Mikey;

pardon my uninformed perceptions,

I can't picture Maoris dealing with snow.

How much do you get, is it in the higher elevations or at beach level?

Its down to sea level. About 4 or 5 inches. They're expecting up to 40 inches in some areas. Its the thick fat sticky flakes.

As for Maoris, i have no idea how they survived winters here. Im about as far from being maori as you can get without being a foreigner. The last 3 or 4 years weve had snow down to sea level. but before that we only got scrubby slushy horrible stuff, and even then only a little bit. Before 2008 i think it was, the last decent snowfall was 1992. (This is for Christchurch, not sure about the rest of the country)

Hi Dom,

Sorry, I am not very good at remembering dates.  I do remember December 7, 1941, and April 1, 1945, and August 6, 1945.

Well, I had to look up Okinawa, so you are forgiven.

But I know Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima.

Gosh, I thought you would at least pay me the honor of

mentioning August 9th, 1945 as well!...lol.....

I assume a Maori would hunt down the snow and kick it's Censored....

Hope it clears off soon, as an American Southerner I like snow but hate the friggin' ice that comes with it. Don't get enough of it to learn how to drive on icy roads and not sure if I envy or pity Northerners that get enough to become experienced in driving though it.

Yeah guys, cheers to the brave guys who stormed the beaches on that fateful day.

I am from a town called Medford, just about 10 miles outside of Boston MA.  Yeh, we get a LOT of experience on snow and ice.  I have driven all over the country at one time or another.  Some folks in the southern areas seem to be very skittish on snow.  I think I terrify them...

Rich,

Yeah lol, we only get it two or three times a year so I never get any experience with ice. Hate the stuff, would almost rather visit the dentist than drive in it! And having a rear-wheel drive Trans-Am doesn't help. Stick out tongue

When it comes to driving on snow and ice there are two types of drivers; ones that have crashed driving on ice and ones that are going to.

I know how you feel.  I had a 91 Firebird once..  Great car, but at the time, I had a job in Dearborn MI, which is about 70 miles each way from where we lived in Toledo..  In the winter, the ride was a nightmare.

I was in a semi, driving along with an instructor at my side, and the road ahead sloped down about half a degree, had a gentle curve to the left, but the tarmac was banked down to the right, and there was freezing rain just coming down.

I saw a car up ahead slide a bit, so instead of hitting the brakes, I down shifted until i got into 3rd.

As we got to the curve, and as i didn't see anyone coming the other way, I had aimed my rig as far into the center line without crossing as we entered the curve.

The instructor looks over at me and asks, "what are you doing?"

I says ta him, "it's not what I'm doing sir, but the rig is not rolling right now as much as it is sliding to the right."

"sliding to the right?"

"y'sir we're sliding off the road"

"what?"

So as I kinda' saw it coming we were only going about 15 mph max by now, and we slid across the

lane and the right wheels of the rig caught the gravel......sweet.....I already had the front wheels turned slightly to the left.

"It's okay sir we regained traction"

"take her home son."

man, my hands still sweat just tapping this out.

Scary, but I got that beat.  When my parents were still alive, Deb and I used to make trips out east to visit a couple of times a year.  It's about 900 miles each way.  One February, we went out because there was an issue with my fathert's help, and despite being a complete and utter jerk, we was still my Dad.  Well we got out there without incident.  I did the drive in a hair under 12 hours...  I had my Dodge Daytona (1987) at the time.  It was the Pacifica version with the turbo charged 2.2litre and the racing performance package.  But coming back about a week later, we got hit with a snow store while driving on Rt. 80 in the mountains of PA.  We literally couldn't see ten feet in front of our car.  We had to crawl along in (What I hoped) was the breakdown lane.  They had plowed the highway itself a bit, but in doing so, they had plowed snow mounds where the exits should be.  And these big tandem rigs kept zooming past up at 60-70 in a blizzard.  Deb said she was glad I was driving.  She's a Toledo native, and not used to anything like that.  And I tell ya, the Dayton was a great little car.  I got it up over 150MPH once, but tit was NOT designed for that kind of driving.  We got home alright though...

Totally agree with you on al points!  It was a much bigger yielding bomb but was dropped in a "bowl" that contained the blast.

I can't compete Rich,

you used to jump out of airplanes on a regular basis!...lol...

The thing I hate the most about winter is the driving and the plowing.

We got off easy last winter, total for 5 snow events, that's all, musta' been about 10 inches.

But I still hated plowing that crap.

Someone did a donut in front if Ivy last winter, she doesn't handle that stuff well.

I think it gave her a permanent heart murmur.

Speaking of rigs, yeah, a big loaded down rig with good tires, a lot of

the drivers think they are immortal, not all -most are very decent, but enough of them.

Throwing hundreds of pounds of slush and *** when they hit a patch,

blind you totally coming towards you or passing you.

they'd run over you and not even slow down.....shiiish....

I was very lucky in my rig that day, no traffic coming, no traffic behind, a gravel

shoulder, a slight curve not a corner, and thank gosh when I saw it i was only going about 30.

Dumb a** luck.

Posted at the Rhino III build:

"

Hi gang.

I just wanted to pass along a brief note about my absence here and at the Berny build. Things have gone very bad here with my mother back in the hospital with another bout of pneumonia.  This time, it is very serious and with her underlying COPD, she has no strength to fight it. The Doctors and nurses did all they could and it did little good. I had to make the decision to move her to comfort care (hospice) most likely this Saturday. I don't see her having much time left. She has been in a lethargic state most of the week and no longer responds to outside stimulus. I feel she is already gone. I also know I have a long road ahead as to settling of her affairs.

When things will stabilize for me and I can again take up the Xacto knife and the MEK it's hard to say.

Just so you all know what has been happening.

I appreciate your thoughts, prayers, and kind comments ahead of time.

Jim"
