Thanks Jay.  I thought about it all day at work.  I thought the 601 was a turbocharger.  I'll strip the rust color and paint it like the rest of the engine.

Very useful reference pictures in that link mustang1989, only just noticed there are 2 Bf''s in the link with a difference in how the engines have been restored.

Thanks Johan! We all gotta take the good with the bad on restorations and combine 'em with the few original color photos that are still floating around to make it all work. Even museums get it wrong sometimes.

Happy New 2015 everyone.

Already so much inspiring work being posted and discussions going on, XLNT start for 2015 ;)

I am still struggling with completing a T90 and a Stuka, wanted to get those of my chest b4 kicking of the Bf109 builds but now the carpet monster is playing tricks with me and I lost the Stuka radio and the engine covers for the T90 - I guess there is a message in there and it is time to move on :)

Very useful reference pictures in that link mustang1989, only just noticed there are 2 Bf''s in the link with a difference in how the engines have been restored.

Very Best Regards

Johan

LOL ... I usually end up blending paints until I get the shade I'm after anyhow.

You sure can't go wrong there! RLM is sometimes in the eye of the beholder anyway. I plan on trying the Tamiya alchemy mix-up approach someday. The stuff does spray very well. I'm gonna use Gunze on my current build though.

I may also check the local Hobby Lobby's and see what they have.

Careful with that one Jeremy! At 3.99 a bottle that gets expensive quick. I use alot of MM acryl stuff myself and so far I don't have many complaints until I start getting into the RLM 82/83 colors.

I did some research, uh hair splitting, on MM RLMs recently. At least with MM enamels, the 82/83 colors are reversed. Apparently quite a few other manufacturers got this wrong too.

Hi Craig, You are going to want to paint that part black as well. It's the intake manifold. It connects to the outlet of the supercharger.

Thanks Nathan.  And thanks for correcting my part nomenclature.  Sure would like to find a photo of it.

I decided to work on the engine while I wait for the PE interior set to arrive.  I completed assembly of the engine which went together nicely.  Just a bit of filler here and there.  I've looked at a bunch of photos online and can't seem to find any of the bottom of the engine.  I decided to shoot the exhaust manifold a dark rust color.  I added a few drops of MM gun metal to some MM rust.  I'm not sure what it's supposed to be, but I figured what the hell.  If someone knows the true color, please let me know.

I will probably shoot the engine RLM 66.  A dark wash should darken it up.  If that don't work, I'll lightly hit it with flat black.  We'll see.  I'll post pics once I get going on it.

Craig

Hey Craig, that engine's a beauty. The block itself should be a semi-gloss black. The part you just painted is piping for the coolant system. Not sure what color they normally are. I don't have any pics of the engine bottoms either. I'll look to make sure and post them here if I do.

Dang Craig! My Buffies Best 109G-10 CD used to work real well in this computer and I had a TON of Daimler Benz pictures of the bottom of the engine. Doug is the first person I can think of right off hand that would have pics as well as Tucohoward (Jay).

Jelliott... My 2 cents... Model Master Acrylics first BUUUUT... Just cant beat Tamiya paints , the problem with them is you either have to "Blend" your own or use the close match. Altarail as was mentioned has a lot of cool stuff and another good source is Hobbylinc.com. Fair prices and fast shipping. I'm lucky to have a Hobby Town near with a Hobby Lobby right across the street from them.

Luck...

Doug

Doug, thanks!  I actually just got off of the Hobbylinc website.  That is one of the main areas I buy my stuff online.  They are currently running special on the MM paints and you can pick them up for about $2.79 for 1/2 oz.  I am pretty sure that is what I am going to do, seems to be the best price I've found so far.  I may also check the local Hobby Lobby's and see what they have.

Those look real tom, did you put a 109 seat into a miniaturization beam?

No. Just my trusty optivisor, but I wonder if Micromark sells something like that? Hmmm, I sure could have used it!
Thanks for the compliments guys.

Hey all! Sign me up with a Hasegawa 1/48 Bf 109 E-4 I'll be dressing up in a Walter Oesau BoB flavor. This will be (hopefully) my first completed airplane and my second completed model ever. Can't wait to get started.

I was getting them online, however Hobby Town has really stocked up, or did before Christmas, and they are just 5 mi from me, so I've been going there lately. Sometimes Hobby Lobby. They really surprise me withe their selection.

If online I go with eBay. There's a store called altarail that seems to have the MM RLM colors I need. Not bad shipping price or speed either.

Thanks Steve and TB379!!  I've been leaning towards the MM line, since they are probably a little easier to get locally.

Steve, do you get yours from an online source or do you pick them up locally?

I use MM Axcrul RLM shades BUUUUT -- they are different from their enamels. the enamels I feel were very accurate but the Acryls leave something to be desired on a number of occasions. I have taken to mixing RLM 74, 75, 78 and 79 from Tamiya acrylics, and others as need be (MM Acryls are hard to get in Australia). 74 and 75 are notably wrong in the MM range.

Okay, quick question on RLM colors and what is considered "best."  I know there is no perfect solution for this question, and I realize everyone has their favorites.  I was just checking because I've seen RLM colors from MM, Vallejo, Humbrol and AK Interactive.  I'm trying to decide which way to go.  Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.
