Mighty Mini's GB! 1/144 scale
Posted by MikeyBugs95 on Thursday, August 8, 2013 12:07 AM

Well there's a 1/72 group build so why not something smaller.... much smaller... So why not a 1/144 group build? Build anything that's in 1/144 scale. Civi or military, plane or ship or armor... anything 1/144!

Time line will be from August 15th and will run for, now, 288 days, until May 30, 2014. Date changed so more people could join have time to possibly complete more builds. If no one likes this I'll change it back or shorten the current finish date.

What's everybody's opinion on this?

I won't be able to enter this as I don't have anything this small. But just a suggestion if I may. This one might be worth a feeler thread first, maybe post in the ships and aircraft forums at least, as I think they would be your most likely subjects. It also might give you a feel for if there's enough interest but not enough people who can commit at the moment. There are a lot of new GB's recently, and the last thing you want is for people to commit and then hardly anyone builds as they don't have the time.

I personally find its better to have some lead in time for a GB.

Just my 2 cents I do hope you can get this off the ground.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

I'd certainly be interested. I agree with Bishster, and add a couple other comments. I would make the period much shorter, like 144 days say. After all, these are smaller models. Lon GB's just get dissipated. I just finished the FSM GB which was really quick (5 months), and it kept everyone focused.

Also, you should narrow the focus. The 1/72 GB, while big, is by it's nature pretty much limited to aircraft and some AFV's but not ships, cars, etc.

You could consider making this 1/144 only. Otherwise just about every ship model ever built qualities.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Ok. I'll post in the aircraft, ships, and armor sections. And I'll make the time shorter... and only 1/144... But aircraft, ships, and armor.

Like I said in a/c forum... I'm in.  But the start date will have to be a bit later than earlier.   Might be time for another Peanut Butter PanzerStick out tongue

Ok. Due to the few amount of people saying it should start later, I'll start it on the 15th of August, to allow people to gather needed supplies and kits. But I will put together a roster for now.

OK - I'm decided.   I just bought a FineMolds 1/144 Millenium Falcon.

I'm going to build an in-flight display, probably with internal LED lighting.

The lighting will be a first for me :)  Should be fun to weather too.

I'm in but no subject yet. I'll check the stash this evening for something fun. Oh wait! I'm doing an Ozmods C-2 Greyhound conversion with the Revell E-2C kit for an ARC GB, I'll post it here as well.

I'm in with the Minicraft 1/144 Boeing 314 "Pacific Clipper". The first commercial round the world flight, although not by choice.

It's the old Airfix kit, upgraded with fine panel lines and no more giant rivets.

I was thinking about the MC 1/144 707, but it just gets scathing reviews.

I like the MC Clipper, did one a couple years ago. I wish they would re-tool the 707 to the quality of the DC-8 kit. I've got a DC-8 working and it's awesome.

Well the usual sites seem to give the Minicraft one a good grade, the Revell/ Academy maybe a little less so. Decals, landing gears, stuff like that seems to be available.

This will be a good first GB. I'd say there's a fighting chance folks will finish their models because they are manageable, and time can't be wasted.

Jason, if your looking for really changing the look of a BUFF from the current offerings is Golden Dragon Conversions produced resin sets to produce a B-52D or B-52F.

I ordered a set from Draw Decals for my C-47 to model a Texas Air National Guard Gooney.

Count me in,

I think I'll go with my Sweet P51B Mustang. I'll probably be doing it in Beeson's 'Boise Bee' markings.

Jason, if you are still looking for a B-52, Squadron has the Minicraft B-52H on sale for what is essentially 50% off, I picked up a couple for myself, although not for this GB I will get around to building one of the B-52Ds my father was a tailgunner aboard in Viet Nam.

Yeouch, Cane!  Sorry to hear the bad news, that will certainly make things more challenging.  At least you can use your new cast as a painter's pallet :D

I came home to a parcel waiting for me, my Falcon was waiting at the door.  I popped it open immediately and was really excited by the kit.  It's terrific, and the detail is really good.  Only a small number of parts really, especially if built gear-up like I plan to.  But I'm going to be adding quite a few parts of my own so I might need the whole 143 days :)

Here are some pictures of the kit being unboxed, cleaned, and itemized.  It came with a nice paint diagram, and also weathering diagrams that are not shown.

I’m making progress on my C-47.  I had initially planned to build a C-47 and C-117 in Marine markings but have been unable to track down my C-47 references that are still packed in a moving box that seems to be eluding me at the moment.  The C-117 will still be completed as a Marine bird but there is too much work at the moment to put it to a deadline.  The tail is way too small so I will have to build an appropriately sized one from scratch and Eastern Express has curiously opted to mold an airline door vice the more prominent cargo door for which I am yet undecided about, whether it will remain or if I will scribe a cargo door into her.  Either way that’s a project for a later date but thought I would include it since there is 1/144 gathering here.

My C-47 will be finished in the markings of the aircraft flown by the 111th FIS 147th FIG; fairly simple with the only real differentiating markings being TEXAS AIR GUARD marked atop the cabin windows, having a white top, shiny bottom split by a black cheat line.
