Son Of Medicine Man

On another note, 68 years ago today, operation Iceberg began on Love Day, April 1st, 1945.  It was the beginning of what is more commonly known as the Battle of Okinawa.  It was the United States most costly battle in World War II.  U.S. losses were over 62,000 casualties of whom over 12,500 were killed or missing.

Cliff, if you are so inclined to mention that in your group build, feel free to quote me.  I didn't want to hijack your build, but I thought it would be a thing to mention.  If you want to give the total numbers outside just the U.S. numbers, here is a quote from the Wikipedia:

"Although Allied land forces were entirely composed of U.S. units, the British Pacific Fleet provided about 1/4 of Allied naval air power (450 planes).  It comprised a force which included 50 warships of which 17 were aircraft carriers, but while the British armored flight decks meant that fewer planes could be carried in a single aircraft carrier, they were more resistant to kamikaze strikes.  Although all the aircraft carriers were provided by Britain, the carrier group was a combined British Commonwealth fleet with British, Canadian, New Zealand and Australian ships and personnel.  Their mission was to neutralize Japanese airfields in the Sakishima Islands and provide air cover against Japanese kamikaze attacks."

Allied Casualties and losses

12,513 killed

38,916 wounded

33,096 non-combat losses

Total: 84,570

Japanese Casualties and losses

About 95,000+ killed

7,500-10,755 captured

Total:  105,755+

Estimated 42,000-150,000 civilians killed

Ken

My understanding is that the US used those Okinawa stats, and the final tactics the Japanese employed there, to serve as the basis for the logistics in Operation Downfall.

The CIA has the best overall discussion of the planned attack on Japan:

Great pictures Ken.

Thanks to you gents for the illustrated history of Okinawa and other far off Asian wonderlands When I think of all the places we went to overseas, some I never want to return to (SW Asia) AKA the "Sandbox" but for the rest mostly coming of age in strange lands seeing and doing things I may never do again I know I'm a better soul for it. Bad TDY's were made so much better by guys we deployed with; a lot of self-sacrifice and teamwork getting through the work and looking out for your buddy off duty at the local hot spots etc. I have never had quite that level of friendship and trust as I had during the active duty years.

Hi, All,

I recently purchased a 1/72 Hasegawa A7, but didn't notice when I received it that it was the Navy A-7A version instead of the Air Force A7-D version. Do any of you have a 1/72 A-7D you would be willing to trade fpr the A-7A?

Russ

Russ:

I may be able to help out, I have two somewhere in the stacks, I hope I'm not too late,

let me know if you still need one, and I'll check for them this evening.

UPDATE:  May be a 1/48,,,,,,,,,creeky memory........Whistling

Hi Everyone,

I need your help again.  The petition that I told you about did not get enough signatures in time and it expired.  So I created a new one.  I learned about them since I created this one.  First of all, you have to get 150 signatures before it becomes publicly viewable.  Then you need 100,000 in 30 days or it will expire and it will not be reviewed by the White House.  So I really need everyone's help on this.

You do need to create a login.  Please do not hesitate to do this.  If we do not speak up now, we will lose out and will never get this back!  Here is the link:

That would be great Dom!  The resistance I seem to be getting from people is to create the account on the website.  I don't know if it is because they think that Big Brother will put them on a list or what.  I have the attitude that I WANT the government to know my name and that I am upset about what they have done!  Give me a megaphone!  I will post it on a bill board!  I proudly vote, and the officials in office are there by vote.  I want them to know that if they don't fix this, I will be voting them OUT!!

Anyway, one thing people can do if they do not want to use their regular email address is to go to one of the free email hosts like Hotmail.com or yahoo.com and create a temporary account there and use that.

Hi Len,

I will go ahead and tell you about it here since that link will do you no good now.

As a result of the sequestration, all of the demonstration teams of the United States military have cancelled all of their shows for the remainder of this year.  This includes the Thunderbirds, the Blue Angels, Air Combat Command (ACC) Single-Ship Demonstration Teams, Heritage Flight, Army Marksmanship Unit, Black Daggers, Golden Knights, Black Knights - West Point Parachute Team, and the Leap Frogs.

There was a petition created by someone else on the whitehouse.gov website to reinstate the funding for these teams.  But the petition did not get enough signatures so it expired.  So I created a new one which means that the process has to start all over again.

I need 150 signatures before the petition will be publicly viewable.  And I need 100,000 signatures within 30 days or it will expire and the White House will not review it.

You have to create an account on the website before you can sign it.  It is a simple process.  You just need to put in your name, email address, and zip code, then they will send you a link in the email address to verify that you are not a spammer.

Ken:

I can't promise if any, or how many will come forward, but I sent your link to some contacts in the US who may be of a like mind.

Time is of the essence so I'm working on a few more, we will just have to see.

An associate of mine has a much larger contact list of media people, so I've sent it along.

I removed the FSM link and your contact information for privacy.

Let's keep our fingers crossed it hits, and hits in time.

Thank you Dom!  It is also posted on the Blue Angels blog and the Thunderbirds blog so maybe it will get some momentum this time.  Lets keep our fingers crossed!

Hey Ken didn't say anything about this before because I really didn't want to get political.  I'll swing by and see about signing the petition later but I expect the thing will be glanced at and tossed in the White House trash can no matter how many signatures it gets.

Hi Everyone,

Well it happened!  I can't believe I did it!  I am still in disbelief!  Wow, a lot of money!  $510.99.  But that is the least amount I have seen spent on the only three kits sold on eBay in the last three years!  What on earth did I spend $510.99 on you may ask?  Well here it is:

Long out of production Paragon Designs conversion kit to convert the Revell 1/48 B-29 kit into either a 1/48 B-50A or 1/48 B-50D.  I will be using it to produce a 1/48  KB-50J Superfortress!  I will still need to do some scratch building but this will help immensely!

Dom

Thank you Dom!  It was on eBay.  The last two times I was out bid but this time I finally got it.  I reasoned that it is worth it because it would take an incredible amount of time to scratch build the parts that are in this kit.  Plus there is no way I could duplicate the precision of these parts.

It's true, I like scratch building, but even if you molded the engine cowlings after the first one,

you are into many ten's of hours. Then there's all the other parts in that kit.

If you only got 5 bucks an hour, it would still make sense to pick it up.

I`d be making resin copies of all the "hard to get" parts for future builds or to sell them maybe....

That is a thought, I have never done it before.  But there are a lot of parts in this!  I may consider it though.

Ken:

Making small molds isn't too hard, FSM has articles on the subject. Even if you just made a few spares or enough for another kit, it might be worth looking into.

There`s a company that sells a complete starter set for casting resin...think it`s Alumalite or something. I bought the set for around 80 bucks but never used it...had plans on casting copies of OOP figures and sought after parts, like the P-61 engines, etc. I have mostly everything still but don`t know if salt water got into any of it.

Speaking of that, we finally got the word that the SBA loan was approved!  We have 2 appointments with Modular home companies already and still investigating others. We were approved for almost 300k...way more than what we need but , nice to know it`s sitting there just in case....lol.
