I just had to look up Yellow jackets. Ouch, sounds like your much safer staying in the hobby room.

Those little bastards can be nasty, even without the allergies! When I was attacked a couple of years ago, it was very painful! I had a swelling the size of a hen's egg on my arm and the bite on my thigh actually left a scar! I think I had some sort of a reaction to the venom as I actually had a bit of a fever afterwards. I was at Walmart at one in the morning buying a can of spray killer! I had decided those critters would never see another dawn!

Funny as I haven't seen a lot of them this year, but they do become more active and aggressive later into the summer.

Today was no fun as I ended up staying home from work, as I couldn't stray too far from the bathroom. The 'storm' seems to have subsided, and I am about to venture out to get me some soup or something, as I have the Old Mother Hubbard syndrome. The cupboards seem to be bare.

I couldn't even work in the hobby room as all I seemed to do was sleep all day. The worst part of sick has to be the boredom sometimes.

Wow, Ken!  My place is getting overrun by the yellow (jacket) hordes as well!  My wife found three large nests while moving some of her flowers around the garden.  Luckily, she's not allergic to bee stings; she got stung about 7 times total......Hope you are feeling better and close to putting the bastards to the torch!!

Wow Dave! Even if she isn't allergic that had to be painful! Yes the doctor said they have noticed an increase in stings lately.

Ouch Ken, that blows! Well, all I know to do is stalk them back to their hole and then dump a little gasoline/petrol into it and poison the little bas- um critters.

That is exactly the plan Cliff! Used that method before!

Hi Everyone,

I think I told you all about my experience last year when I got stung by the "Bald Face Hornet".  Well I can't believe it, but yesterday while I was mowing the yard I got attacked by a nest of Yellow Jackets!  I ended up only getting two stings out of it.  But since it happened here at my house, my wife simply drove me to the urgent care center that is literally just around the block.  A couple of shots in my butt and I was able to come back home.  Of course I was done for the day, dealing with the swelling and pain.  I have still to find the nest to kill the little bastards!

Ken

Wow, sorry to hear about the wasp stings, Ken! That's a nasty situation when you're allergic to them. Hope you get over the discomfort soon!

Wow Ken! I hope you still keep that Epipen handy! Be careful when you engage them in battle, and be victorious!

Just had an awful interruption! Heard all this racket from the roof and discovered the pulley had come loose from the fan on my cooler! If there is one thing I hate more than climbing up on the roof, is climbing up on the roof in the dark!

On top of all that, I have been feeling sick all day at work, and since I got home have spent way much time in just one small room here. I nearly didn't make it down in time from the roof for another episode!

I really think tomorrow may be a sick day. They already know I was not feeling good, and I'm overdue.

Oops! Gotta go!Dead

Jim

Thank you Jim for the well wishes!

I hope you start feeling better soon!

I didn't have any time to search for the nest yesterday as I had to mow my Mom's yard.  Maybe this evening I can do a "Search & Destroy" mission!

Hey Jim, glad to see a pic of the build. In spite of your lack of time to give it, she seems to be looking pretty darn good! Any one of us here would be proud of it I'm sure. I know I would! Bad news about the yellow jacket attack Ken. I'm still trying to figure out what function they and wasps serve on this earth. Other than to annoy us. Spider food maybe? I agree with you on destroying the nest. They may have started this war, but you can sure finish it...... .and them! Take 'em out of action permanently buddy!

Hey all!

Still no word from the bank regarding my $200! They said it could be 10 days, and I assume that means business days. They are quick to take it out, but seem to be in no hurry to resolve an issue like this.

Why is the US behind on this? Hard to say, but I understand that they lag behind on a great many things. I hear it causes a lot of trouble for those traveling abroad.

Sorry I haven't kept up much on the Voodoo work, though I have been working here and there on it. It is actually getting very close to done!

Not a lot to finish other than the tail, nose, canopy and weapons load. Work has been pretty hectic at times, and even on weekends I either have so much to do, or I'm just not up to it. Too tired or just feeling low....

Jim

Jim, your Voodoo is looking outstanding!  I still have to remind myself that you are working in 1/72 scale!  Fantastic detailing!

I hope your job starts letting up on the hours for you.  You can only take that for so long.

That really sucks about your money.  I hope they get it back to you soon.

Thanks for the kind words on my Elefant Bish. I'm very happy with it overall. One thing I debated was painting the driver's hatch the same color as the outside of the tank but had done some research indicating some were painted with the same ivory color as the interior. At least it looked that way in B/W photos. Anyway, to my eye it added a little breakup and decided to paint it that way. As far as my JU-87 for your GB it is finished and will post a pic or two soon. I'm in the process of moving out of state for my job and that's more than likely going to affect my building. If I'm not active for a while, everyone will know why. I'm guessing it won't be till September though.

Hey Mike, I truly understand how moving will affect your building!  Personally, I hate moving!  Please do check in with us whenever you get the chance, you know you don't have to be building anything to post something here!

dave, ye, you got that right.

Mikey, most of what I have read says that any hatch that opens to the outside should have the inside surface painted the same as the exterior colour. But the ivory is a nice touch. Look forward to seeing that completed Stuka.

Jim, sounds like you had a hell of a day there. I can't believe you guys don't have chip and pin. But even then its not totally safe. The crooks just find new ways. One method here is to put a device into the slot you put your card in, often on ATM machines. And they put a small camera above the keypad to catch your pin. They have even done it on petrol pumps when you can pay at the pump. That's just one way to do it. The main rule is to always cover your pin and when your using it in a shop, the teller should not move the device out of your site, in many places, they won't even touch your card. So Chip and Pin isn't a complete safe guard. But it is very convenient.

But our banks are good. If there is anything on our accounts that we claim is a fraud, they give us our money back straight away and then investigate. The only drama is then waiting for the new card.

The US is behind on adopting the new chip and pin standard. Merchants are to install the new equipment by next year or they become liable for any fraud. As it is now, it is a simple matter to capture your card number and have it used. No one requires any form of ID or any credentials what so ever. One method that has been used is to visit Home Depot stores and go through the self check-out. Buy a power tool for example, and it is easily resold.

I know nothing is ever 100% safe, but it seems we sacrifice much for the convenience. I have heard of these new cards that have a transponder in it: you wave your card at it and it reads your info. I heard someone can walk by you with a transmitter of some kind that emits the correct signal to have your card give up its info. If you have one, you have to carry your card in a metal wallet.

Thieves work very hard to avoid having to work real jobs.

How do your self service check outs work if you don't have chip and pin. We have only had them since the introduction of chip and pin. Does seem strange that the US is so far behind on these. Its been that long now I can't even recall not having them. I think we have had them about 10 years. I am that used to it, I don't carry cash most of the time, which can be awkward when you are getting something small.

Not sure about cards with transponders, but contactless payments are becoming more common for small amounts, but I think they are done though mobile phones.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Thanks for the input on the airbrushes from jimbot and Gamera.  The airbrush I have is a Master brand that I purchased off of Amazon that came in a combination with a small compressor, it isn't bad; however, I would like to have more control over the pressure of the air.  So far, I have only been spraying Model Master acrylic and Testors enamels.  I haven't really had too many problems once I figured out the proper mixing ratios.  Clean-up isn't what I would call "difficult", its just time consuming to make sure that all the paint is removed and I don't screw up the needle.  I seem to be getting pretty decent coverage.

I posted earlier that I would be posting some pictures of my progress on my F-16 that I'm about done with now.  I have primed, reworked areas that needed it and applied the first batch of paint, I have a few areas that will need minor touch-up and I hope to have pics posted very soon.

This will be my first attempt at posting pictures so bear with me.

I want to thank everyone who has offered tips and suggestions, they are very much appreciated and if I don't get around right away to thanking everyone or if I miss anyone; just know I do appreciate them all!

This is a great group and I look forward to browsing the forums.  Hopefully the small 2 cents that I give every now and then can help someone, even if I'm not the most advance builder here.

Hey all, just finished a few hell weeks at the job and have been kind of AWOL. If misery loves company then I'm right there with you Jim. When will these people who require our expertise realize we have other priorities besides workStick out tongue  I did manage to do something constructive during the time as I built my Elefant that I've had in my stash for over a year. The only aspect of it that I wasn't too thrilled with were the faces of the crew and the lack of depth to the zimmerit. As those who know anything about me though, I'm not a perfectionist and am still happy with it. Thanks so much for the pics Ken; that Sabre was so cool. I've never seen one up close in years let alone seen one flying!

Hi Everyone,

Here are a few of the photos that I promised from the Dayton Air Show:

Awesome pics there. I hadn't realised there was a flying F-86 either. Nice. And some nice pics of the Blue Angels aircraft. A few years back I was working out of El Centro for a few weeks. Unfortunately it was the summer so the Angles were not on base, but the gate guard there is a nice collection of all the aircraft they have used over the years.

Nice pics of the Corsair as well.

Jelliot, I wouldn't put a whole lot of importance on the cost of the airbrush as much as I would the type. The minimum I would recommend would be anything that features an internal mix: you get a much finer spray than you would an external. Single action is fine, and double action can be a bit tricky to get used to.

I started out with Badger's 350 which is an external mix, then "upgraded" to an internal mix, double action airbrush. When I quote "upgrade", I paid 10 bucks (on sale) for Harbor Freight's offering. They have about doubled in price now, but I found it to be a good value. I have completed a half dozen kits with it, (not to mention stalled projects) and well, not to toot my own horn, you can see what I was able to do with it. As far as double action: I pretty much adjust the needle to get the spray I want and use it as a single action.

My biggest complaint with it is, the color cup sucks. I use a couple of Badger 350 cups with it as they work at a better angle and siphon the paint better. If anyone was to purchase one of Harbor Freight brushes, I would recommend fining a badger cup to go with it.

Jelliott: Sounds cool! I'm not sure you really need a super nice airbrush and compressor unless you're doing complex paint schemes like German and Japanese inkblots and mottling. On something you're going to spray one colour and then mask and spray the next any airbrush should work. And there's no reason you can't have more than one airbrush, I use old reliable for simple jobs and the new more expensive one for detail work.

Just a quick update on my WIP...  I have put the F-4G on hold for a little bit until I get some other things put in order (obtaining decals for the 190th FS out of Gowen Field here in Idaho).  Other than that I have also been working on a Hasegawa 1/48 F-16D.  I am in the painting stages right now and hope to be posting some photos this evening when I get home from work to show the progress.

As for the F-4G, I have received the Aries cockpit and have started getting the additional tools and supplies I need to work with that.  I purchased a cheap airbrush to practice with; its okay, but I'm wondering if I shouldn't have paid a little more for a better quality brush and bigger, adjustable compressor. As for the decals I'm looking for, I'm thinking I may just have to resurrect my old ink-jet printer and make my own decals.  It sounds tedious; however, I'm thinking that may be my only option.

I'll get those photos added tonight, hopefully.  It will be my first attempt at adding photos to the forum.
