 Sparrowhyperion:

I remember my first time up in a C5.  We were doing a deployment exercise.  So we are all standing at parade rest on the ready line as this massive beast taxies up and opens it's back end.   It was freaking HUGE.  I remember thinking  "How the F**K is THAT going to get off the ground.....???"   It still amazes me that those can fly.  I once saw something even bigger though...  An Antonov AN-225 at an airshow I went to on a trip to England a while back...  Now that was unbelievable.  They were selling earplugs at the entrance to the show, and when that touched down and taxied over near the spectator area, I knew why...

What is really amazing is watching these things circle the base waiting their turn to land.  They are so big that they look like they are closer than they really are.  So they look like they are moving really slow.  Which looks really wierd because you wonder how something so huge could stay in the air moving so slow!

One time I sat at the end of the runway waiting for one to land to take a picture of it.  As I sat there with my camera at the ready looking through the view finder waiting for it to fill the view finder, I didn't realize how fast it was coming in and all I got was the landing gear!

VooDoo:

That's so right. When they bank you wonder where all the big strings are holding them up. I always liked the answers to some simple aeronautic questions:

How much lift do those wings generate?  -The weight of the plane.

How much drag does that air frame generate at full speed? -The power output of the engine at full throttle......lol.....

How does it get off the ground? I remember seeing a clip about the assembly of an Airbus mid fuselage landing gear assembly, this massive house sized tub full of CNC machined spars......That is going to fly??????

- yeah

-sure.....lol...

Lucky you didn't get your hair parted by that incoming landing gear.......Big Smile

Grumble, grumble,

Guys, thought I'd have the A-20 done by the weekend but finishing up I went to drill out the holes on the top of the spine for the two antenni and I guess the drill bit was dull because instead of cutting cleanly though the plastic it cracked the seam line Angry I brushed on a little liquid cement and tried repainting it but the OD green was much lighter. It was then I realized that the green I'd used on the model was Polly Scale USAAF OD green which I don't have any more of and the paint I bought to replace it is Model Master USAAF OD green. Comes in the same bottle but the MM is much lighter than the PS. I figure I can add a little black or dark brown and get a decent match but the seam is now slightly visible and I believe that since I'm repainting the spine anyway I might as well try to putty and sand out the seam.

Grrrrrr, it's not a big thing but gosh it's annoying when I'm so close to finishing the kit. Hopefully I'll be done by next week.

Hi Cliff,

I am so sorry about your mishap.  Man, that has to be frustrating.  Good luck on trying to match the paint color.  I have tried that myself.  You may be better at it than I am.  It took me forever to finally come close but it wasn't close enough.  I had photo-etch seat cushions that were undersized so I tried to match the color.  Never got it good enough to make it work.  It is definitely an art.

Well, I've had it with these ESCI kits.  This afternoon I went to start touch up and decalling.  When I picked up the sabre to do a few touch ups I noticed a kind of wrinkly ripple pattern in the paint.  I touched it and it shifted under my finger in small areas.  It has completely lost adhesion to the plastic.  This was my last 1/48 Sabre, so now all I can do is another kit.  I don't have room to store the 1/32 sabre I have so I need to pick something else out of my mini stash.  I am so disgusted at this point...  I am currently waiting for some test styrene to dry.  I put some of the chrome on it to see if I can find out if it was the plastic or paint which caused the issue.  I'll sleep on it before I pull another kit.  Right now I am so demoralized that I don't even want to look at another kit at the moment.

 Gamera:

Yeah, I'm not complaining too much since you had far worse problems with your builds. Just as I said though she's at 97% and gee I want to finish her!

Rich, I swear if it weren't for bad luck you would have no luck at all!

Dom you still crack me up!  I just wish I had a digital camera back then.  That was back in the days of good old film, so I did not have enough left to keep trying.  So I never got the shot I was after.  No way to get it now with the way security is on the AFB.  I am sure the pilot was wondering what the heck I was doing down there at first glance!

Hi Everyone,

Well the new HVAC system is almost complete.  At least the air conditioner is installed and working now!  The only thing left is to have the natural gas company inspect the new gas line and furnace install to turn on the gas tomorrow.  So of course I have to stay home all day tomorrow because they don't give you a time of when they will show up.

That will give me some time to spend on how to figure out how to attach those nice ejection seat handles that I made.  I was looking at the following picture and I have a few ideas.

We will see if I can make it work.

Yeh, I know what you mean.  At least my 2 Mossies are coming out well so far.  I do have two possible kits I could do.  Both Revell, both sealed in boxes.  a 1/48 F9F Panther, and a 1/48 F-100 Super Sabre with Thunderbirds markings.  Or I could do a larger kit.  Maybe my 1/72 YB35...  I'd need my Daughter to help with the interior of that one though.  I'll figure it out in a couple of days when I get the Saber bad taste out of my mouth...

Thanks. Unfortunately no pay rise this year. Things are a bit too tight for that.

I know what you mean there.  At least you have a job.  At least that is how I look at it.  We have not had a raise for quite a while as well.  But it does beat not having a job.

Ouch Rich, I don't know what to tell you, I've had plenty of paint problems but nothing like that. I can't even imagine what could cause such a mess.

You might want to just walk away for a day or two before you start another, if you're anything like me I don't tend to model very well when I'm royally ticked off.

Mike: Congrads!!! Yeah raises are nice but I'm happy to just hang onto a job right now.

Berny ain't around to judge this, but, the wrapping on the handles look dark 'Forest Green' to me. Also, it is 'grip' textured, and like what Ken is pioneering, both green and yellow look like a tape. Guesses: 3M, Scotch

I think at small scale black works fine. That 'Chute has some Kind of activating hose that looks like they mean business, no to mention that explosive load in the lower right, port aft of the seat. There's also that weird connector strip in light yellow going into a black tube, that is probably the main 'Chute Engagement, do you see the stretch on those clip-holding bands all light green? Those Red flagged pressure tubes? but I Dunno.

Man, also, little detonation chains.....don't let an untrained person near that baby.......

Hi Dom,

I think the colors in the picture are not true.  I think they have a green hue.  I thought the same thing but when I looked at other pictures they are definitely black.  In fact I painted the top of the hood green to match this picture but have found it is supposed to be black.  So I am going to fix it after I get the handles attached.

Speaking of the handles, I still haven't got it figured out yet.  Since they are made out of steel instead of copper, it made it easier to handle while painting and putting on the tape but now it is harder to bend to shape.

Yeah Ken, just a green hue. That is probably why I thought Rich's colors looked chromate instead of insignia.

Well, it's Memorial Day,

Here's to Berny and Ken's dad.

Have a good Memorial Day gents!

Thank you Dom.  My Mom and I went to my Dad's grave today.  The cemetery where he is buried still has not planted any grass on his grave and it has been two years.  So today I bought 3 large bags of potting soil and spread it out evenly over his grave.  Then I took some special grass seed that is made for growing in the shade and raked that in with the soil.  Since it has been so dry here I also took about 9 gallons of water with me to water it with.  I am going to stop by there each day after work and water it until the grass gets well established.  He will have the best looking grave in the cemetery!

Hi Dom,

You totally crack me up!  Big Smile

I also have the Academy 1/48 F-86-F-30 Sabre in my stash along with the Kinetic 1/32 F-86F-30 Sabre.

I have given up fighting with the steel ejection seat handles.  But I have learned from doing the first three.  I am getting ready to find a copper wire that is the right diameter and put a coat of yellow enamel paint on it.  The copper will be easier to manipulate to the shape I need.

You saw that right away,

so nothin' wrong with your vision. 'Specially after all

An' funny thing about copper, it goes 2000 years. Looking

Also, I gotta' say, the F-86 is a totally sweet bird.

Well it's cooler, gray and damp outside.  Later it is supposed to heat up again and we are expecting some severe storms late this afternoon to tonight.  But not all is bad.

The Academy kit showed up this AM so I will be starting it in a short while.  This bird has a LOT more detail.  I am torn on leaving the tail section off to display the engine or closed.   I think I have to get a couple of paints, but I get my disability check Sunday and I suppose my Wifey might let me spend a few bucks at the local HobbytownUSA.

My Daughter gets out of school tomorrow for the summer.  I am trying to think up a good Daddy-Daughter summer build project.  I don't have two of anything here so I will need to get a duplicate kit of whatever I decide on.  This is going to be fun.

Have we settled on a date for the Dayton trip?

Hope you all have a good day.

Rich, good luck there! I've always had good luck with Alclad and Metalizer though the latter is so darn delicate. I'm crossing my fingers you have better luck there than with the last two 'incidents'.

I swear by the stuff, I've never had a problem with Alclad. Now the undercoat at times has given me fits since it has to be perfect, any flaw will show in the NM, but it's that way with any NM finish.

EEGADS That stuff is expensive!  Looks like I'll have to do Metalizer or regular MM Metallic or Steel enamel...  A 1oz bottle is like $12-$15 with shipping on eBay.  I'd need microfiller black base, the actual paint, and airbrush cleaner.  If I spent that much on paint, my Wife would be auctioning off my organs to the highest bidder. lol..

Rich, yeah it's expensive but good stuff. I'd tell you though to skip the microfiller black base, everytime I used it I got orange peel with it. Just regular matte grey paint or gloss black for high shine works better than their product. And I don't know what the difference with their cleaner is but I've been mostly cleaning it out of my airbrush with just cheap paint thinner.

Just a bottle of the regular aluminum is really all you need. Eight bucks a bottle aint' cheap but you can get several 1/48th aircraft of out of one.

That's my two cents anyway 2 cents

Thanks for the info.  I wasn't sure if enamel cleaner would work on this lacquer stuff.  I was thinking of polished Aluminum.  I have heard that you can use different primers to get slight variations in tint color so I would probably use a combination of Gray, Black and Dark Blue for primers for different areas.
