Hey guys, I thought I'd post some pics of the nice loot I got at last weekend's model show.

First of all, I participated in the contest (I didn't get my P-47 done in time, so I brought my royal kitty instead)I never expected to win anything with my kitten, but to my big surprise, I scored 2nd place in the 1/35 armor category!!!

Here's all the nice stuff i brought home that weekend:

Dora detail set:

Harrier II Plus cockpit (my favorite modern plane by far):

Ki-84 Hayate cockpit:

Bf 109G cockpit:

Bf 109 gear bays:

Stuka wheels (for my project for this GB):

I also got me a few Quickboost bits:

Stuka wooden prop (for my Hase Stuka as well):

Bf 109 exhausts:

Fw 190 A-8 exhausts:

Ki-84 exhausts:

Some friul tracks for my current armor projects:

And a few bottles of AK weathering products:

I also found a Stuka for only 40 bucks (normal retail price is something like 70 bucks here). I probably won't build it for this GB, but at this price I had to have it (I could buy the correction set for the money I saved):

And probably my most important find at the show: LEVELING THINNER!!!! That stuff is really hard to come by and everyone seems to love it, so I just picked up a bottle. I tested it already and it is truly amazing how much better this thinner is than the normal one.

All of that makes me a really happy camper Big Smile

Very well done on the King Tiger. Congrats!

Pretty nice haul on the AM. I see you got your wheels and props. I used that leveling thinner for the first time the other day. It is very good stuff.

Well done there, certainly a well deserved prize there.

A nice haul as well. I have just used those AK DAK products on the 88, the filter defiantly grew on me and I did like the dust effects. And a nice selection of AM goodies there.

I also used that levelling thinner for the first time recently, along with using the Mr Surfacer for the first time, I really liked the finish it gave, I think I have been converted to priming.

This probably isn't news to many (if any) of you; but the series World War II In Color is being re-run a lot on the American Heroes Channel (used to be Military Channel).

Well, the episode Lightning War has some nice footage of Stuka's in action in the first 10 mins or so.  And then some more quick shots throughout the episode.  It is showing again at 1am Central, so set you DVR's...or VCR's Stick out tongue

What!!?? The Military Channel is now the American Hero's channel?? Does this means the programing will suck even more.... ? That is a sweet series btw...it is also on YouTube.

Great job in the contest Clemens. Those are some sweet goodies you picked up. Why can't Quickboost make a set of D or G stuka props in 48?? All the kit ones out there are horse crap!

I just can't figure out why these companies make certain things in some scales but not others. They do those props for the 72nd D/G as well as 32nd, but not 48th. Yet in 48th they have the un covered undercarriage but they don't do them in 72nd.

The lack of AM in some subjects also confuses me.  I've been looking like crazy for some resin cockpit sets for a Revell Dauntless and Avenger.  Lots of stuff in 1/32 and 1/72, but nothing in 1/48.  I'm almost tempted to just by better kits and save those ones for my son when he gets old enough...

Bob, I did find some AM stuff for other brands of 48 Dauntless and Avenger's. If you really want to use AM, you don't HAVE to get stuff specific for that kit. It can be a bit more awkward and need some extra surgery, but it can be done.

I've seen the stuff for other brands too, but I don't have all that much experience with AM stuff, so I'm not sure how good of a job I'd do making all those modifications...but I guess I won't know unless I try

I would probably get some experience with AM made for the kit your doing before you try your hand at that, at least get some experience with using PE and resin. The problems with using AM that's not designed for the kit your doing are that the kit numbers will be different, so when the AM set tell you to leave out of trim kit part X or Y, it will have a different number on the kit your doing, and the par itself may even be different. For example, it could be one part on the kit your doing, but 2 on the kits the AM is meant for.

Also, the size could be slightly different. I used an Eduard PE set designed for an Italeri MiG 23 on a Hase kit. It was soon clear that the Italeri pit was bigger than the one I was doing.

I've used resin once on an A-10 and this GB is going to be my first attempt at using PE.  I'll be heading to a couple of model shows in the next couple of months so hopefully I'll be able to find something there.  If not, I have PLENTY of other kits to keep me occupied, especially as I look at some of the other GBs going on.  But I had to promise myself not to sign up for too many at once and limit to one build at a time.

Nathan, the answer to your question is apparently, YES!  This afternoon they have shows on Pompeii and Atlantis.  What either one of those topics has to do with "American Heroes", I have no idea.

To make my post a little more on topic Stick out tongue...

Bish please add my 1:72 Academy to the official list. I probably won't be starting it for a few months, but I can't see having any trouble finishing it by the end of the year.

Bish and I were kicking this around in a PM together a couple of days ago and we decided that this could be better posted here so here goes. From what Bish and I DO know is that the interiors of these birds was a standardized RLM 02 until November of 1941 and then it went to RLM 66. What we do not know is the color details of the cockpits. What I'm going to have to do as of right now using the info that I have is to guess and piece together the collection of color cockpit pics that I do have from other Luftwaffe aircraft.

My question is: Does anybody have any color reference material for the cockpits of the Ju-87? I have some color photos of the D series but its limited to just a few and they all leave alot to guessing when it comes to the finer details.  I will post them here as a contribution to anybody here that will be able to use them.

Not by a long shot. Have you ever posted progress pics in the wrong GB. Have you ever posted them in a GB your not even in. Embarrassed

In regards to the cockpit interiors, I do have the page on Swannies models site on German aircraft interiors. I think one of the main questions is the colour of the Instrument Panels. With late war aircraft, I think most of us paint those RLM 66.  From what the article say's, in early war RLM 02 pit's the panels were grey not grey green. It then goes onto say that when the switch was made to 66 the panels stayed the same grey.

So what I am confused about is if this grey is a third colour or is it 66 all the way through. RLM 66 is usually referred to as Black Grey and this applies to the article on Swannies site as well.

Mustang- You are generally correct about 66 appearing in basically every German cockpit by Nov. '41. However, that is just a generalization. Junkers Aircraft were found to have rlm 66 cockpits as early as 1940. The proof is in the Ju88 A-1 that was brought up from a lake in Norway. (the one Revell used for ref. when they made the 1/32 Ju88).That cockpit was 100% 66. Also, Messerschmitt 110 Cs were found with all 66 cockpits as well during the Battle of Britain. It is very safe to assume that many "B" model Stukas had a cockpit painted in 66, not 02. Also, keep in mind, that the aircraft that did have a cockpit painted in 02, still had RLM 66 colored instrument panels and radio panels/circuit breaker panels. Just keep this info in mind as you study cockpit photos.

What are your opinions on RLM66 and paints? MM, Tamiya, and pollyscales (that I have used) are a bit too dark, almost a black. I think the real birds would have been slightly lighter, but maybe that would be wear or element induced? It's been a lingering question of mine for a while.

I'm planning on 66 for my Stuka pit.

Nathan, thanks for that info, looks like swannies article might be a bit off. I was thinking the IP's should be RLM 66 throughout, the pics I have seen, though mainly B&W, do show a darker colour, but I was confused by the use of the term Grey rather than Black grey. Do you know if this earlier use of the 66 was in any way standardized, or could it have been a case of not having 02 to hand, and seeing as the IP's in 66, the rest was painted in that as well.

pilot, I use Xtracolour and that is very dark as well. The official term was black grey and the xtracolour does match the colour cards I have.

Bish, unfortunately I know of no standardization, except for the fact already mentioned that 66 appeared in basically every cockpit after '41.

Thanks for the input there Nathan. What's interesting about all the pics that I do have is that none of them have the detail/ components shown for the R/H side of the pilots area right around the upper arm/ shoulder area where the base of the glass is for the cockpit as well as the L/H front corner of the cockpit where the IP is. Also missing are the areas in the RH  rear area of the cockpit at the gunners area. I should be able to have the pics that I do have posted by Friday so you can see what I'm saying. I have around 7 or 8 pics and although there is alot of detail displayed, there are also gaps in the photo coverage as well.

Nathan, it does sound like a case of using what paint was to hand. This is one of the problems with this sort of thing. We have a record of various regulations saying this or that, but regulations are one thing, what happened out in the world is another.

Joe, do you mean you have no photo's for those areas, or you have photo's but what should be there is missing.

Here's some cockpit photos of various luftwaffe aircraft to see just what 66 can look like:

Here's what I think is a B model Stuka in North Africa. Notice the lighter colored 02 firewall, and what looks to be a darker cockpit and headrest??:
