Just started adding the decals today and come upon a bit of a problem with the checkered nose. The decals didn't fit properly front to back. Firstly i thought i had painted the white to far back, but when i checked, i hadn't. So i assumed it was either the decals of the kit. So i decided i would just touch up the ends with black paint. But then as i was moving one set of the checks into place, they fell apart. So now i am having to touch up a lot of them with black paint. It's looking OK, but not brilliant. I don't think this kit is going to be up to the standard i would hope, but i think it will be passable.

And just to satisfy my curiosity i decided to measure the kit, and its about 6mm to long, most of it the nose section. The wingspan is also slightly to long, about 2mm overall. So not only is it to big, the proportions are out. Can't do anything about it now, but if anyone gets this kit in the future, be warned. Especially if you are useing the sort of decals i am.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Yeesh!! That's gotta be frustrating. I'm sure you will pull through it. I guess this is where true patience and taking the time needed really helps out.  Sorry about that chief!!

Nathan T

I know Mustang is the king of fixing warped plastic, but I just don't have the skills or paitence.

It took me a few trials and error but it wasn't that hard to learn. Just to let you know that kit almost ended up in the trash can a couple of times. If it hadn't been a Royal Class kit I would have started over long ago. As far as not having the skills just boil some water. Youre halfway there once thats done. Just take it off of the heat source before it reaches a rapid boil and you'll be ok.

Sorry to hear bout the decal troubles Bish. 6mm too long, holy cats, thats alittle bit off. If I were you, (and I'm not) I'd just remove the nose decals and just paint em. You already have the white on. I bet it wouldn't be too hard.

Mustang, I know who have coach me next time I find a warped part for sure!

Oh Man Bish I am bummed to hear about the decals. I have to cast my lot with Nathan as far as painting the checkers on. Heck, this seems to be the GB for testing one's painting skills so give it a whirl.

Alright, no more talk, time for some show! Well, hope this is show worthy anyway. All decals are on and sealed on the A-8/R2 with Alclad Aqua gloss. Pitot tube is a resin one fromquickboost. Thats all the small stuff I've added so far. I still have to paint the cowl guns and drybrush the gear. Next up is a sludge wash.

...by the way, I hate these 2 part swastikas, the white is never large enough.

A few nit picks I have. I made the defense bands about 1 mm too wide or so, the knight badge on the port cowling lacks the thick black outline compared to pics of other crates in the Geschwader, and the fuselage crosses should have a lighter inner color(rlm 74), but the decals came black. So, I tried toning them down with the airbrush, and gave them a slight overspray because they look quite dirty in the pics.

And the A-4: Did a small touch up to the paint on the port side. Looks better now. I still have to finish masking and painting the fuselage crosses, because they are goofy on the real thing, and no decals I have represent it. It got a glosscoat as well:

Ye, this does seem to be a challengeing GB. I did think about painting them all. But one side is ok and on the otehr side its just 4 squares that are no good. The black gloss enamel i am useing doesn't stand out, so i am just useing the remains of the decals as a guide.

Nathan... absolutely BAD AZZ!!! Looking great!

Joe... try the 4 piece ones sometime...lol

By the way Joe... Would you mind if I was to show another Dora-9 before doing my Pepi Jennewein? I wouldnt count it towards group build, due to it being partially built, Its interior wings and fuselage are together, primed and masked. One of my neighbors came over the other day and gave me a Tamiya Dora-9 kit that her son had partially built. Hes in the Army now and overseas and he asked her to give it to someone to finish. I was trying to come up with one I haven't seen here yet and I decided on one of the Jv44 birdies of the Galland Circus. When finished I want to give it back so he can see it when he gets home.

Twould be OK ?

Been puttering around on the engine section and started painting it. Seeing the pics up close I need to do a little paint retouching. Than plan on adding wiring and replace some of the plastic manifold ducting with some brass material I found at Michaels.

Have found some excellent photos of the BMW-801 that I'm using as a paint guide. More later...

Archangel: That engine looks great. Keep the pictures coming man. Can't wait to get started on my engine. Gotta make it through the fuselage painting and decaling first. Really like those big scale birds like yours. Just got no space to display em.

Nathan T - those birds are looking sweet! How well does the alcad gloss work?  I have been using Future for years, mainly because it is cheap and when I use the artist oils for washes it holds up well.  I never manage to get such a smooth looking surface though.

I am almost at the same point in my builds as you.  I have the 152 up on it's gear, but have to go back and touch up the underside paint.  I masked the wings to paint the NMF color, and when I removed the tape a bunch of the RLM 76 lifted.  I went ahead and sealed the NMF, so that I can go back and mask it and paint the underside colors again.

Thanks for all of the compliments.  Nathan and Scott, very nice work so far.  Unfortunately I have been busy with other things lately but I did get some modeling time in on the A-6 over the past few days.  The airframe came together in no time flat.  All I can say is this Hasegawa 190 is great fit-wise.  The only issue I had was the gap on the lower rear wing/fuselage joint.  No biggie though.  It also took some time getting the wing root joint (line) off the wing root cannon cover(s), mostly because it was in a tough spot to effectively sand out.  This line should not be there and only Eduard has gotten this area right on 190's.

I've heard cowl assembly on this kit can be tricky.  I had no trouble.  I first fused the lower piece to the two side pieces with Tenax 7R and let it dry overnight. I then added the upper piece.  No issues, it fit the front of the airframe like a glove.  On a sidenote, I did notice that most of the panel lines seemed unusually shallow on this kit, therefore, I decided to forgo primer and go straight to preshading with XF-1 Flat Black.   At this time I also painted the side fuselage (behind the exhaust) black and then taped off the triangles common on 190's.  The white stripe along the top was added with XF-2 and taped off as well.

As I said, I decided that I would paint in the cowl checkers in lieu of the decals for several reasons.  For off, Hasegawa decals are s#$t...not other way to say it.  Also I decided do this for simple aesthetic reasons and the ease of weathering the area later.  Paint just looks more convincing.   In case anyone is interested, this is how I did it:

1.  I preshaded XF-1 Flat Black on the cowl panel lines then sprayed it XF-2 Flat White.  I cut it with Tamiya Lacquer Thinner for extra bite into the plastic for the upcoming taping.

2.  I then cut out a few checkers from the decal sheet to use as a size reference.

3.  I then took out my trusty mirror glass piece and threw down a strip of Tamiya tape.  There is no substitute for this stuff, especially for this type of work.

4.  With a new #11 Exacto blade and the aformentioned cut out decal, I commenced to cut squares out of the tape.  I cut up numerous rows untilI felt I had enough.

5.  Using the instruction sheet profile on the last page (for decal placement), I then started on the port side and worked my way around the cowl.  For the front row of checkers (nearest the cowl ring), I took the same squares and cut a slit in them so they could be manipulated on the curved edges.

6.  Once I had all the squares added, after a few minor adjustments, I sprayed the cowl XF-1 Flat Black with a tad of XF-8 Flat Blue added.  I then taped off the cowl leaving the lower section exposed and it was sprayed XF-3 Flat Yellow with a touch of XF-7 Flat Red to simulate RLM 04 yellow.

Now for some pics...

I then redirected my focus to the camolage which will be the standard day fighter scheme RLM 74/75 over 76.  I mixed up RLM 76 by Tamiya's recommendations of XF-2, XF23, XF-66 until it looked right to my eye. It eemed too blue so I added more XF-66 Grey.  I then added XF-2 Flat White to the paint, thinned it, then streaked it along the bottom.  A dilluted Red Brown mix was then added as a post shade to certain areas.

I bought some Gunze Aqueous paints, specifically the RLM colors, through the blackmark......err I mean from overseas, primarily because I've read they are quite accurate.  That, and I'm tired of trying to get the upper surface RLM shades right with Tamiya mixes (See my D-9 elsewhere in the forum).  I started with the RLM 74 and cut it with Tamiya's X-20 Thinner.  This stuff seemed to behave just like Tamiya paint, but it wasn't as dense.  It seemed to initially go on a bit translucent so I had to keep adding more paint.  Once I got the ratio right, It did go down nice and smooth.  I then cut it with Tamiya XF-2 Flat White and streaked the upper wings.  I had no issues with mixibg the two brands.  I think I finally found a method for the upper RLM colors.  Once done, this received the sme red brown postshading.  Here's the results.

The RLM 75 will be next.  Stay tuned...

Joe

Joe - Let me just say that your efforts are downright masterful. That is some spectacular work. You appear to have a Zen like connection with your Tamiya tape as your masking skills are remarkable. I want to Thank You for taking the time to post pics and describe your process. I realize it is a time consuming process but, for me at least, this is what it is all about. Speaking of those seams across the gun bay doors that is exactly what I spent my day off this week working on. I built up a couple of layers of Mr. Surfacer 500 and very carefully sanded it flush with progressivly finer grits of rolled up pieces of sandpaper. This was indeed challenging on 1/72 in order not to damage surrounding detail. The primer coat will reveal how I did. Thanks again for sharing.                                                                                                                                                                          Joe     No, the other Joe.
