Greg

Are you saying you did all this in one evening? (even with all the various clear coats etc?)

Knowing Joe......................yep!! Big Smile

Thanks guys for the compliments.  Greg, that is actually three hours of work (give or take).  I accomplish this by using mediums that dry very quickly.  The Tamiya paints dry almost immediately because I cut them with 91% Isoprophyl.  My gloss coat prior to the wash is Testors Gloss and its all sealed with Testors dull.  These are both cut with Lacquer thinner and they dry fast too, perhaps a half hour or so. Its just a matter of finding a system that works for you.

I have an update.  Its not too much but its something.  I painted the gear bay Gunze RLM 02 and gave it a post shade.  I think Gunze has the best RLM colors.  Shame they disontinued the aqueous line.  I assembled the bay and attached the upper wings.  It does not appear that Mayer's A-5 had an external fuel tank (or maybe no A-5's did) so I did not drill the holes for this provisions.  There are pin holes on top of the wings which I think I'm supposed to fill in.

After I sanded the seams, I then assembled the frame.  The starboard wingroot would not sit flush and I just couldn't figure out why.  Perhaps something was warped.  I ended up just pressing it down hard and Tenaxing it.  Its not perfect but good enough.  I then assembled the cowl.  I had I've heard the cowl on this kit is troublesome but I've had no such trouble on either this or the A-6 I built.  The key is to take your time and let the glue dry .  I attached the sides to the top with a touch of Tenax from the inside and let it dry for a few minutes.....then I added the bottom and front ring.  It fits the front fine.

The one thing that I hate about Hasegawa and Tamiya 190 kits is the design flaw of the wing root cannon bays.  The wing root joint line goes right through them and its not supposed to be there.  Its a pain in the Censored to remove them too.  Eduard is the only company to do this right but those are a pain in another way, they dont fit good.  Anyways,  I taped off the detail and got to the arduous task of removing that joint line.  I filled the joint with super glue and sanded them smooth. I then rescribed in the lost panel lines, which tricky because of the curved surface.  This took forever but I think I got them to look acceptable.

Thats were I am so far.  I should start on the scheme soon.

Joe

Lawdog.        That's some fine looking work your doing the pit is top-notch  I know I could have did some more work on my wing roots yours is a good pic of how it should look. I'll try that on my next one.

MUSTANG.     I sent a few pics of my diminished build to your e-mail thank you for the option.

Joe(lawdog): You're blowin' through that Hasegawa kit fast buddy!  I've seen builds here and over at SPAM done the way youre doing it here and it's always a pain, even to those of us who make it look easy, to close those access panels up to include all the nose pieces. Looks like youve got everything under control so far.

blackdog: I'll give a look/see and get those pics out here.

On behalf of blackdog here are his completed pictures and commentary that he sent to me via email. He had some sort of picture posting problem with PB. That place is more finicky than my dang dogs sometimes.

Blackdog ---well here is my fw-190d black 12 it was a lot of fun my first completed model in over 25 yrs. all paint used is from model master RLM color line and was put on free hand with a badger 150 with a fine needle and tip. its bin great fun building with all of you. if you dony want to pick wich one to go on the front page of the GB my pick would be the left side view

I'd like to be the first to say that the paint job and weathering on that build is purely awesome blackdog!! Thank you for being a part of this group build and hopefully you get your issues with your computer/ photobucket worked out.

BTW the pic is posted proudly in the intro post blackdog.

Thats a real nice model of black/blue 12! The camo is right on. Nice soft lines. The green 76 version looks perfect as well. Its a real pleasing model to look at. Great mottleing on the tail as well. All I can say is the seam line at the wing root/leading edge is somewhat visible and could be sanded and filled better next time. Nice work all around.

Thanks for all t he kind words I learned a lot of # ones in this GB first learning the forums is one.

Using future. photo etch parts and fabrication of a new tail fin. My first brake lines and I even put a steel pin in my back wheel strut.

Nathan.   On the wing root I tryd to make it better I tryd sanding what I could from the inside to the point that I almost popd though into the wheel well. I didn't feel I had enough skill to tackle it from the outside.

Make a mess I couldn't hide :)

When I use the rich formatting tap I don't get the tool bar that allows us to post pics. Kalmbach publishing is working on it........or at least they was :(

I would like to build another one with you guys but with out that pic option it's not worth it.

Blackdog, Stupendous FW 190. Very beautifully done. What a dynamite paint job you have done there. Also, the weathering is top notch. Sorry to hear about your issues with PB as I would love to see another awesome 190 from you. Thank for sharing your model and modeling skills with us.

Joe (lawdog), looking great and I very much appreciate your update pics as I learn a lot.

Thanks for the explanation about the various coats, etc. This is something I need to work on, it takes me forever waiting for stuff to dry. I might be overkilling a bit!

blackdog, wow! What a great looking 190, mate! I also cannot believe this is your first completed build in so long. You should be very proud of her.

Joe (Mustang) and other curious folk, I've not gone anywhere. Been playing hooky in a warmer climate for a couple weeks, back to the frozen north in a couple days. Wait, I guess that does count as 'going somewhere'. Smile

I don't know if I mentioned it here, but I went to a model show/contest last weekend. I tried to finish my German Jug in time for the contest, but I didn't make it, so I brought my King Tiger (for Eric's Steel Cats GB) to the show.

I never expected to win anything with my kitten, but to my big surprise, I scored 2nd place in the 1/35 armor category!!!

And to make things even better, Aires had a vendor table at the show as well with soe really nice stuff and even better prices (20% off when buying 5 or more sets was really tempting):

Here's all the nice loot i brought home that weekend:

Dora detail set:

Harrier II Plus cockpit (my favorite modern plane by far):

Ki-84 Hayate cockpit:

Bf 109G cockpit:

Bf 109 gear bays:

Stuka wheels:

I also got me a few Quickboost bits:

Stuka wooden prop:

Bf 109 exhausts:

Fw 190 A-8 exhausts:

Ki-84 exhausts:

Some friul tracks for my current armor projects:

And a few bottles of AK weathering products:

I also found a Stuka for only 40 bucks (normal retail price is something like 70 bucks here):

And probably my most important find at the show: LEVELING THINNER!!!! That stuff is really hard to come by and everyone seems to love it, so I just picked up a bottle. I tested it already and it is truly amazing how much better this thinner is than the normal one.

All in all, the show was a huge success for me Smile

Is the Eduard kit that bad that you needed a vacation?

Shatenspartan.     congratulations on your win that's really cool. Looking at the build I can see why.

Looks like a nice score on the aftermarket sets. Looks like you build  quiet a bit in 1/32 . ?

I have seen some positive reviews on those AK products.

Actually good timing Spartan,, I believe you wanted some sprue shots of Herman's 190. He got angry waiting and ripped open boxes so it looks like we are off and running. Here is Herman's 1/32 Hasegawa FW190D-9 with Aires gun bays and BigEd add-ons.  More to come..

Ooooh Baby! Handi, that is going to be an epic build. Now that is what I call a BIG Ed set. That sucker is loaded. It is certainly going to be a treat to watch Herman put the throw down on this one.

Thanks for those sprue shots, Handi! That Big Ed set sure contains a lot of goodies, almost as many as their set for Trumpy's P-47 (that one costs 20 bucks more than the kit itself). The Hase sprues look nice and straight forward, but there won't be much of them left on my kit when I'm done with it:

  • Cutting off and replacing the entire nose section
  • Replacing the entire gear bays
  • Cutting out the fuselage access panels for the radio equipment
  • Replacing the cockpit
  • Removing the gun hatches in favor of the Aires bays and covers
  • Replacing the gear legs and wheels with AM goodies

Looks like I'll only use the wing parts, stabilizers, the fuselage halves (with the front ends removed) and the clear parts...

Ahh you must be getting the full treatment Aires resin set for this,, I was tempted.. yeah the Hase sprues are free of flash and in Hase fashion no nonsense parts basically, I am going to open at least one access panel with the Eduard set,,,  I'm just not sure which yet,, probably the vertical fin tail wheel cover and maybe radio..... we will see,, either way yours sounds very ambitious I will be watching it for sure!
