Great work guys! Iwas looking for some advice on which AF cockpit set to add to myTamiya F8.

True Details #48488 that I think only includes the cockpit or the CMK #4024 which includes

a vacform canopy,PE parts,gun sight,instrument panel and a new cockpit?

Joe, i have finally started on my build. The cockpit is almost done and should have some pics today. The fuselage is together, the pit goes in from undrneath. And i have been cutting and sanding the wings to fit the PE flaps.

Nathan: I retired from my full-time job last fall, then worked part-time through the holidays. I'm "retired" again for a few months, planning to work part-time through the summer. So right now I'm getting in a fair amount of modeling time, though it's amazing how the day evaporates with other busy-work. Don't know how I ever got anything done when I had to work every day :-)

Thanks for the heads-up, Nathan, but since I've resprayed and am masking it off now, it looks like it'll be red. A quick Google search yielded this pic showing the area being fairly dark, so between this and the decal illustration, I'm going with red.

Nice priming job. Careful of the cowl color. I think very few 190s acutally had a red lower cowl vs. a yellow one. Yellow was the documented recognition color, just like 109s. Unless the particular Stafflen colors were red? But then the Call letters on the fuselage as well as the spinners were usually red as well. Red and Yellow are easily confused in blk & white pics. I'm not positive though, and it looks good either way.

Making some progress. First, made a decision on which bird to model. Kind of a coin flip, actually, as there's not much difference between the four options on my decals. But I chose this one, simply because I thought the markings were slightly more interesting than the others. It's listed as an A3, though the illustration below is an A4, so I won't mess with modifying the tail.

With fuselage and wings in place, I got ahead of myself, thinking it would be a good time to go ahead and paint the red panel under the cowling and save myself a step in masking. After doing so, I realized I hadn't done much test-fitting beforehand. As beautifully as this kit fits together in general, the joint between the cowling and the fuselage panel wasn't quite perfect and needed a bit of sanding and a spot of filler. So I actually just created an extra painting step and will have to mask it, anyway. Oh well.

With the cowling adjustment out of the way, I masked for priming. Decided to try Silly Putty in the wheel bays and nose, and was pleased with how easily that went. Much neater than my usual wet tissue procedure. I wiped down the plastic with a bit of alcohol to clean, then sprayed Mr. Surfacer 1200, thinned with hardware store lacquer thinner. I mixed it very thin, sprayed at about 12-14 PSI and it went down like glass. I was very, very pleased at the smooth finish, especially as I've been battling airbrush demons my last couple of builds. I'm getting accustomed to the Iwata HP-CS Santa brought me, and I'm really happy with this result.

Like most of my previous Tamiya kits, this one has been just falling together, requiring only a bit of sanding and a couple of tiny spots of filler. That cowling assembly was a bit fussy, as mentioned, and I'm none too thrilled with the molded-on wing cannon and pitot tube. I've already bent one of the cannon and I'll be amazed if the pitot tube survives. I'm tempted to just cut it off now rather than lose it on the floor if and when it breaks off, but I reckon I'll live dangerously and take my chances

Wow more warpage. Nice Kung Fu save on the wings Joe. Odd to have that many parts warped coming out of the moulds, specially on a quality kit? More than likely the Texas heat but still, go to Eduard's website, start a "tag" for help, and tell them the issue. Libor H. over there has gotten me replacement parts before at no cost.

Yeah I know what you mean Joe I've been there.............................wait a minute..............mine were 1/24th scale. Nevermind. You have your work cut out for you. lol

The 1/72 Quickboost gun sights arrived yesterday. My first impression was "Good God, Do I think I have binocular vision!". Yeah, their tiny. But, more daunting is the not one but, two itsy bitsy acetate lenses they give you to put on it. Pics to come.

I got it straightened out. If I hadn't been so far along on the wing bottom it would have definetely been replaced by the wing bottom on the weekend edition kit that I got the other day. I am already using the wing top halves from it though. I think Eduard may be getting an email from me. I dont know if all of this warpage is caused by the garage. Oh well onward we go..............

Well I recieved the MG151 gun barrels in two days ago and started working on assembling the wing when I noticed ANOTHER warp that I still can't believe I missed. So focused on the front of the wing that I overlooked the back where the wing bottom attaches to the tail/ fuselage area. Made some more tea this morning.............................

hey Bish, it would have HAD to been a Royal Class kit for me to follow him around lol!

Joe, I'm just glad several people here posted about what to look for in these kits!  The next step I'm "looking forward to" is mounting the engine. LOL  I have some painting and assembly to do before that fun.

You got that right Mike! I'm finding out stuff along the way even still. I have an idea about that engine your are talking about. I am going to build the back end of the plane minus landing gear, paint it, decal and wash and go ahead with the finish on it , THEN start mounting the engine. Just too much stuff to mask!! Thats my plan so far.

I only just noticed this post. Thats the way i went with the Stuka, i left the engine off as long as possable. It saved having to mask it, was easier to paint the engine off the aircraft and avoided possable damage while handeling the rest of the aircraft.

As well as two cats, we have lizards, snake, spider chickens, two mice a cockatiel and a rabbit. And they are all easy to look after and feeding is a breeze. The main problem i have is the magnet on the cats collars that let them in and out of the cat flap. I have to watch my PE in case it gets attached to the magnet.

I was looking at this last night and decided to try a more conventional approach.  I think I'll complete the build and try to paint with all the cowling pieces in place.  First I have to get that engine mounted.

We have three German Shepherds and three chinchilla's in the house.  So far they haven't interfered with my modeling besides some hair settling in my paint jobs.LOL

Indeed Bish. We have cats, birds, fish and turtles and all of them combined are no where near the maintenance that our one dog requires. It might be a clue that my nickname for our dog is "Wack Job". Yeah, the grain doesn't quite go all the way to the top of the silo on that one. But, she is a sweet dog. I'm a cat person also and my cat, Sparetire, is my best friend.

Hey Joe, I got a little goodie in the mail today also. A Hasegawa 1/72 Focke Wulf D-9 Dora that I won on ebay. Might also try and squeeze that one in by the timeline.

I do prefer pets that don't need as much attention. We got a house full of various pets, and i don't think all of them combined need as much as a dog.

Joe, OOOOOOOOO no, please. It would have to be one hell of a special kit to do that.

So WJT did you have to follow the dog around with a paper bag in order to retrieve parts of the kit?

AGREED! I've had my cat for 17 years now, and shes the best animal companinon any one could ever ask for. Got nothing against dogs, I have had and love dogs, but they need too much attention.

OOOPS!!! It happened again, I've told her over and over not to get too close to my work socks when I get home! She passes dead away! (LOL) Seriously shes a good ole girl and more framily then pet.

Attention Mustang and Bish, hey  guys sorry I have to post like this as I cant figure out how to reply to the orginal comment, stupid me! Anyways first off thanks for allowing the swap out of the A5 for the F8. The story behind it goes something like this. Our 7 pound Yorkie somehow jumped the 3 feet onto my workbench and decided he wanted my eduard A5 for a snack, I guess the chicken jerky he has wasnt doing it for him! So after the initial shock of seeing my hard work chewed and drooled on, I gave him a strict talking to and gave him dry food for supper as punishment. (he usually gets chicken and veggies mixed with it)  So, I guess it works out as the Tamiya kit is a breeze to assemble!

Just got my unwarped spare parts Eduard Fw190 that I bought on a 30% off spiff from Squadron today! Maybe some of the future parts will fit as planned!
