After posting with you guys for almost 4 years, I think I

just had my first 'Snitch' experience (Rich's evil cat).

I was peeling three layers of enamel from the old fuselages of

some vintage Lindberg F-91's, and I pulled one out of the juice-jug

full of DOT-3 i was soaking them in to run it under the tap.

A few minutes later, I go back into my model room, and the jug has

fallen over, emptying it's contents onto the floor, all over the carpet,

and splashed all over the stacks of kits i have neatly 'hidden' under my

model desk.

Good news, it did not spill on the desk itself.....spooky......

There was no cat in the room.....spooky......

So I was up to my elbows in DOT-3 for three bitter hours cleaning the

mess up, and displacing so many well hidden kits......nasty....

More good news.....DOT-3 is water soluble, has a low odour,

and thanks to gosh, the SHtuffIT actually drys up!!!...lol......

I have crinkeled wads of paint I peeled off those fuselages, looks

like post-sun-burn-peel off of Iron-Man's outer skin....lol.....

Dom

Hey Dom,

Really sorry to hear about your episode.  I hope you are able to recover.  I know you are very partial to the box art on your kits.

Out and about today and wished I stayed home. Traffic was horrible! Plus I hurt my foot last week and I should have just stayed off of it today, but I didn't! I did stop by a little LHS that been around for about forever and found this:

Maybe I'll get encouraged to go back to work on my F-105G...

Hi Jim,

I have the "In Action" book but still need to pick up the "Walk Around" for the F-105.  Those are great books for references.

The F-105 is one of the work horses in the Vietnam War.  My Dad was a crew chief on the F-105D for a short while on Okinawa just before he was assigned to the RF-101C.

I think we could easily start a group build dedicated just to the F-105.  I plan on building each variant used in the Vietnam War, the EF-105F, F-105D, F-105F, and the F-105G.

Thanks Guys!

I had put a layer of cardboard over the kits on the floor, as Ken mentioned,

i like the box art and didn't want to kick any or cause them 'shoe marks.'

Luckily it didn't have time to run under them either, just lucky, if that's what

luck looks like in a situation like this. Most of it has been absorbed and some has

dried up. It's a good thing it wasn't Transmission fluid.......lol.....

Jim: Not bad for a day on an injured foot, I'ld say. Great Thud artwork on the cover of that book!

Mizer: I love the Thud alright, any Thud.

Whoa there Ken!

Heck, I could spend the rest of my life building Thuds.....lol.....maybe get Russ to build a huge diorama airbase for a massive group display, and we could all load it up with ThudsWhistling

Mizer:

Speaking of engineers, here's something Harry Hillaker said about simplicity and the F-4:

""Does technology discourage simple approaches in aircraft design?

There have been debates through the years about just how much technology should be incorporated in any design. The real issue isn't technology versus no technology. It is how to apply technology. For example, the F-15 represents a brute-force approach to technology. If you want higher speeds, add bigger engines. If you want longer range, make the airplane bigger to increase the fuel capacity. The result is a big airplane. The F-15 was viewed as highly sophisticated because it is so big and expensive. In my mind, the F-15 wasn't as technically advanced as the F-4.

The F-16 is much more of an application of high technology than the F-15. We used the technology available to drive the given end, that is, or was, to keep things as simple and small as we could. Our design was a finesse approach. If we wanted to fly faster, we made the drag lower by reducing size and adjusting the configuration itself. If we wanted greater range, we made the plane more efficient, more compact.""

I was hoping to find one of the walk around for the A-7, but started to look at this and had to have it.

You know, I wasn't that into the 105 until I got started building one. Then you start doing the research, read the histories, seeing the photos, etc. Kind of makes the plane come alive to me. I still would like to acquire Trumpeters "D" one of these days, but it never goes on sale....

I figure that I will probably be doing the 105 for the Second Annual Berny Memorial Buid.

Just got done decorating the house:

LOL! Hope Santa doesn't roll over you with his new M48:

Jim: Nice choice there, who doesn't love the Thud! Kinda a jet version of the P-47, what a brute!

Dom: Sorry to hear about the mess but happy you were able to clean up most of it. On a much small scale I had the top come off a bottle of liquid cement in my tool box once and glued all my plastic tools in one big clump!

Dom, I'm glad as well, that your spill was no worse than it was. I had a co-worker who spilled several quarts of trans fluid in his car! Ripped out the carpeting and everything and still couldn't get rid of the smell!

As to the 105 build, it's had it's history of problems-you can read it here:

You know, even though I have sworn I'm not going to start another build yet, I find myself pulling out the F-15E to study the instructions, look over the parts, looking up info on the web..... NO! NO! I can't start another build yet! Stop me!

One oddity I see with the PE set is that it does not have panels for the side consoles. It does have a choice of instrument options, either early or late, but the side consoles will have to be finished by hand! Why do I do 1/72? I must be crazy!

Yeah, I think by the time I was done all the PE sets and shipping, etc. I probably have a C-note invested in my "On Sale" kit  Funny how they get ya!

That line about the potato chip makes me think of comedian Ron White, and his version....but I won't go there, as it involved a certain sort of, er.....dancer.

Bockscar, interesting take on the technology angle.Seems like an oversimplification and yet very valid. I'm somewhat partial to the F-15 as it was the first aircraft I was assigned to; great radar, long range and two engines. F-16 were called lawn darts by our pilots but then again they were called "ego drivers" by the 16 jocks. I would have been more than happy to fly either one myself!

Mizer:

That's true,

Harry gave us the Catalina and B-58, so he always had the right ideas about technology vs strength.

Long range, I would take the F-15's, as Harry said himself, bigger engines, longer range, and 'supposedly'

just as maneuverable as an F-16.

Personally, i would never call an F-16 a "lawn dart"......

I would never insult a proven combat system with that cheap epithet.

Harry and John knew a thing or two. Obviously, to some degree, the lesson has been learned,

but in history, only the big shots get the credit.

What with technology leakage, only an idiot assumes the enemy is not up to date on theory.

I figure "Lawn Darts", a "Hornet's Nest", or an "Eagles' Nest is what we need up here a few arcs wider than Alaska........LOL

"Lawn Darts"....LOL....is that what the guys in 'shot-down' F-15's say"....Hmm

------Just an attitude adjustment for me Mizer,,,,,,,,I've never shot another airplane down.....or killed it or its pilot,

so, jess' my "never-been-there-opinion" guys. i say that out of respect for the guys here, or anyone they may have shot down.

Well bugger. Really sorry to hear that Jim.

Christmas this year seems to have been a bit crappy all round. Im getting tested for hypothyroidism. My partners getting tested for crohns disease. My sister, father and brother in law were driving north for christmas when the wheel came off the SUV. Luckily they were driving slow so nobody was hurt and the damage was easy to repair.

Merry effin Christmas.

Scorpio, I hope thing come out ok for you. Mom had the opposite of hyperthyroidism many years ago. A friend at work has crohns and his is in remission right now and doing well.

I got a call at 6:00 am this morning. I thought it would be the worse news, but was told the dog is suddenly eating her food, taking water and behaving almost normally. I also find there is a big problem with Chinese made jerky treats (that she has been given) where dogs have become sick and some have died! (600+ deaths!) I pass this along as a warning to any of you who have dogs!

Well, now that I have been awake all night, I have to go to work......

Thats the funny thing jim. the opposite of hyperthyroidism is hypothyroidism. seems weird but hypo means slow, hyper means fast or overactive.

Ill keep that in mind about the dog treats, is it a particular band? or just all chinese made ones? i have a few friends with dogs.

Merry Christmas all and i hope 2013 treats you all well.

Jim

This Christmas is a blunt reminder that I need to count my blessings.

My little dog has been eating those Chinese made 'chicken' strips for over 3 years, and I used them to train him to have manners.

He is so small we use him as a blanket warmer.

Hey, Jim:

I was born In this trailer, how did you get a photo of it?

Nice big backyard, Huh? See that Elm tree? Ever try to climb one of those???....lol.....

Mikey, sorry to hear about the problems man, I almost lost a wheel a few years back, the garage put new tires on my car, and didn't tighten any of the lug-nuts. I gotta tell you, when I heard that 'wup-wup-wup' and felt the steering going, i pulled over, I lost a few lugs on the highway, and those guys at the garage didn't even say 'sorry' about that, so i lost them quickly, and have a new garage i go to.

Mikey, but what with the earthquake, losing your place, and now medical issues, that is truly nasty stuff. Life tends to be like that, for the most part.....Thomas Hobbes was right all along!

Hey, some punk elbowed me in the mall last night. I turned right around and told him he had a 'nice attitude pal', and it was at that moment he realized I was basically evil, so he promptly hid under his stupid base-ball cap and decided life is good after all......Angry......Angel.....hey, every morning I look in the mirror, and some evil bastige is trying to stare me down.....Whistling.....man, he is ugly.......Indifferent

Jim, I hope work isn't too nasty today, and Mikey, I hope you and partner have a better year.

It really can get worse than this, so....

Merry Christmas Guys!Big SmileYes

I know the feeling Dom.  Even some of the larger kits in 1/72 give me headaches.  Like the B52.  I am glad there isn't a whole lot of detail work with tiny pieces to deal with on those.  1/48 or 1/32 are pretty much the best I can do now for aircraft.  SF kits aren't as bad.  Most of them are either large scale or the subject is so large that it's a no fuss build of a large model, like the Galactica or the Enterprise.  Same for Ships, on the rare occasion I do one.  I really need to get an opti-visor sometime.  I used to have a swing arm magnifier lamp, but lost it in the move.  Those are great.

I personally love the F15 and F16, but I always liked the F14 a bit more.  It just looks meaner to me, and when those wings sweep back and they hit the cans, well, it's just an amazing site.  Years ago, the John F. Kennedy made a stop in Boston when they were dedicating a new wing of the JFK Library.  a squadron of her F14s did an overflight.  It was amazing.

The F15s that used to occasionally fly over our area were big brutes, but If they are as maneuverable as an F16, it would have to be through sheer brute force of those big twins.  I used to live less than 1/2 mile from an Air National Guard base at Toledo Express Airport.  Man they were always doing flyovers with all sorts of birds.  Sometimes they would have a flight of F16s up and practicing dogfighting.  That part of the city is more rural than city, so there weren't many noise complaints.  But watching the way those birds could fly made me drool to take one up. lol

Each of those planes have advantages and disadvantages.  FD16s make great fighters for interception and close in combat, they also make a much smaller target.  But, they also only have one engine to there is no backup if it is damaged.  The F15 has the advantages of redundancy with two engines, and I am pretty sure she can carry more ordnance, but she is bigger, and her technologies are getting a bit dated.  And her larger radar cross-section make her a bit more vulnerable to missiles.  The F14, has all of the above and add in a much shorter landing requirement.   But she is a very comples plane as all variable geometry lanes are, so more complex to maintain and repair.  All are the best at what they do.

This brings us back to the original issue which is why the One Plane for all military services concept will never work as efficiently.  I personally think that the bean counters in DC who make decisions like this should have to have piloting experience on combat aircraft so they know what the heck they are doing.  Although the idea of the jack of all planes sounds good on paper, it is not as good in practice.  If they could find a way to produce the Raptor more economically, then they would be doing something.

Not much Xmas here.  At least I made sure the family got something.  Now I am sick again, and I will  probably spend tomorrow in bed nursing whatever I caught this month.  All these medications I have to take are worse than what they are supposed to fix...  But I should be okay to sit around with the family tonight at least.

I'd sue the manufacturer of the Jerky to pay for the Vet bills...  Years ago they sold a cat food called Tender Vittles.  Turns out it had a very high ash content.  So high in fact that it could kill your cat by crystallizing it's bladder.  We lost a cat to it.  We made Purina pay for the $500 vet bill and the cremation fees for poor old Bobby.

Yeah, brother in law had his tires changed a few months ago, it wasnt loose lug nuts that did it, they had overtorqued the nuts and it sheared the bolts right off. So hes gonna be laying a complaint and a bill on their desk when they get back.

Merry Christmas!

Jim

Hi Jim,

I very glad to hear that your dog is doing okay now.  I would really like to know the brand of those treats.  We feed our dog treats as you described.
