2015 Messerschmitt Bf 109 Group Build

Man that would be cool to open that panel. I opened one up on a build I did about 9 years ago and scratch built some radios and ran elevator/ rudder control cables so you could see them through the opening.

While not the best build in the world, it did add to the detail of the finished model. Just don't forget the backing plate with the twist lock holes for the panel.

Now ya got me thinking.

It looks a little dark for RLM 02, but I'm not an expert like most of the guys on this build.

Craig, having seen Steve's post, he is right. 02 is a light grey colour. If you have Tamiya paints, XF-22 is not a bad match.

It could be my poor photo, but the Testors MM RLM 02 (2071) that I have does look a shade lighter.  Also, the Testor paint doesn't have as much of that OD tint to it.  I'd hate to repaint.  I really like the way the Vallejo goes on.

 I plan on submitting two for the group build- 1/32 Hasegawa Bf-109G-6 and the 1/72 Hasegawa Bf-109G-6.

OK guys.  I re-shot the cockpit parts with Testors MM RLM 02 enamel.  It's definitely a touch lighter.  It sprayed well, but I really hate the smell of enamels.  I used the flash on the bottom photo.

RLM 02 is described as a grey with some green in it.  This same colour was also used on the exterior as the lighter shade for the two tone camouflage of 1940, so going straight grey won't be correct either.  

I found this colour swatch, which I think is fairly accurate:

I haven't come across any negative reviews for Vallejo's shade, though one modeller did make the comment that:

t's the wierdest colour; looks grey when viewed next to green, green next to gray and brown in the bottle.

I've also read  there was more than one company producing paints for the Luftwaffe, so there would be some variance.   It's possible the bottle of Vallejo you have is a victim of the above occurrence, in that the colour is a bit off?   You can also try taking the eyedropper off the top so you an get a stir stick in there just in case shaking wasn't enough.

Thanks Jack.  The MM 02 I used to re-spray looks a lot like the swatch you posted.  Now the 66 that I used from Vallejo is a good bit darker than the swatch.  I don't know, maybe I'm just splitting hairs here.  Both paints went on nice.  I just like using acrylics.

Craig, no problem.  Some other things to consider is how dense you sprayed them on, and what if any, primer colour was underneath.   Acrylics do dry fast to the touch, but they might still be curing till the following day, and end up looking lighter?

flyerduke: This has EVERYTHING to do with how the color shade turns out. I usually go with a darker color primer on my lighter final coats. I can always lighten it up with additional passes until I feel it's going to be the shade I want.

Bit of a long winded post tonight.

Some progress was made.

I opened up the access panel for the fuselage. I cut out a new door from soda can aluminum and then used a drill and sharp blade to cut out the hole. Clean up was quick and then I fabricated a backing plate.











Today some detailing for the fuel ports occurred. Spouts were fabricated and made so that I could attach lines later. They may not be 100% accurate but they do work for what I want.






It was a good day I think.

Nice start-ups here!

I am diverting to my alternate in order to get going this weekend, pending approval from Stang and SS. My second planned build will now be my first, due to an AM snafu for the G-10 (which I now plan for a later date). I am going with the 1/32 Dragon Wing Tech E-4. A BoB bird. I've heard this kit is well done and look forward to it. The scheme will be a battle weary "Achtung Anfanger", 'black 6' yellow nose...complete with a bomb. This, from JG51.

Bring it Tom! Lookin' forward to it!

Hasegawa 1:32 Bf 109 G-6 (Eric Hartmann)

Airfix 1:72 Bf 109 E-4 (Franz von Werra)

Hobbycraft Bf 109 D (AM early war scheme)

I look forward to making a start, and will hopefully work through these four during the year.

But I need to control my overall number of builds for the year, and have three from last year to finish even after the two that will be done this weekend that are part of last year's tally... I have them stacked up ready to go, I'll get a shot of the 2015 roster (not counting three or four that are not here yet...)

I will begin with something quick and easy, ITALERI's Bf-109 F-4 in 1/72.

Nice selection Mike, that's quite a handful for one GB. Look forward to the 32nd G-6. I have that kit and was considering it, but wanted to go for an easier scheme.

Nice to see all the WIP's so early into the GB.  Had a feeling this one would start off like gangbusters.

Been able to make some headway on the 'pit.  Going with the kit offering and using the Aires set as a guide, this is where it stands thus far.  The most time consuming step was removing all the molded in seatbelt detail.  Was able to snag the resin rudder pedal supports from the Aires kit.  I'll most likely be using the Aires breech cover as well.  Both IP's look nice, so I'll probably build 'em both and then decide which one to go with.

Joe, that's what I love about 1/32, especially for WWII stuff.  Let's one really go hog wild on the details.  As an example, here's a comparison between the 109 and a 1/32 WWI Roland......
