of this beast by how far away you had to be to take a picture of it and be able to get the whole thing in the same frame.  This picture was taken right after the C-5's were assigned to Dover.  The base had an open house to welcome the new plane.  I can't remember for sure if it was open to only USAF families or to anybody.  Remember that back in this time, the access to the AFB was not too restrictive.  By the way, that is my late brother at the close far right.

Well, lets hold out hope that someone will release a styrene 1/72 kit.  Maybe the new Aurora will issue one.

I think those are Ford Galaxy's or Fairlanes.

That plane is a C-141 on steroids.

That picture really takes me back, those are the cars an average wage earner could buy off the lot, stock with around 400 horses under the hood, for passing only, of course!....lol

That my friend is a C-141A.  My Dad was a flight engineer (actually, he was an instructor, and also the highest level).  It had one of the best safety records of the aircraft used by the USAF.  They found that they could not load as much weight that it was capable of hauling because of the lack of space.  So they remedied it by extending the fuselage.  During the revamp, they also added the refueling recepticle.  After the refitting it became designated the C-141B.

I would like very much to sponser a group build of this aircraft!

C-141......"I always liked the lines on that airplane...."

It is deceiving, when you start to look at it, it really does have great lines.

"Super Spooky": a C-141A with three 105MM howitzers, 4 20MM Vulcans, and 5 Mini's....lol...

The C-141B stretch version, "Mega Spooky" has 7 howitzers, and 7 20MM Vulcans....lol...

The Flight of The Phoenix, the original, was a great film. No computer graphics, just a real airplane ripped up and rebuilt, the darn thing actually flew, I think it kiiled a pilot though.

I made a sorta' remake out of an Aurora P-61 1/48.....lol....still have part of the Horizontal stab.

That would be a very cool diorama. i have one Mono '47, yeah, I always like that plane. I bet there are still some flying somewhere.......

 

 

Dom, you are correct.  According to Wikipedia.org, Paul Mantz was a famous racing/stunt/movie pilot and was killed while performing touch-and-go landings with the plane.  You have a good memory.

Here is something that you might be interested in.  I know how much you like the B-52.  There is a small shop that is producing some resin pieces for both the 1/72 Monogram kits and the AMT kits.  Here is their URL:

Yeh I agree.  The original was much better.  The new one was sad.  Too much CGI.  The C119 is a great little cargo plane for mid range hauls in difficult areas with rough landing fields.  They are tough as nails.   I bet there are quite a few still flying in private hands.

That's right. I always mess that up.  I was thinking of the one that went down off the coast of Greenland.  The one that was the beginning of the end for Chrome Dome.

They said it was 'unarmed' and 6 crew never made it out, one crew hit a tree and he didn't survive the impact.

Nope not a C119.  But a lot of other aircraft, even a C47 a couple of times (Pre military days).  I always loved the C47/DC3.  Marissa saw The Flight of the Phoenix and has been begging me to do that one.  I was thinking of seeing if I can find 2 builders, and do one as the crash site with the phoenix.  But even the testors kits are a big ticket item to me.

Was this the one that had the midair collision with the KC135 tanker?  And had 4 pieces of "live" ordnance onboard?
