Fw 190 Butcher Bird 2013 (extended to June 2014) Group Build

Archangel, some kit you have there. I rather like the look of these Eagle Strike decals. I've never used them before, but them seem to have everything. Mine include the drop tank markings as well.

To all you 190 gurus. I'm just getting ready to start my 1/24 190 A5 build. Does anyone know exactly what was located in the port side hatch in the area of the Cross emblem? I have details of that for the A8- it held an accessory fuel tank and oxygen bottles, and the radio was accessed from a hatch just aft of the cockpit on the starboard side. Would it be the same for the A5? I thought the radio was located there.

maxfax: I have pics for the A8 to include cutaway drawings and I'm showing the same thing you are. I'm assuming this but I think all the A's have the same layout as far as whats behind the access panels. Nathan T is a fair expert on 190's. Thats the person I would be asking.

Well folks I got er primed last night and started working with it this morning. Everything came out ok except for the starboard side which the primer can spit out alot of crap all over the side of the fuselage and the side of the wing. Lots of sanding this morning but corrected that. The boo boo at the rear of the wing was corrected by installing the photo etch reinforcment strap at the rear of the wing roots. Still some sanding to do to get it all right but its going to be ok I think.

I have a photo of an F-8 in a museun with the fuel tank and oxygen bottles. I am pretty sure this was the same for all A variants. I can't see no reason to change it. Later 190's used the compartment in the rear of the pit for the radio's. In the early version, it was indeed behind the small hatch on the starbord side.

Looking good there Joe. Are the outer wing flaps going to be PE.

Got the blue undersides done yesterday but its hard to see it on the light grey plastic. I will be putting to grey on tomorrow.

Way to go Joe. Nothing like some very positive progress.

Max... Might be a bit different but on the Dora and I think the "As" you can access the radio, the oxygen bottles, if so equiped the additional gas tank and the navigational compass. On occasion you may also find a camera man! I have a book with pictures of Heir Prillar taking a camera man aloft with the hatch open! Go figure...

Never heard from her again and Granddad has passed on many moons ago. She was born in Germany in 1960 and came here as a very little girl, Oh well... I'll build it some day.  By the way, glad to have you here and cant wait to see some WIP pics! I think you'll find a very talanted and skilled group of builders here.

Snow day update:  Was able to get some work done around shoveling the walk.  Sanded and trimmed the leading  edges of the D9, added the cowling ring and flaps, completed the cockpit and looked to paint.  On the 152 got the glass masked and glued in place and was set to paint.

Eudards instructions call for RLM 76 on the sides, bottom and wing tops, along with the brown violet.  Looked something like this:

I didn't think that it looked right so went back over the RLM 76 with RLM 84 (gray blue).  Here is a shot of the inprogress.

So after some thought this is what I came up with. ( And after that there are no known pictures of this bird)

There aint nothing wrong with THAT at all. Great job. Youre making this stuff look way too easy.

Ohhh nice paint work. The great lines of the Ta152 come alive with paint. Interesting how you changed the upper wing color on the Dora. I know Eagle Cals calls for rlm 76, but I believe it was actually thought to be a light gray primer, or rlm 77, which is basically like rlm 76, but without any blue tint. The montly newletter that Eduard puts out had a great write up about these large tailed doras and their colors, using the Japo book as reference. They are all available on their website to view. I think this one was just a few months back. I have a few color shots of this wing camo combination on late war 190s I can share later. Either way your painting awesome and I love the feehand work.

Thanks for the comments and info, I did not know that Eduard had a newsletter.  Thanks for the tip.  It was a good day for painting, I think that my garage being around 35 - 40 degrees helped somewhat, but not sure.  Some days are just better than others when the airbrush is concerned.

Feels like it took forever to wrap this one up, but I'm finally calling done on the A3. This one was a real pleasure all around, other than waiting three weeks for wheels

But the kit was up to the usual Tamiya standards and practically fell together, and I finally feel like I'm getting a clue with the airbrush. I've battled my Paasche Talon for the last few years, but fell in love with my new Iwata HP-CS after handling the mottle camo on this one.

The Eagle Strike decals went down nicely. The only clinker was that the key for the stencils didn't match the letters on the decal sheet, i.e., where the key might call for the decal marked "C", it really should have been "R." Confusing until I figured out what was happening. I was able to cross-reference the Tamiya instructions and think I got the stencils in the right places.

I was planning to dive right into a 109 after this, but I've gotten sidetracked on a Tamiya Sherman tank kit and having a lot of fun with it. Never built much armor in the past and nothing since a German halftrack back in the 70s. Nice change of pace.

Whoa!! That is one fine example of a 190 there stout!!! Absolutely nothing to not like about it!!

Archangel, How lucky you were to have actually been able to meet and get to know him. I realize the fact that it was a tragic and terrible time, but still, they were just soldiers following orders for the most part. I think these old warriors could teach us something today, and they are going away now much to fast. Take care!

I was going to start a 109 after my 190 as well. But have decided to do my WW1 bird instead. Looks like we are both going into unusual territory.

That is one great looking A3.  Very sweet job on the painting, looks very clean.  Almost makes me want to open the Royal Class kit and build one of those.  Although right now I am missing the Tamyia ease of construction.

Ok here is a question for all you smart people out there. The Revell of Germany Fw-190d-9 late kit is a re-boxing of which hasagawa kit? The RoG kit is very rare, even on ebay, but there are always hasa kits available. I do know that it is not the "fall of the reich 1945" kit as i have that one and it is very wrong and has raised details everywhere.

Stout - Magnificent 190!!! Truly, that is an absolutely outstanding model. The mottling is really well done. thanks for sharing that with us.

 I'm making steady progress. The cockpit is in as well as the upper engine cowling. Looking to get the wings and tail planes on as well as the gun sight and front wind screen over the weekend. 

Stoutfella:Man you nailed it. I don't have any references for JG1 birds. Who flew that thing? Man you can spit em out fast........and with high quality results. I aspire to retire!
