Hey guys,

as I am waiting for a beadblaster to strip an airframe for me today I decided to catch up on some modling time.

The P-51 is in it's all white scheeme. I have been noticing that whenever I paint gloss over the new airfix stuff that have a bit deep pannellines, I need quite a few coats to cover it well, yet it still "pulls away" from the pannel lines.

In this case not a bad thing as the pix I have of the full size show dark pannel detail. It does however on the model make it look "toy-like".......................can't do anything about that now.

Pix to follow.

BTW, an all white pony does look so cool!

Strange about the gloss Theuns. What gloss do you use? Mabye thin it less?? I wonder if brushing Future on would cover it better? Can't wait for the pix.

Hi Nathan, normal Tamiya white enamel and the dayglow for my Vampire is Hunbrol enamel.

I did sand the models with 8000 micromesh feforehand, wonder if it might have anything to do with it.

Not sure. Sanding would normally give the paint(or clear coat) something to bit into and stick well. Unless the panel lines had dust or light grease in them. I could see how they could be hard to clean out before painting, especially if they are overly deep. Once you got decals on and weather the airplane i'm sure the model will loose the toy like look it might have now.

I am starting to think you are correct about the grease or release agent maybe. On the next Airfix I will try to wash it better with a light solvent and an earbut maybe.

This plane I am modling is known as "El Gato Rapido" Pitty I do not have the nose art for that.

Yes I would suggest using some kind of cleaning agent such as Polly S/Testors Plastic Prep n the bare plastic beforehand. it does sound like some mold release agent is still on the kit in the panel lines. Another thing that I might suggest is using a primer coat. Gloss White is often a bear to get on properly, and one tip that I learned many years ago is to first put down a primer coat of Flat White to give the Gloss White somethng to stick to.

Theuns, what you're experiencing happens with begining car

modellers all the time.  What's happening is there is nothiing for the paint to adhere to at the panel line so it pulls away from it (on cars this would the doors, boot and bonnet).  Stik is right, use your favorite surface prep (I use rubbing alcohol) and then a primer coat.  Now comes the fun part,  shoot the paint from a couple inches further away than you normally would and mist on your first coat.  Don't try to cover it on the first coat and then wait about 15 minutes.  Repeat until you have a nice even dull finish (usually takes me about  4 coats to do this). You are now ready for a wet coat.  Apply the gloss white as you normally would.  Set the model aside and wait for it to dry.  What you did with the mist coats is give your final coat something to hold on to at the panel edges.  This method also works with clear. T gloss as well. Takes some practice but gives good results, hope this helps.

Decals on the Mustprang, and I must say it looks weird in all white!

Hoping to complete by next weekend and then post pix.

Sounds good Theuns. I have been doing only a tiny bit of work in the cockpit. Almost ready to get some photos posted. Tomorrow most likely. Then it's off to Weekend Madness, 2013...!!!

Well, it figures as soon as I start on my Argintine Hawk, I stumbled upon some decals for an Uruguayan Avenger AND a Cuban Sea Fury... I have a sneaking suspicion I will end up doing more than one model for this GB

Nice work Stik. I'm alittle jealous cause I haven't had time to do much on the mig lately. That should change in a week or so!

Thank you Nathan. This build will be sidelined for the next 48 hours due to Weekend Madness, and after that I should be able to resume work full speed ahead. Hopefully my decals should be here in the mail any day now.

Monogram was the company that forced other modelmakers such as Tamiya and Hasegawa to step up their game in wheel well and cockpit detailing. When you compare the 70's vintage kits Monogram had the best stuff. Even thru the 80s, if you dont mind raised panel lines, the Monogram jets were nothing to sneer at. If you like jets, take a look at some of their stuff. They just reissued their 1/48 F-105D (another favorite of mine) with the Thunderstick II configuration, which has not been available before.

Man I would not mind a nice 1/48 "Thud" but I am way to lazy to re-scribe raised detail, mostly because I stuff it up usually .

Trumpeter has a recessed panel line Thud in 1/48.

Actually it is Hobbyboss, Trumpeter's alter ego, that released some new tooled 1/48 Thuds. They did a D and a F/G. But you can get 3-4 Revells for the price of one Hobbyboss kit.

Started on my Hawk 75 the other night. Got the cockpit together; I made some seat belts out of masking tape and was very pleased with the results. Everything else is 100% OOB. Not bad at all for a little Hobbycraft kit.

The P-36 family kits are very nice ones from Hobbycraft. Which one are you doing ajd? US, French, British?

Its actually the export Hawk 75M/N/O kit. Its the fixed gear, Cyclone powered bargin basement version that Curtiss offered. It comes with markings for a Thai, a Chinese, and 4 Argentine ships.

I have 5 of the Hobbycraft Hawks in the closet. This one, Pearl Habor defender, A/C, French and Mohawk. 6 if you want to count the Academy boxing that I have about 85% completed back at home. I'm really looking foward to doing the French one in the Vichy pajama stripes.

LOL! You sound like me. I built the Pearl Harbot one as Harry Brown's mount from that day. I have that one as well, that I plan on doing in Chinese colors. And a French one that will do as a Battle of France bird.

Hey lads, I am calling my FAD 1/72 Airfix P-51D Mustprang done for now. I just finished the prop decals and satin clearcoat this morning and will add the bombs later today. As soon as we have better light here I will take some pix as proof LOL.
