I really need to get that Gripen back on my bench. I think it just needs a quick polishing before primer coat. I can't remember for sure :(

Yay Bsyamato!!!

Am ashamed to say I haven't gotten anything done since the first of the year. The kit just sits there - mocking me - 'Build me you stupid twerp!!! You started me, now finish me, stop fooling with those other kits, you clown!!!'

Ok, I add the voices, my models don't talk to me, not yet anyway.... Propeller

Well I'm glad this group didn't go completely dormant on me! After a few months of non-stop chaos, I have finally gotten to pay attention to my poor little Saab. (Quite the "Saab" story, if you get what I mean...) Still trying new things, such as taking the time to engrave the panel lines BEFORE I paint it... Those who were on the French GB will remember how that fiasco turned out. So here is the finished cockpit:

Untitled

Trying to find decent reference photos for this thing is nearly impossible, so  went with what little I had and did my "usual" cockpit scheme to fill in the rest. The most prominent thing in the cockpit is the base for the antenna, so I payed special attention to make it stand out nice and pretty.

Here it is all closed up:

Untitled

One thing I will give this kit is that many of the pieces have very nice detailing, such as some of the cokpit pieces and the engine. On the other hand, some very basic things are lacking, such as the fact that it has doors for what I assume is a weapons bay, but there is nothing there but blank styrene! Oh, and I did try one new thing with the cockpit. I have heard people say to add some clear glue to instrument panels to replicate the look of glass gages. I tried it, and you can't really tell in the photo, but I think it looks a little better.

The other thing about this kit is that some of the pieces fit beautifully. Some.

Others require quite a bit of fiddling to get them right. And while the kit has several options for various versions and markings including wheels, skis, or floats, it seems as though the float version was an afterthought. There really are no clear directions on how the float pieces should all come together. Well, there are no really clear directions for any of it! I think I have spent more time staring at them than I have actually building the dang thing. Anyway, the bottom of the wing has some stubs that are meant to line up the wheel well, and very clearly (though never mentioned) need to be shaved off for the floats to fit right. Even then, dryfitting shows I will have a very large gap to deal with when I attach them. Also, the float version requires a piece inserted into the wheel well that most resembles a plain piece of sheet styrene.

Untitled

Unfortunetly, I discovered, once the piece is in there, the wing will now no longer go together. It requires significantly whittling the piece down to make it fit.

Nonetheless, I am thoroughly enjoying this build, and I believe it will turn into a fantastic looking little machine. Next update should have wings attached!

Nice work Budd, I like it!

I laid down the second colour for the four colour scheme on the Viggen and started masking for number four. Sadly, I've hit a bit of burnout here, I kept trying to motivate myself to finish the masking but always ended up drifting off to something else....

Gamera - masking - GET TO IT!!!! Pirate It's only simple masking on a Viggen, right? Right?!??

Budd!!! Had almost forgotten which kit you were working on!!! lol  Sounds like this one crosses that magical line to force a person to be a "modeler" rather than an "assembler" !!!  A little extra effort required if you want something unique I suppose.Sounds like you've got it under control, mostly!

Assembly is going slower than I anticipated due to continuing to find problems with the kit that I didn't spot before. For one thing, after fiddling with it for a while, I finally decided to simply discard the rear facing machine gun, because fitting it into the cockpit simply requires too much modification. Again having no decent reference photos, and realizing that it would be harly noticable through the closed canopy anyway, I just decided it wasn't worth the bother. I'm sure they didn't always have it onboard anyway.

Another fun one is the fact that while the weapons bay doors will at least fit snuggly where they are supposed to, the doors for the tail wheel don't even come close. The place where they go is very shallow and small, and the doors are comparatively large and bulky. I attempted to shave them down at first, but it got to the point where any more and they would have shattered in my hand. So I applied a few dabs of filler putty. I have never had much luck with filler putty, but I am much more comfortable with filling sanding sticks than I used to be, so here's hoping it works out!

Also, my regular glue ran out, and the only stuff I can find here is the non-toxic kind that takes forever to dry. It has made attaching things much more interesting.

So I keep saying this to myself, but I SHOULD be able to put it all together tomorrow...

Budd: Yow, sounds like fun! Tongue Tied

I did get some masking done, I don't think the reference I found was entirely correct but seems close enough...

Budd, I'm not sure WHAT I have off-hand, but I can take a look in that Saab anniversary magazine that I had picked up, see if there is anything useful for the B17 in there for you. Gamera... I'm buying stock in masking tape manufacturers! Patience buddy, done right, that "lakes" camo is very impressive.

I got that magazine too, it really has had the best photos that I can find, and that's not saying much. They have been helpful, but I am still surprised by the almost complete lack of anything on Google.

Oh well, artistic liscense it is!

Have you tried IPMS Stockholm's website/blog/forum ??? They may or may not have walkarounds or pics, but they certainly have Swedish modelers who may have access to something not showing up in n English-language google search.

Why have I not thought of that?? Well, it's a little late for this bird, but next time, I shall remember that!

So here it is all put together. Next I get to do some filling and sanding on some pretty gnarly wing and float root gaps:

Untitled

I got kinda bored tonigh and started playing on Youtube. Thought I would share these gems with you folks! The first vid is a modern one of the fully restored and flying Saab 17 in Sweeden. The second one is mostly historic footage of them in action. What an incredible machine! Watching these, I can just imagine seeing and hearing it in real life. Sorry, I can't seem to figure out how to embed these, just copy the link.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rKokrXWRoU

And on a completely non-Saab related note, I was killing time while my car got worked on today when I came across this:

Untitled

For those who don't recognize it, it's the same magazine that did the special Saab issue about a year ago. And let me tell you, this issue is incredible! It covers in detail the origins of the F-5/T-38, various countries that have used it, special roles such as the aggresor squadrons, air demonstration teams, and even specialized versions like the F-20 and X-29! This is an incredible magazine and I believe I will be getting an electronic subscription...

Hey Vance, what do you think about hosting an F-5/T-28 GB next? :D

Wow, looking good Budd - you'll have to post the finished pics in a separate thread, titled "single-engined B-17", and see what kind of comments you get! ;)  I'll have to check out the vids when I get away from the office, love seing these old machines in action.

Soooo the F5 special is out now?? I'd been looking for it. Too be honest it's not a plane I've had much interest in, but there is an RCAF connection, and they were used by an interesting collection of countries... just "odd enough" to catch my interest. Maybe I'm getting sucked in by the advertising for that 1/48 kit that Kinetic released!

Not sure I'm the right guy for an F5 Group Build though. :(

More shapes Propeller

Exhaust and final part of Afterburner are reproduced by the kit but... not so the final conduct, then a scratchbuild of it is needed:

glued in the place (after i painted a first layer of grey)

Nose on, on the left side of the fuselage a step between halves was corrected with a plastic stripe and putty

on the other side more precise surfaces

and now wings!

At the next!! Toast
