Hey Theuns,

If the roll is still open, I'd like to join up with a Monogram F-100 and/or a Monogram F-101 in 1/48th scale....What do you think??

TAD

2022 New Year's Resolution:  Enter 1 group build and COMPLETE a build this year!!  Why Photobucket did you rob me of my one Group Build Badge???  Must be part of the strong anti-Monogram cartel!!!

That paint is plain old Tamiya aluminum. From a rattle can. It looks very nice. I was going to use my airbrush but I've had great luck painting phasers with the tamiya I figured I'd give it a try.

I'm very happy with the results, no buffing required. I have used the model masters buffing metalizer in the past with good results.

Mach..that's gonna be friggin' awesome in NM!! That is my fav era of jet fighters..the NM era. Love em and have lots' in my collection. I have yet to try metalizers, but, will someday, but, prob on a larger scale 1/32 bird, probably a 104.

Theuns..welcome back and thanks. Somewhat happy with my Thud, but, next time I try Vietnam era paint, I will try to get my colours mixed to better hues. I ended up with more of a NATO tri-colour. Anyway, it was fun and now I'm simplifying a paintjob on that uni-coloured 102.

I got a few coats of aluminum on before the rain came.

I'm going to let the paint cure, then mask and paint the black stripe.

Hey Steve, I apologize for the late reply mate, You are welcome and updated on the front page:-)

Rob that is a good looking 105 there! Almost makes me want to start my 1/48 Thud!  (But I need to be diciplined and complete the other first!! LOL)

I have basically reached the stage on my 104 's fuselage where all is buttoned up and close to being ready for paint.

I am still in tw minds if I will complete the painting of all components and then assemble, or assemble and try to mask off wings ect for painting......

I'm calling this Thud Done!! I had a good time with this Trumpeter kit. Some things that I observed. The overall molding of the kit was excellent, except, the missiles. For some reason, the missiles needed a lot of clean up as there was residual plastic and flash. I know my brown is not right. I was hoping to soften up the value of the brown with post shading, but, I defeated my effort with the oil washes. It brought the brown down too much and I find it's way too dark for the period. I chose to pose the rear engine air brakes open, simply because, they were too friggin' cool not to!! Very unusual configuration and I wanted to show that neat feature. All landing gear doors were too thick. I really don't know how guys thin out such things, but, I imagine a rotary tool? I left them be. I hope my pics does it justice. I am overall pleased with its outcome.

Republic F-105G Thunderchief Wild Weasel, 516th TFS, 388th TFW

So, that's her. Switching gears and getting back on the F-102. It's been a challenge so far as I'm not used to using enamels so I am giving it a lot of time to dry. Stay tuned!!

B1, Thats a beautiful 106! Great job.

You and Rob have me rethinking the NASA markings on my 102. That huge U.S. AIR FORCE

sure does look nice!

I got a coat of Tamiya aluminum on the Dagger today. Does anyone have any info on the 102's that

the astronauts flew in project Mercury? I'm going on the assumption that it is the aluminum with the black

stripe down the side with the meatball on the side.

B1..awesome!! I'm a big fan of the HUGE USAF markings on these classic planes. I've decided to go that route as well with my 102.

That Thud is awesome looking ! Here is where I am with the 106 so far:

Got the majority of decals in place. Just the undersides need assembling and fuel tanks added.

Tons of progress:

Wing hard-points, antennas et.al., engine air brakes, landing gear, drop tanks. Shrikes on deck, waiting for paint to set.

Sorry. Is it too late to join up?

Theuns,

I it too late to join up. I'll build a 1/48 F100, my favorite jet. I just don't know if it will be Monogram or what yet.

Alan, I'm very sorry to hear about your wife. She will be in my prayers. I completely understand how your building can be therapeutic.

Your VooDoo is looking very nice so far. You use of talc and superglue is interesting. I've been using

baking soda and superglue for years with very good results. I always thought it was a chemical reaction between the baking soda and CA, but I guess its just any fine powder as a filler.

I think I've got the 102 ready for priming. I'll have some more photos soon.

Kitty Hawk 1:48 F-101 Voodoo

I love the progress here.  These are classic jets.  I'm amazed at how big they are.

I've made a bit more progress, but the going is slow. Last week my wife was diagnosed with oral cancer, a big surprise since she is not in any risk group (non-smoker, non-drinker). It's taking a toll on us, but I find building somewhat therapeutic. So bear with me everyone, we find out Wednesday what treatment course she will be on.

The main body seams have had a coat of putty. For a modern kit, the fit is terrible in some areas and amazingly good in others.  A real mixed bag.

The wings are also ready to put on.

Here is what it looks like after the wings have been placed.  There were some deep gaps in some areas.  Instead of putty I decided to use a 1:1 mixture of talc powder and medium super glue so it can be applied easier than putty. The talc makes it much easier to sand. You can see the mold stress marks all over the body and wings. I'm hoping a coat of primer will hide them.

I'm getting there.  I need to assemble the rudder, stabilizers and front nose and then it will be ready for some primer.  From there, I will decide how to paint it.

That's it for now.

Thanks Alan, glad you like my Voodoo. Your has some issues but you are doing a great job. Incredible how dimpled those brake doors are. It's going to take some filler to smooth out the surface and they should look fine.

Rob

Great work on the pits!

Thanks Rob.  After a bunch of putty and sanding, I think they came out ok but I won't know until it's primed.

Hey Mach..the oil wash is just artist oil paint thinned to a fine consistency using odourless turpentine. As for the 102..they went from NM to Aircraft Grey to tri-colour Nam cam. I'm going with the grey. I want  the massive "US AIR FORCE" markings.

Wow, your moving right along. They look great!

I've never done an oil wash like that before, I'll have to look into

how to do it. It looks great!

Are you leaving the 102 grey? I thought they were painted in

aluminum paint?
