Scott, those dragon 190s are a bear, but did you try adding a spreader bar inside the fuselage?, or glue the upper wings on first then the bottom half? There's a pretty good tutorial on building one of those in the Nightfighters GB.

Hmm....Brass barrels seem to be very popular here...

They are really nice to work with and add that nice touch. In addition to barrels the "warped parts" theme seems to be very popular here too now.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOH MAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAaN!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought I had warpage problems. Sorry Scott I feel your pain. Will make the corrections on the intro post. Sheesh!

Oh and love those 1/24 birds. Lots of work but well worth it in the end. Nice kit!

Well things took a turn for the worst. Started the build on the Dragon kit.

When I noticed the upper fwd fuselage was warped.

Got that straighten out only to find the wing to fuselage join area has a huge gap on both sides.

Along with the cowling assembly not fiting correctly either, Bang Head I said enough is enough and tossed the kit in the junk/parts bin. I have never had an FW kit gave me so much troubles. So I pulled out the Airfix 1/24th FW-190  (hoping I'm not a glutton for punishment here) for the build.

Thanks Guys. Yeah, since I got back into the hobby it seems I am just not satisfied unless I have brass barrels and resin wheels. Simply another one of me oddities.

Doug - The modeling Gods must have taken pity on you to save you at the last minute.

Scott - Welcome to the GB. Glad to have you.

Well, I have some progress pics to share here. But, first I need to give a great big Thinks to Mr. Aaron Skinner for his How To video on on how to choose a camera for photographing models. His tip on the macro setting led me to find that on my camera a seemingly improved my pictures immensely. Thusly, here is my first test.

Here is the brass gun barrels and pitot tube fitted into the wing. I carved grooves for the brass fittings using my Dremel and an engraving bit prior to gluing the halves together.

     000_00662_zpsbe369f88.jpg

Next had to to do a bit of surgery on the fuselage prior to putting the two halves together. The first step was to cut out the hole in the forward canopy shroud which the gun sight fit through. Then I drilled out the hand holds on the side of the shroud. Sorry, this pic turned out a bit on the bright side.

 000_0063_zpsd203b533.jpg

The next step was to take care of an annoying little aspect of this build and that was that the tail wheel well was molded solid with the tail wheel molded onto it. Again, I put my trusty Dremel and engraving bit to the task and carved it out, leaving just a small bit of plastic as attachment points for the gear. A little paint work ought to hide the attachment points. I am quite satisfied with how it turned out. Here are before and after pics.

Before:

After: 000_00612_zpsa4720158.jpg

 000_00622_zps8eb05780.jpg

That is all have for the moment. Upcoming is to glue the fuselage halves together and fit the cockpit in. For now, Keep bringin' It Gentlemen.

Started decaling this morning and nearly screwed the pooch. Put one of the wing crosses on with some Microset and decided to hit it with some Microsol. So I took the lid off the bottle, dipped my brush in and was *this* close to covering the decal when I happened to notice the bottle said "Microweld" not Microsol. Oops Embarrassed

Cheers,

Stoutfella

Good news on the Aero Detail Book Bish! You'll like it I swear.

News on my 190. I am having to fit the front of the fuselage first and then after that is dried I'm going to fit the rear of the fuselage to the lower wing at the back of the wing. Test trials are so far giving good results. Well...........so far so good. I'm happy with it anyways.

Joe,

I bet you were thinking of RZM Imports. They stock the Model Graphix Aero Detail books. I bought from them a few years ago and they did right by me.

Great books, well worth the $40 they charge. Even better if you can find it for less!

Best regards,

Mike

Thats it! You hit it on the nail. I told Joe about that site last November when I ordered the Fw190 Aero Detail book from them and couldn't for the life of me remember who  it was. What a mental block I had with this! Thanks a million benzdoc! I'm putting them suckers in my favorites right now.

Bingo! We have a Winner! Thanks benzdoc.

Greetings,

I worked up my courage and sprayed the Future, unthinned, about 18 PSI or so, without incident. I put on several thin coats, but didn't put on a thick "wet" coat as I wanted to be sure I avoided runs. So it wasn't a glossy, glass smooth finish, but at least a little better than the results I've been getting with MM acrylic gloss. I polished it up a bit with some 8000 grit and would love to dive in on the decals immediately, but I'm going to refrain until tomorrow to let it cure up. Pics to follow.

And I'm still waiting for the wheels I ordered 10 days ago. They were shipped last week via USPS Priority Mail from about 70 miles away and still aren't here. I don't blame the seller, I blame the Postal Service. Sheesh!

Cheers,

Stoutfella

Hey Bish - Here is a couple of options for the Aero Detail book that I came across doing a quick search. I got mine off ebay for $40.00. Joe had initially sent me a website that had them but, I can longer find it. Anyway these are at least a couple of fair deals

I have used Future exclusively as my gloss coating and have never thinned it.  I am using a Badger 150 dual action airbrush with the fine tip.  All that i do is (and this might sound silly) is crank my pressure up as high as it goes (i think 20-22psi) and keep the brush around 3-5 inches from the model.  I will go slowly across and build up the gloss with several coats.  Been doing this for several years and never ran into problems.

To clean the brush i just run a full paint cup (the small cup that slides into the bottom) of windex through it and then rinse with water.

HTH.

Matt

Stout, i have no idea about thinning Future. I use a badge airbrush with a medium needle so i haven't had an issue with it. I am guessing any Acrylic thinner might do, but maybe somthging worth asking on the painting page.

Mustang, fingurs crossed you get a good reply soon.

Bish

stoutfella, thats looking sweet. I was the same before doing my first mottle a couple of years ago, an Me 262. And like you i was pretty pleased with the results.

72nd is all i am really used to, haven't been doing it since i started modelling. When i am handling a kit like a 190, it may be quite small in my hands, but it just feels right. When i came back to the hobby 5 years ago, after only a 5 years break, i did notice my eyes were aching trying to focus on detail, which they hadn't before. But i got an optivisor and that was one of the best tools i have ever bought. I think when i finally get round to a 32nd build, my brain is going to go into over load.

What was the problem you had with spraying future.

Thanks for the kind words. As always, much appreciated. My only previous try at spraying Future was with the Talon airbrush. It's a beautiful tool when it cooperates, but is finicky as heck for me, and the Future started spitting and clogging pretty quickly, so It would suddenly shoot out a big, runny puddle. I was just trying it on a sheet of plastic, so I didn't mess up the NMF Mustang I was working on, but I haven't tried it since. I'm liking the Iwata brush enough to take another shot. What's best for thinning Future if needed?

Cheers,

Stoutfella

JOE RIX

Man, Joe, That sucker is just fighting you every step of the way. I hope stepping away leads you to an epiphany of a solution.

Thanks Joe. I know what the problem is finally. Just more warped stuff. I'll fix it.........again. Man this thing is  turning into the GB drama mama here. Never had this happen before and I sure as hell don't ever want it again. What can I do besides fix the stuff and move on though?
