Nathan T

Mustang, are you sick of PE yet?

Hey Nathan. It's not the PE I'm sick of. It's the fit issue. Should be mostly behind me at this point though. PE is no problem. I have a poor fit at the rear of the L/H wing but will work it out. I have a plan in mind.

Nice work there Matt. Looks like you are fighting your way through the issues with the Eduard kit. I gotta say, I had higher expectations for this kit as far as fit goes. Most of it seems to be fixable with modest modeling skills but I thought it would be better. I have the A-8/R-2 weekend kit as well as one of their Hellcat kits that I am hoping is a much better fit than this one but oh well, that is modelling I reckon!!

You shouldn't have too much to worry about on that weekend kit Eric. My weekend edition is partially saving my Royal Class kit right now. Everything was as straight as an arrow in the weekender. Whats the difference? I dunno!! It worked out for me though.

Matt - Looks to me that your birds are coming along nicely despite the fit issues on the D. Very sharp detailing and painting. I am anxious to see how you deal with the step in your wings.

Jester, and all,

I also have the D11 weekend kit, the D11-13 combo kit, a D-9 profipac on the way and the Royal Class a8/r2 kit.  Hope that one of them fits better, or that i figure out the secret soon on the fit!!!

I had read somewhere that the kits were not the shake and bake type, so I have been expecting to see some challenges.  I think that it might have helped if I had also followed the instructions to the letter and attached the upper wing surfaces to the lower and then the whole assembly to the fuselage.  Oh well, live and learn right?

My plan for the leading edges is to sand them flush, polish and then rescribe the panel lines.  I will also be measuring the brass rod that I have, and if compatable in size will be replacing the MG barrels in the wings.  This will help in two ways, 1) added realism and 2) (more importantly) make it easier to fix the edge.  I have the cockpit glass coated in future and masked, just need to complete a couple more steps and then the D will be ready for the paint booth.  Must mask and attach the glass on the Ta152 be fore proceeding with the top camo painting.

(Hopefully with a winter storm approaching I will be able to get to this this week! Wink )

A few progress pics as I'm waiting for my detail stuff to come in the mail. Also had to order MM RLM paints today since what I had have disappeared in the move.

Just getting some of the sub assemblies together here. I know if I were to close up the engine cowling I can save a lot of time not having to detail the engine and not worry about the fit issue. But...I seen some great pics of the engine and I may give it a shot.

Just a before pic on the cockpit. This ought to be fun to do.

Before: Looking at R&R the wiring on the gun housing deck.

Here AirFix made an error on the instructions by labeling the wrong parts and steps of the ailerons.

large seam on the external tank.

Using the Flex sander help took care of it.

Will be using decals from Eagle Strike. Was relieved that the sheet had the stencil markings for the drop tank since AirFix didn't have them on their sheet.

So much going on in this group, I can't keep up!

Archangel, I just used a set of Eagle Strike decals and they went down with no problem, but the letter codes on the diagram for the stencils didn't match the decal sheet, i.e., it might say to use decal "R" when it should have been "C." Very confusing until I figured that out. Fortunately, I was able to cross-reference the Tamiya instructions and get the stenciling in the right places. But the quality of the decals was excellent.

I finally received my Ultacast wheels today, some three weeks after ordering them from 90 miles away, sigh. So I hope to finish my A3 shortly, with pics to follow.

Cheers,

Stoutfella

I have used Eagle Strike decals in the past and like them. I was just lucky to have ordered one for the 190 when I did otherwise I would have been out of luck. I'm pretty certain I also picked up a set for the 1/24th JU-87 but will have to do a search around the house when the time comes to start that monster.

BTW Anyone knows who makes a 1/24th FW-190 wheel set?

Cool stuff Shooter!! Interested in seeing how the Airfix kit goes together! Have you decided which scheme on that sheet you will be doing?

I'm going to go with the Walter Kuhne acft, the yellow nose bird. It looks pretty sharp.

Archangel. I couldn't find much outside of 1/24 D-9 wheels from Contact Resine. I ordered the wheels for my 1/24 109 through Design Marketing Intl. so I checked there and they didn't have anything for the A's. No dice on this one bud. Sorry

Okee dokee folks. Got it all masked for the priming and painting. I'm going to use a rather unorhtodox method on priming this thing. Since my mottle capabilities SUCK (at least freehand ones anyway)! I am going to prime it black. Then when shooting the paint coats on lightly cover the sides and the tail area so as the black slightly shows through. Got the idea from Chuck W. I'm going to try it on the spare fuselage shown in the background and see if it works prior to doing it on my build. Here's where I'm at now:

Just in case anybody is wondering I masked the wing cannon barrels with electrical wire heat shrink. Sorry no rustaze kit for 50mm wing mounted cannons on A8s.

The A-8s wheels would be the same for a D-9. Solid stamped rim with smooth tread. They rarely had the ribbed tread later in the war.

Haha, I was gonna say Joe, those are some bigg azz cannons. You can't leave them off and stick em in after the paintings done? Never say your freehand mottle skills suck until you try. Thats what I thought but it turned out to be a breeze. Show us your practice pics so we here can point you in the right direction.

I'm with Nathan, who did a super job on his mottle. I was really nervous about doing it, but with the right paint mix and low, low pressure it turned out great. Dive on in, Mustang!

Thanks for checking, I did a search and turned up nothing too. My luck would be after I complete the kit Trumpeter will release the A-5, A-6 version and there will be a flood of aftermarket products hitting the street.

Hey Archangel. Nathan T just posted something about the A8's wheels being the same as a D-9. If that's the case then the Contact Resine set should be a go.

I can't leave these off. Had to install them first due to the barrel flange. It'll be ok though. Been planning all of this in my head for a week or two now. Mottle skills suckin or not this thing is going to have a mottle pattern on it. Got plenty of practice fuselages now! Ha ha

Thanks guy! I just found someone that might have the wheels and even a resin cockpit set, wheel well sets. Sent him a msg so I'm hoping he will have those in stock.

Sounds like a sweet deal Archangel. I love all this talk of resin. I broke down and ordered some brass Mk 108 cannon barrels along with a CMK resin large prop for the A-8R2.

I was going to keep it simple and do a OOB build but the size of the kit and it being AIRFIX cries out for some extra detailing. FedEx is suppose to drop off the first order today which will be the guns and cockpit instrument sets. The paints should be in later this week.

Well FedEx came by a little while ago Big Smile Not bad, the order with Sprue Brothers was placed Sunday evening. What came in was the Eduard Instrument bezels, AirScale Instrument panel decals and their placard decal set. And having seen these on one of the modeling website...I got the Master Model MG-17 and MG-131 barrels sets, now those really do look sharp, the detail is amazing!

Whoa Nellie, I've got some catching up to do given the amount of activity going on here.

Joe - Okay, you are looking good and kudos on overcoming the all the fit issues. Now, bring her home. Although I too encourage you to attempt mottling freehand I am definitely intrigued to see the results from the method your going to do. You really are pulling off some terrific work there Joe.

Archangel - Looks to me like you're off to an excellent start. All the AM if you ordered ought to definitely trick your Airfix out nicely. other

Jester - Your mention of using brass rod for gun barrels coupled with all the discussion brass gun barrels reminded me of a site another forum  member shared a few years ago. I had boohmarked and thought you all might find it useful at some point. It is a chart sizing hypodermic tubing to different gun types in various scales.  It's quite excellent for using hypo tubing to accurately replace most gun barrels. I also will provide a link to an outlet for bulk hypo tubing that I found. I hope that you may find this useful.

Well I just got through shooting a coat of primer on the birdie. Tucked her away for the night so I can see the results in the morning. I know the fit of the wing on the L/H side at the rear is gonna suck but I have plans.............

Like the cross reference chart Joe! Quite an elaborate selection.

Thanks for sharing that gun barrel chart Joe, very well put together an valuable resource!!!

You leaped ahead of me a good bit mustang, cant wati to see it in color!!

The metal barrel for my little flak panzer finally came in and I had to put the 190 in a slight holding pattern so I could finish it up. Should be done by the weekend and then its back to the Dora!

Cool site Rix. I prefer brass tubing cause it cuts easier. I always use metal tubing to replace straight, simple gun barrels. Of course, I must have a $75 investment in all my different sizes...Tongue Tied

Hey Jester. Oh no I didn't either. After painting and decaling, the nose and wing cannon covers come back off and all of the details get installed. Stuff like the engine, cowl guns and details in the wing cannon bays. What you see here is a definite reverse order of the norm. Couldn't really see doing it any other way. I can't imagine building the engine, installing and having to mask all around that delicate crap to paint the rest of the bird. This way I'll have a decent paint job (god willing) and a cool looking engine to show off with all of the cowling panels open.
