I decided on the Hasegawa Ju87G Kanonvogel. I'm not a rivet counter, by any means, but it appears the other 1/32 Stukas out there just have too many issues. The other Hassies are quite difficult to find.

Keeping in theme, I found a Montex set with the Kette 6 emblem (III/St.G2) in it. However, I am not planning to do a traditional Rudel bird. Too many out there.

After a long search online, I could not find very many "unique" schemes on the G, so I'll be using some artistic license to replicate a bird lost on the eastern front. No records or photos survive. Most probably a Winter Scheme, heavily weathered front line bird.. Very much looking forward to this build!

O, you can't have to many of Rudel's aircraft pilot Big Smile I have 6 kits I plan on doing in his markings, but not for this GB.

I have added your build, will be nice to see how you and SS get on with this kit.

Panzerpilot: I'm building the same kit and I'm very tempted to go with winter camo as well...

Great, SS! Will be nice to have someone going along with the same kit and perhaps similar scheme. It will be my first winter bird.

Bish, I may take my Rudel kit remark back, as I came across a Tamiya 1/48 Stuka in my stash today. Perhaps for an encore once I get the first one done.

lol, see, you can't resist. If my plan for my own model shed comes along this year, I may well be building my 6 Rudel birds next year, its a project that's been 20 years in the making, so about time I got round to it.

Feel free to add another if you think you can fit it in.

I'm in, Italeri 1/72 in Battle of Britain era markings.  My Spit's and Hurri's need something else to shoot at.

@Bish. As I'm sure you know, don't forget Rudel also flew a Fw190D-9 towards the end. It has an interesting scheme. I don't think he flew it much, but he wasn't just a Stuka man. There are some interesting schemes in the earlier stuka models of his as well. It would be nice if Hasegawa came out with a 1/32 B to reflect 1940-41. I know they have had a D, which is out of production. Findable, but at premium cost. I'm just stuck in 1/32 for now! Cheers.

Their D is almost as hard to find as their G. Hannnants has the D in stock but it costs 90€. I got my D for 50€ or something similar on evilbay (coming from Japan). I couldn't find a single shop selling it...

Thanks SS. It is tempting to get a D.

G's are pretty readily available here in the states, as well as AM. I even found some metal barrels.

Ye, I have the 32nd Hase kit of Rudels 190D-9 and the 72nd Academy kit with AM markings for the same aircraft. He was credited with 9 aerial kills flying the 190.

I am with you on the 87B, it would ne nice if Hase did one, the issue with the Trump kit has really put me off that. The Hase D on Hannants is pricey, but there is one on E-bay from China that's only £48, its been on there for a while.

I can only imagine what a Trumpeter Stuka must be like. The parts count has to be well over 500!!! lol

Does anyone know if the aftermarket resin cockpit set for the 72nd academy kit will work with the fujimi kit?

John, I don't know for certain, but I don't see why not. But first chance I get, possibly tomorrow, I will dig out my Academy G-2 and Fujimi D-5 and see how they match up for size. As long as they are the same length and width, it should work.

I have actually ben thinking about getting that resin set for my Fujimi kits myself, I have used it once on the Academy G-1 and have one for the G-2 and its really nice.

John, I wasn't able to dig those kits out yesterday. But I will defiantly get to it on Sat, I was able to get some things done I was meant to do then, so I will have plenty of spare time this weekend.

Joe, ye, its defiantly lining up to be a good one. A good bunch on board here.

My Stuka came in the mail. It's a big'un alright. On par with the 1/32 Jug. Looks like the cockpit is gonna eat up a lot of time. Here's a little video of me and a friend this past Sunday on the way to a fly-in for burgers and beer. That  cannon must've used HE rounds to make geysers like that. Yeeesh.

Yeah, she's one big bird for sure! Thanks for posting that awesome video!

I decided against a winter scheme BTW. I'll just go with the standard splinter camo.

Awesome video pilot, thanks for sharing that. That kit is certainly large isn't it. that's the only reason I ain't building it, just got no room to display it at the minute.

Wow, based on the sound and trajectory I would've thought those were early rockets rather than cannons.

Seeing how often Rudel's name pops up here, I wonder if he could be worked into the badge somehow?

Those gun were 37mm Flak cannon, Flak 18's to be precise. So I guess they had a very high muzzle velocity. I think the most common ammo was armour piecing, there main role was to take out Soviet tanks, but those do look like HE rounds judging by the explosions.

I had considered adding Rudel into the badge, there is no one who says Stuka more than him, especially the G model, as he helped to develop it and perfect the tactics. But I didn't want to make the GB all about him and he is a bit of a controversial figure given his politics. As anyone who has read some of my posts may have figured, I am a great admirer of his, but i know others might feel very differently.

One thing I like about the Hasegawa kit is that it includes patterns, to scale, for the splinter camo.

Thanks, Bish. I found some interesting info about the cannon. It looks to be very similar to the Flak 18 development, M42U, which was used on type VII and IX Uboats. The "shell weight" was around 1400 pounds, which I assume excluded the barrel and made up the action? At any rate, it was a heavy weapon. Gas operated and 2500-2700fps (770-820mps) muzzle velocity.

Good point, Bish. I often get so caught up in the minutia of the war that I lose sight of the big picture.

Bish,

I'm seriously considering joining this group build, but I really need to finish up a couple of other things before I commit to another GB.

However, I do have a question about a model, and since this is a group of Stuka enthusiasts, I figure this is the place to ask.

I have the Hobby Craft JU-87G Stuka in 1:48 scale (supposedly) and have been searching for information on what the model is like to build.   Does anyone have some information on the model's defects?  I've been unable to find anything, or any build logs for the bird online.  Apparently, it's a terrible model, and just from my own measuring, I think it is not 1:48 scale.  It seems a little short in length.  This doesn't mean it isn't accurate for its size, but I'm curious about what makes this one so bad?

Thanks!

Gary

Gary, I found the kit on scale mates. It doesn't mention any reviews. But it does show that the original boxing in 93 was Rudel's G-2 and then was reboxed as a G-1 but doesn't mention new parts only new decals. Not sure which one you are considering, but the box art doesn't inspire confidence.

But, at the bottom, it say's Echo139er added this kit to his completed kits, and he is a member of the forum. But he doesn't come on much any more, but he did post 17 day's ago, maybe drop him a PM.

This is the scale mates page.
