I don't know what happened on that pic, I bought an $8 tripod last year and the pics usually come out great.

Bish - I wasn't trying to be the first completion here. We'll see what happens on that Geeked

Thank you.

Hey Bish and Clemens, Given that I am already a month and a half behind the ball and that I've taken on a couple of non-modeling commitments I'm going to shelve the epic F4U Corsair for now. In the stead can you put me down for a 1/72 Eduard F6F-3 Hellcat Profipack. That should be much more manageable for my time frame. I finished my FW 190 for the Butcher Bird GB today. So, after I clean up and reorganize the bench I'll be to cuttiing sprue right directly. Thank You.

Clemens, I'll be doing the same for the US Carrier Aviation GB. I'll post over there also.

No worries, mate. I put the hellcat on the build list. You posted something about building Vraciu's machine in the carrier GB AFAIK. Please do it! I'll build my Hellcat for this one with the same markings and I chose the Eduard kit as well (the 1/48 version).

Well, its been a while since I've posted any updates, but I have made some progress.

Since last I put up pictures, I have joined the fuselage and (hopefully) successfully filled and sanded the required seams.  For some reason, I did have a bit of a gap along the belly that I'm sure was somehow my fault given that I am building the much loved Tamiya Razorback.

Once I was satisfied with that (at least until I spray my primer and see where touch up is needed), I turned my focus to the wheel wells.  I started with an overall coat of flat black, followed by a coat of Tamiya Yellow-Green.  I then detailed them using a combination of Eduard photo-etch and fine wire.  Between the cockpit and the wells, this model wouldn't get through an airport metal detector.  Finally, I used a combination of MIG pigments to dirty them up.  Here are the results:

The un-attached wires are waiting for the hydraulic pistons that open the gear doors which I will add after painting to prevent me from breaking them off.

After finishing with the plumbing, I assembled and attached the wings, as well as the horizontal tail stabilizers.   I always find it entertaining to see the highly detailed cockpit sitting in the bare plastic fuselage:

Other than that, I have been assembling and painting some of the small fiddly parts which I will add after primary painting (photo etch inter-cooler exits, tail wheel doors, etc.)

Right before posting this, I masked off the bays and cockpit (kind of scary with all of that barely-attached metal in both) and so my next step is priming and painting.  Hopefully I'll have more pictures to share soon.

BB: That is some seriously nice work you have done on the gear bays. Excellent attention to detailing and weathering.

Ken: You have done really nice work there. Keep it coming.

Ken: Nice work!

Blue: I love your Jug! I still have to detail the weel weels on mine, but i got a lot of inspiration by looking at your pics! I never had any fit issues at the belly of my Tamiya P-47s, but i always ahave a bit of trouble on the lower wing root joint (a toothpick in the right place fixes that issue though)

I hope it's not too late to sign up, but if I can, I'd like to do my 1/32 Lindberg LCVP.  I'm planning on buying some figures for it and eventually turn it into a Normandy diorama.  It'll be the first naval craft I've ever built (excluding an awful carrier I built when I was in middle school) and the first diorama I've done in a long time.

Not to late at all bob. Sign up for this runs to the end of the year. I see your getting hooked on GB's already.

Going slightly off topic, this is probably a silly question, but given your avatar and your current build, i take it your a Star Wars fan.

My wife and students might say it borders on an obsession, but my dad got me hooked pretty much out of the womb, and the same for my son.

A brief update and request for advice:

Update first.  Since my last post, I have primed the majority of the external surfaces using Mr. Surfacer 1200 cut with Mr. Leveling Thinner.  No pictures, because it pretty much just looks like a gray fuselage.  I did have a few seams that required additional attention.  Oh joy.

Now the advice.  I am ready to start painting actual colors, and am slightly hung up on the order in which to proceed.  As I have mentioned in other post, I have only recently returned to the hobby after 35 is years, and this is the first build that I have undertaken with invasion stripes.  On other builds, I have sprayed the overall color first (both have been NMF), and then painted the required unit and theater stripes afterwards.  This job is a bit more complicated:

I have spent some time in a graphics program to create a template for cutting the mask to leave the space around the "4" (and the "B" on the other side), as well as a round cutout so that the stripes don't show under the white star.  Now my question is the paint order.

Do I paint the stripes first, then mask and paint the gray & olive drab?  The advantage here is it will be easier to cover the primer than the olive paint with the white for the stripes.  Spray white first, then cover with black... both can be done with thin coats.  The tricky part is that unless I am comfortable with black and white over spray into the area to be painted olive, I would need to mask the future olive areas, paint stripes, then mask the stripe area to paint olive/gray.  I would need to carefully line up the irregularly shaped horizontal edge with the already painted shapes.  Or...

Do I paint the aircraft, then mask off and paint the stripes?  Advantage here is that it seems like it will be easier to mask since I can mask off the striped area and I only have to line up the odd shaped horizontal edges once.  Define the overall area, spray white, cover white, spray black.  The downside is that I am worried about paint build up given that the olive & gray will be harder to cover with the white.

Is that clear?  Am I making it more complicated than it needs to be?  What do you folks with more experience think?

Thanks in advance,

Blue

I'm not trying to say what you should do, as everyone has a favorite approach on how to mask/paint their models. Here's what I would do:

  • pre-shade the areas with the stripes
  • spray white
  • mask off the white stripes and spray the black areas
  • pre-shade the rest of the model
  • proceed painting the OD and NG as usual

This approach worked great on my Thunderbolt, although I didn't paint and mask any stripes but yellow lower surfaces and tailplane. No big difference though...

Do you plan on painting the fuselage code and stars? if you do, I'd do the following:

  • pre-shade areas with stripes and insignia
  • spray white
  • mask white stripes, fuselage code and star
  • paint blue bars and circle around the stars
  • mask blue areas
  • paint black stripes
  • mask stripes (stars should still be masked)
  • pre-shade rest of the model
  • spray OD and NG as usual in thin layers so you don't get a ridge between the camo and the insignia

I hope this helps...

Hey Blue, saw your post, though I would add a bit. Not sure what type of paint you use, but I've never had trouble with white. I can cover black with my white if I wanted to, with only 2-3 coats. I use Gunze or Tamiya off white. I would definately paint your stripes first, then mask them, then paint the cammo. Much less overall masking, and that way, you don't have to worry about paint build up over the edges.

Goodday Folks!! Newer member of the site and want to get involved in more GBs. I'd like to get in on this GB with my Airfix Lancaster B.II. 1-72  (withdrawn from service Sept 44). Don't see this big bird on the build list so I offer it up for this GB. Thanks!!

Awesome, thanks! Will get this one on the go prob in a week or so. Gonna get my WNW DH.2 'stringbag' off the bench before the Lanc dominates the space.

Hey There Rob! Welcome to the forum and definitely welcome to the GB. It is certainly awesome to have you among us here. I can assure you that you are going to enjoy yourself amongst the fantastic folks that are here. Now to the important stuff, oooohh.. a Lancaster! Now I'm looking forward to watching you build that up. And I am quite interested in how the Airfix mold measures up. Is that a newer mold or one of their older ones? I admit I am not completely savvy with newer Airfix stuff but, I definitely hear good things about their new molds. Glad to have ya Rob!

Thanks for the warm welcome Joe! I 'just' finished Revell's VERY excellent offering from them (my avatar pic). Now, I have the Airfix to compare. I am rather enjoying Airfix's new tooling process, so, I'm sure this big Lanc will not disappoint. My only 'heartache' is, as a Canadian, I love any company who produces Cdn versions of planes. HOWEVER, the Cdn version "Z-Zombie" does not have the rearward facing belly guns!! I was looking forward to this feature so, I may have to forego the Cdn version in favour of the Brit "Fanny Ferkin". We'll see how it goes (I REALLY want to include those guns!!).

Shatten Spartan, This DH.2 is the single most complicated build I've taken on. I got the "Duellists" DH.2 and Fokker E.III set in Dec of '12. I knocked off the E.III pretty quick and I'm just NOW getting on to finishing the DH.2. Solidly engineered masterpiece by WNW, of course, it's just the rigging. I figure at the end there will be almost 80ish individual strands of rigging for this beast. The lack of a tail, just booms made it quite frail as well, thus, it's been on the bench for over a year. Thank goodness for EZ line!!

Jsmyth: Appears to me that you're off to a great start on your B-17. Really nice work on the ball turret.

Rob: Well, That's a bummer concerning the gun configuration for the Canadian version. Concerning your DH.2, please feel free to share some pics of that beaut. No doubt about EZ Line. May very well be one of the greatest contributions to plastic modeling since liquid cement.Big Smile
