Fw 190 Butcher Bird 2013 (extended to June 2014) Group Build

Good news, my LHS has the Eduard etched harness in stock and it'll be in the mail next week. I'm hoping to re-use the Ta-152 masks, as the components on the aircraft should have been identical -- hopefully they'll only take some minor adjustments with tape for the different kits. Does anyone have any observations on this aspect?

Thanks, Mustang! It looks like it should be a sweet build and I'm hoping to lay down pre-painting over the weekend. More PE harness is on its way, so if it goes together as well as it looks like it should, I foresee reasonably swift progress.

Hobby Boss has a BV-141 in 1/48 scale they are coming out with soon that I've been eyeing. I've got the Hi Performance Model version of that kit but it looks scary to attempt and there's not many of em out there either if I goof up.

Well I'm going to count this one as done!

Now, what to build next?

  This one is the 1/48 dragon.  I did the models on the first page out of order.   The other snake was a 1/72 scale Airfix.

That is a Beauty John! Fantastic demonstration of your skills. You have done a marvelous job all around. It sure has been a pleasure to watch your builds. As far as what to build next maybe you would consider joining us over on either the 1944 GB or the Carrier Aviation GB. I would certainly welcome seeing some more of your builds.

Thanks for the info back on the exhaust issue John. Yeah I hear you on missing this GB. When I started this whole idea I expected the usual post/page count for the build and never in my wildest dreams did I think it would make it to what it did at the years end mark. It was all of the participation in it that spurred me to extend it for another 6 months. Thank you alot for being a part of this whole operation John.

BTW: Which pic do you want to use for the intro post?

I'll have to try and keep track of this one. I have the same decal sheet in 72nd scale. I'll be doing Rudels bird with those as well.

Well here is the completed cockpit complements of Eagle Edition.  The detail and accuracy is awesome!  It even has the rocket firing switches for the R6 mod. For comparison check out the kit and Verlinden versions which are not too bad but the Eagle resin is way over the top.

Now for the critical decision: To display the engine or not.  The Verlinden set includes four cylinder head resin upgrades but to display the top port quarter with an open access panel but would require scratch building the rear engine components including the mounting support arms, associating piping & wiring, and exhaust.  Decisions, Decisions...........

I'll tell you what guys... I just went back to the front page and (once again) went through and marveled at all the beautiful builds posted and am in awe. Now that  IMO the most sucessful build on this site is winding down and soon to conclude, I just wanted to say to each and every one of you... BRAVO! Masterfully done and such a diverse selection to view! I know many of us will be building together again, but it will be hard to top the talent that was (and still is) being exhibited here. I congradulate each and every one, and am honered to have been a part of this GB with you! OH... and I cant forget the one who brought us all together... Congrats to (Mustang) Joe!!!

Some progress this weekend for me, the same phase for the D-9 and Ta-152. I hope to have a photo of the subassemblies soon. Right now both cockpits are painted and drybrushed, I need to pick out a few instruments on the side panels with color, the instrument panels are done (the Hobby Boss kit used decals) and the ex-Trimaster kit's prop is complete, with the wing mostly together. The HB kit has a separate gear bay and engine accessory unit, and these subassemblies are complete. I'm working on the Eduard harness, and just applied the spiralschnauze decal for Rudel's bird -- a few rounds of setting solution and some trimming coming up, then I pop the spinner pieces apart after cutting the decal overlap with a razor blade, so I can assemble the unit -- which calls for some RLM 70 on the one-piece prop itself first. I'm not sure which kit these decals were designed for but the incidence of the spinner cone in this kit is clearly different, resulting in an uncomfortable fit and plenty of trimming. There are a couple of tiny pieces left to add to the cockpit interior, then I should be ready for main construction on the D-9. I'm still waiting on the replacement exhausts for the Ta-152.

Progress pic -- I just mounted the Eduard lap belts, all that remains for the cockpit is to fit the stick and *try* to hit some controls with colour. The tail wheel is the last assembly needed before the fuselage can be closed up, and I've heard from that point the main assembly of this bird takes about 90 minutes...

The Ta-152 is at a similar point, though the wing is together now and I have the harness to start on. Its prop is done. The blades for the HobbyBoss kit need painting, then the spinner parts separating with a blade and assembly can proceed.

I'm hoping to get this D-9 together in the very near future.

Progress -- here's the finished wing for both the Ta 152 and Fw 190 D-9. The old Trimaster/Dragon/Italeri was a total fight and will need trimming and filling, the HB wing fell together at real Tamegawa standard.

Other work done today includes tyre black on the D-9 wheels, then the masks transferred to the 152 parts for the next round of spraying, and the tailwheel parts for the D-9 are painted and ready for assembly. That's the last subassembly needed before closing her up.

Thanks, Joe! I'm going to get the D-9 tailwheel together before I turn in (it's late evening Down Under), and hopefully do all main assembly on her tomorrow. Then I'll get the shoulder harness ready, and the canopy sorted out, while moving the 152 along, and the general plan is to have both, plus the big A-8 (and even a 1:72 Bf 109 which shares paints with them) going through the paintshop in the weeks ahead.
