2015 Messerschmitt Bf 109 Group Build

Have been plugging away at this so here are a few progress pictures.....

Got all the decals on and a combination of Flory and oil washes that still have to be tuned up here and there.

The next one I build will be different when it comes to the stacks. You have to either modify the stacks so they can be added after painting or do a lot of masking if done the Revell way. Masked the area and shot MM Burnt Iron Metalizer at 6 psi.

Had some silvering under the wing crosses so no biggie there. Just used some post it notes to mask the crosses and shot some colors.

Got the tires assembled and painted. The tail gear broke off so it got pinned and now it actually swivels. I also flattened the tail wheel just a tad.

Did my home brew of oil and turp wash for the wells.

Did some streaks with oils for fluid stains. Letting things cure a bit then some Testors Flat Lacquer will be sprayed to kill the gloss. Some final assemblies and this G-6 will be done.  

Fine work, PJ! Very, very nice. I really like the wheels. Great job on the mottling too! Looking forward to seeing it all done!

I love using the Flory Washes. Simply outstanding! Great for bringing out recessed details and griming up certain areas. Easy to remove and control. They do stick well to flat paint so heads up on that.

For the fluid streaks I used burnt umber oil paint straight from the tube. The wheel well washes was a combination of burnt umber with a touch black to darken it just a tad.  

Another short update.I got the decalson the otehr day. After i finished those, i realise dthat i really should have done some fading with the airbrush. This is the first time i have done a desert aircraft since i started serious weatheirng and in 72nd scale i would have done this with dry brushing. But with this larger scale, the fading would have been better with the air brush. So one lesson i have lkearmnt is to treat 32nd aircraft similar to 35th armour rather than smaller scale aircraft. I had also starte dthe exhaust staining when i took these.

And then some weathering. I was originally going to go for the lighter touch. But i found some info that this aircrfat was older than i had thought. Apparently it had crashed earlier in the year and then repaired before Marseille got hold of her.

For the weathering i used Flory Wash dark dirt top and bottom and then dry brushed the top.

One point on the Flory Wash. You can see that the bottom is cleane rthan the top.Despite the top getting a future coat is was less glss than the top. The flory wash sticks more to the flatter finish but just slids off the gloss. It can be removed from the flat finsih, but it does take some work, but its really hard to keep in on the gloss. So if you wnat a clener finish with it just in the panel lines,its best applied to glss. If you want a more grubby look, use it on a flat surface.

I'll do a little more to the underside once the flat clear coat is applied, hopefuly tomorrow.

And that all for now. Once i get the flat on, i can then add the clear window parts,which should be fun.

Looking good Bish. The paint and washes look really good. You can still do the fading. Spray clear flat acrylic and when dry, do a filter of turp and yellow ochre oil paint. That's how I did it to my Ju87B Desert Snake for the Stuka GB. Just go light on the wash mix cuz yellow ochre is very strong.

Will comment on this more in depth when I get home. Time is short at work today.

There is so much fantastic work going on here. Plastic Junkie and Bish, great, great job.

Everyone else is doing amaing work, too. In fact, you all inspired me to get back to my Bf-109 E7 Trop kit from Eduard that has been sitting around in my stash for a bit.

I decided to do this one with the front end opened up. I have the weekend edition kit, but bought the PE set for it, so it's closer to a Profipack.

Anyway, here is the cockpit before final assembly.

And here is the engine, firewall and cockpit installed in the fuselage.

I'm looking forward to gettingthis one painted up and weathered. I want to try out some new techniques on weathering, and this kit will be perfect for it, given the climate inwhich it served.

Here we go with another stunner in progress courtesy of BD! It's looking super!

I'm almost done with my G-6 and will be posting pictures soon.

Well, i guess its time to call this done. My first 32nd scale aircrfat is almost 30 years of building models.

After the last thread i tok PJ's suggestion and did a filter wash with Yellow Orche oil. I did add a small dropofwhite and did the wash very thin and the result was just what i wanted, so thanks again PJ.

On the underside i re-did the flory wash with dark dirt and then another with sand.

Next upwas fitting the clear parts to the canopy. As you can see, the clear acotate has a paper backing with the outline of each piece. the instructions say that once cut, they should be soaked in water toremove the paper, but it came off easily enough without.

I cut two piece out at a time to avoid mixing them up, dipped them in future and after 30 mins drying fitted them. Most fitted no problem, but the centre pieces, which should have been fitted before the inner frame, needed some trimmng.

Once all fitted, the canopy was fitted along with the antena wire and that was it.

I added some MiG and AK pigments to the wheels legs and around the wheel wells.

Then it was just adding it to the base, fitting the propand adding the figure and its done.

And here, along with my otehr build for this GB, the 1/18th DB 605.

And finally, i wanted to do a comparison. For those who may have only built in one scale, or only made a small change, here you can see what a big jump this is for me. Apart from a few 48th kits early on, i have been building 72nd aircraft ever since i started modelling. But now my sole 72nd 109, a hase G-6, has a big brother.

And tehre you are. Thanksall for the support and making this yet anotehr great GB. Thanks to all those who gave tips and advice.

And a huge thanks to Mustang for yet anotehr great GB and the excuse to build twokits that both challenged me and were a rel joy to build, as well as adding somthing new to the collection.

O, almost forgot.You will have to excuse the differant colours in the terrain. I added some fresh celluclay after the model was added so this is still wet. Once it dries it will all match.

Made the canopy cable and spring along with the radio antenna insulators

Wheels got some MMP earth powders

tail tire was flatenned a bit

Some chipping was added and MMP black powder was applied for the exhaust stains.

More fluid streaks here and there, or as Bob Ross used to say, there and here.

 Finally completed this great kit. Hope you like it. All comments welcome.

Forgot to add the pitot tube so now it's complete.

Just a short description about the plane and markings. This G-6 was flown by Hauptmann Karl Rammelt of II./JG 51 while based in Rumania in 1944. He flew 450 missions scoring 46 kills. He lived to the ripe old age of 94, passing away on May13, 2009.

Thanks buddy. Hey forgot to tell you  that Durham's Water Putty is great to create desert sand or regular terrain. I use that along with unscented crushed kitty litter for rocky areas or rubble. Don't know if you can get this product in your side of the pond.

 Bish: I have to say that your skills never fail. I'm sure it's a bit uncomfortable building out of your comfort zone of the 72nd scale realm but you've managed to pull them all off magnificantly. I'd like to extend some gratitude to you for participating in this GB bud. Your contributions are a welcome addition to it.

 Ernie: Wow!!! All weathering and paint are drop dead gorgeous and if there's a fault I can't find it. Let me know which picture you want to use for the front page and thanks a million for being a welcome part of this GB as well.

Brandon: It's great to see you back on your E-7 again. I just love looking at 109's all opened up. It's lookin' to be an awesome finish.

Bish, a very succesful forray into 1/32 scale. 

Love the subtle varions of colour, particularly topside.  A great overall presentation with the base and figure as well.  One question on  the dark streak on the bottom fuselage - I need some enlightment on what would cause that?

PJ, I have heard of that but have not been able to find it over here. But I think I came across something similar but did not pick any up, I will have to check it out again.

Joe, thanks buddy. It was not as bad as I thought and once I got going It just felt natural. But it certainly was nice to try something new.

Jack, thanks. And I will admit I took a risk with that. I did a search for streaking on 109's and found a few pics with the grime like that, but I think they were all models. I could not find any decent pics of the underside of 109 in service so after some thought I decided to risk it. It may well be totally wrong, and if so I will take that as a lesson learned.

That and I think I was getting a bit carried away with myself having such a big canvas to cover.
