Big Blue

I don't think she'd win any awards, but...

Holy Moly that's looking good.  You would get my vote.

On the bench:  Tamyia Mosquito Mk. VI for the '44 group build.  Yes, still.

Great work, Blue! I'm totally digging the weathering! I'm about as far as you are with my Jug (still fine-tuning all the weathering). I think the exhaust stains look really nice, but you might want to add some more staining behind the supercharger exhaust. Most of the exhaust fumes were used to power the supercharger, so i think that area would be a bit dirtier. Unlike most other aircraft, Thunderbolts don't seem to show a lot of staining around the exhausts (supercharger and normal ones) BTW. Don't get me wrong, I love how the staining on your model looks, but I think the back end is a bit too clean compared to the nose Wink

Quick update with pictures.

The pictures show the model after oil washes, chipping and flat coat.  The flat coat over virtually eliminated any but the most subtle effects of the oil wash over the olive surfaces, but the results can be seen clearly over the grey and the white letters and stripes.

I tried my hand at chipping using a fine brush and Citadel silver paint (er... Runefang Steel actually.)  I plan on going over the heavier areas at the wing root with some dirt colored pigments to hopefully give it a more realistic appearance.  The exhaust stains and soot from the ejection ports are airbrushed (clumsily).

I am far enough along that I have started to remove masks and add on the delicate undercarriage bits.  For example, the tail wheel doors and their actuators are photo etch, as are the hinges for the main doors.  I have also added the mounting hardware for the bombs and belly tank.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words along the way.  I have really enjoyed building this and participating in the group build.  I don't think she'd win any awards, but I am reasonably happy with how it has progressed so far.  I have tried a number of new things, and the results generally look like I had intended (with some notable exceptions along the way.)  Still lots of room for improvement.

That's all for now.   I hope to have more soon (and maybe a completed build before the week ends!)

Thanks SS.  I'm excited to do it!  I really like those "out of the ordinary" German aircraft.  I have an Uhu in the stash that I keep looking longingly at too...someday.

I finally got the front page up to date. I wanted to do it yesterday, but PB was screwing up again (no big news, eh?) and the pics wouldn't show up...

Schmidty: I changed your entry to the 163. I love those little rockets with wings, so I'm really interested in watching your build Smile

Hey Silentbob, Glad I could help out. I simply Googled "LCVP images" and that particular photo was amongst the plethora of pics that came up. I'm sure you may find many other helpful pics there.

Silentbob, Joe nailed it, thats the only control panel and note the throttle on the right side. I liked the idea of removing the molded rope, I think that may be something you can do with some rigging line that would look great. It's looking good.

Thanks Joe, that's the first picture I've seen from that angle.  Hopefully I can find something in my spares bin that looks similar

Got a bit of time to do some work tonight. Got those pesky ropes scraped off and added some details.  Would anyone know what, if any, kind of instrument panels there are on an LCVP? I've tried looking, but I'm not having any luck.

Doug, that Corsair is looking very impressive.  I wouldn't have the guts to even try to tackle that weathering job, so your efforts are doubly impressive to me!

Tempest, nice start on the cockpit.  Man those 1/72 details look crazy small... great job with the fine detail painting.

Thanks to everyone for sharing your work.  Really fun to watch.

I have finished painting and applying decals to everything, and started the weathering process with an oil wash last night.  I'll post pics later when I have a chance.

Got a little done on the T-Bolt. Cockpit painted and grunged up a bit. Just about ready to dull coat.

Blue:  That's a great Jug.  The detail is really good. I especially like the detail you put into the landing gear struts.

Sweet looking plane.  I can't wait to see it finished.

Had no idea that Doogatx had retired. He still has his own web site Doog's Models http://doogsmodels.com/ and it has terrific photo builds and a wealth of information on technique. The site has a mailing list.  He may be getting into the professional end of things.

It looks like a very nice kit, Bish.  I like that the towing tractor is included; kind of makes it like two kits in one.

I will definitely need some painting practice before attempting that German paint scheme though.  But that's OK, I have 'till the end of the year. Smile  Although, this shouldn't be anywhere near as complicated as some of the German camo schemes some of you guys have done so well on.  Some of them make my head spin!

Make's your head spin. You should hear mine, it sounds like a bag of old spanners when I shake it. What with German aircraft camo, trying to work out what German armour camo to use and when, never mind everything else, its no wonder I am bald.

I am sure the German's had all this planned from the start. We might lose the war, but we will really mess with their heads in the years to come.

JOE RIX

LOL!! You are so going to hell.

That was decided years ago Devil

I know what you mean about trying to do 2 builds at once. I have tried it a couple of time over the last few months and I just can't manage it. I just end up focusing on one. And I think it ends up taking me longer what with clearing one build from the bench and getting the other one out. So when I finish my current 2, that will be it, back to one at a time.

I appreciate the support Joe!  I've just come to feel that I want each badge I collect to equal one build.  Not a knock on anyone else doing crossovers, it's just the way I want to do it.

I hear you about trying to do two builds at once.  That's why I am switching gears in this GB, it doesn't end until December, so I have plenty of time left to do a different build.  Hopefully it's enough time!. Ha-ha.

I for one would like to thank you all for making this a great site. I especially like the GB's where others are building along similar lines and the exchange of information. I don't know what happened to Doog but I've experienced nothing but respect and support from everybody. Again a sincere Thanks.

JOE RIX

Yeah Bish, Those were indeed some dark and unfortunate times around here. And unfortunately there were some really good folk who took it too personally and packed it in. Yet, for those of us that stuck it out, I believe we are experiencing the funnest and happiest times I've ever had on here.

I'll second that. From a pretty low point, we seem to have reached a new high and it just seems to keep getting better. Now if only I can get the forum to cook my food and wash my cloth's, I won't need a woman any more. Big Smile

obviously, I never said that, right Zip it!
