Are you going to host the Japanese Group Build VI?

If so I have an entry if you run it.

The 1/350 Aoshima 1942 heavy cruiser Takao.

Dan: She's coming along great! And good idea on the cotton balls in masking, I'm going to have to remember that. 

Thanks Gamera: I'd say the hard part it playing the mask's on the canoply. But when you get on a roll is seems to get a little easier.

Tony: Infantryman turned out great. A job well done.

Masking the cockpit of the Kate posed a challenge, I came up with running Tamiya tape on the inside, sticky side facing out, used a toothpick to work it into. Then followed up with using about half of a cotton ball gently stuff inside, the cotton ball helps prevent the tape from coming lose and allowing paint to get in. And as a mask for the opening in the center.  To mask the hole in the nose I used a circle template and a sewing needle in a pin-vice.

Gee, that's some nice work there Tony. I'd swear he was bigger than 1/32nd! 

I'll see about getting you posted later this week. 

I've got some of the US, UK, and German Multipose figures but I'd heard the molds for the Japanese set were lost or destroyed so I'm not sure there was any reissue.

The box artwork looks to be original release, or was it more recent?  Might have to follow your lead, and pump out a 1/35 figure for this group build.

Here's the final shots of my AIrfix 1/32 Japanese Infantryman. Once again I've really enjoyed the Japanese GB, thanks for hosting it again Cliff. I'll still be around, of course.

X2  Even with pre-cut masks I have issues.

Dan: Nice work. Those canopies turned out great! Gee, I think I've said it before but I hate masking them. And even doing things the same way you did mine never turn out that well. 

Thanks Gamera: Maybe a styrene dal would be better, you can see the wood grain in the toothpick. A good coat of paint should cover that up.

Goldhammer: Always hate that when the paint bleeds. Looking forward to seeing those decals go on.

Work continues on the Kate. Three days ago I hand cut the canopy masks with tamiya tape, the front and rear parts that have a curve to them I used a circle template to cut the shapes out. They where dipped in future before hand, masking took about hour. The kit comes with both closed and open canopy. They where airbrushed tamiya XF-11 J.N. Green.

The fuselage and wings are glued, filled and sanded. Part fit was just about perfect, had to do some sanding where the rear of the wing meats the bottom of the fuselage. All that's left is making the cockpit opening and the Kate will be ready for primer.  The small three clear parts where masked before gluing on.

Hey GH, good to hear you found the decals you're looking for. No worries, post the photos whenever PH clears up.

I put this one on hold last year after my screwups with painting the crosses until I felt in the mood to deal with her.  A week or so ago I found a set of "surrender crosses" and have them coming.  As you see, my attempt at painting them was a disaster, and then the white peeled when unmasking.  Now ready to re-shoot the white, and go on from there.

Figures.....PB went down for me just as I was ready to put up pics.

Dan: Clever idea with the toothpicks, I'm going to have to remember that.

And really nice work there on the torpedo.

Thanks Gamera.  This Hasegawa kit is going together a lot better than the Eduard 1/48 Bf-110 kit.

I should have drilled out the antenna holes on the leading edge of the wing before I glued them together, tried to drill them out but couldn't keep a straight line. So I filled them in with CA glue and tooth picks. First time using toothpicks to close a circular hole, they work great.

After I applied some putty over the CA glue and sanded them down I glued the fuselage together.

Hello everybody, great work going on here. I've been working on my Hasegawa Nakajima B5N2 Type 97 Kate for a few weeks now but photobucket has not allowed me to upload. To start off this has just about been a dream build, no trouble of any kind, everything has fitted together great.  The wings went together flawless, only a little sanding and fill.

I may, if not finished, but with a second if it fell in the guidelines....a ME 262 in Japanese markings in green with a gray/white belly.  Kind of a what if the war dragged into '46.  I suspect Germany sent plans and specs to them along with the other aircraft they did send, just that there were no materials to build with.  Would play hob with the 29's if there were any decent pilots left.

 

Sounds cool! Actually the IJN did build a sorta copy of the 262 in the Nakajima Kikka. They got their hands on a German jet engine and some photos of the 262 but no blueprints. So they copied the engine and built the Kikka along simular lines though about 2/3rds the size.

The IJA was working on the Nakajima Ki-201 Karyu which again looked much like the 262 but was a bit larger. Not much is known about it so you could probably just build the 262 as one.

PS: Looks like the site won't let me post a direct link. The Kikka is under Navy aircraft and the Ki-201 under Army.

GH: Sounds good there too. If you can't get her done I'll be posting JGB VI sometime after Thanksgiving. You're welcome to join us for that.

I kind of gave up on the surrender Betty last year with paint issues (my fault) and put her on the back burner til I felt like dealing with it.  Just stumbled across a set of the green surrender crosses in scale.  Now I can get her finished up, hopefully by the end of the year.  Sand or strip off what I had done, spot in the paint and the rest will go fairly quick.

Enjoy your vacation Cliff. I'm just doing the officer at this time, I may do another later, but these ones are also good for conversions, so I want to save a few for those.

Hey Tony no problem and that's awesome. I picked up a couple sets of those a few years back but heard the Japanese molds had been lost or destroyed or something like that. Very cool to see you have a set and looking forward to watching you paint him.

So are you going to do the officer or the whole set?
