1/72 O' Mania!!!

Well Ladies and Gentlemen, here it is!  My first build in, well, a VERY long time!  And my first GB!  She wasn't easy since it was 1/72 and the first new piece of equipment I had to buy since my return were magnifiers!    But I have learned so much with this little gem, and I thank everyone for their support and advice.  I know she's not perfect, but hey, wait till the next one!   So with all that said, I'd like to introduce the Yak-3.

I tried a lot of different weathering techniques.  Some worked well, some are kinda good, some, well.  It may not be an exact replica, but she is from the French Normandie-Niemen squadron that flew with the Russians on the Eastern Front (thank you Bish for your help with the research! ).  All my research never found an aircraft with the 3!  I found just about every number from 1-12, but no 3.  The paint scheme is a mixture of all the pics I found on google images.  Although I did find a pic of a poster that had all the aircraft (still no number 3) and one had a paint scheme very close to the one I did.  The shades are off a little too, but hey, I think she's adorable! Here are some more I took.  Yes a very pathetic attempt at "background" scenery.    But I had fun with it.  Some of the pics, you can still see the canopy is wet.....sorry, couldn't wait any longer!  .

Thanks for looking!  The IL-10 will be finished as soon as I figure out what to do about my decal dilemma!

Thank you sir!  I over did the weathering thinking that back then, under the conditions they had, too much weathering would be close to accurate.  Thanks for checking her out!

I pre shaded my 1/72 Airfix Canberra in the hopes it would break up the large mono tone PRU blue

At least you gave it a try, Theuns--more adventurous than I am.  And the blue coat looks very good!

Fuselage joined together.

And engine parts while the fuselage was setting up.

I used MM's anthracite, then applied brown and black washes, finished up by dry-brushing steel and silver.

Looking really nice, guys!

The background was a quick cheesy try at a decent background.  I tried to play off the bench top as a taxiway.....but even my 10 year old daughter walked in and said that runways aren't white!

Only to have it all dissapear, even with light painting! :-(

I will have to try and post shade with pastels.

That's looking good. I have never tried pre shading partly for this reason. So well done for giving it a good.

I got the first gloss future on the Canberra , another oe should be OK for decals. As a matter of interest toyou guys who like to do bi-planes , but like me after the 1/72 Albatross said NEVER AGAIN!. Check out the new tool 1/72 Airfix Gloster gladiator. I picked one up for arround $9 and it has very nice detail and inovative wayt to keep the fidly bits alligned while building....nice one!

Masked the canopy--it comes in four pieces, but I'm leaving the rear piece off, so the gunner's position can be open.  I glued the thing in place and filled the gaps using diluted white glue.

Theuns, I hear you about biplanes.  What did me in were struts and wings.  Then I ran across this helpful hint.  Looks like it might work, and I do have a few biplanes in the stockpile yet.  Might give it a try somewhere in the distant future.

I'm new here but would like to build an Academy P-40E for the GB.  I think I want to try an do it in a Russian winter scheme.

Interesting GB guys. I can no longer do 72nd as my eyes aren't good enough to do 48th without readers. Some good work here, keep it up!

BTW, it's interesting that one would choose a 1/32 model for the 1/72 GB badge. The magnified mustang is very cool. Love the idea!
