On a 'Japanese' note, scored a 1/350 IJN Yamato this weekend at the LHS at 30% off. I've always wanted one!

Is it the new tool kit?

Here is where you have to be willing to screw up the entire project. The first layer turned out darker than I wanted, I'm thinking because I used too much dye and the dirt turned dark as soon as it was wet. I did notice though that everything seems to be settling down to the bottom which is good, though I doubt the bottom will get any lighter.  This may take quite a bit of resin which is one reason I started out with a smaller base at first. I need to shop around and see if I can get a large can of the stuff at a discount.

The subsequent layers will be lighter, and I think the reflection makes it look darker than it is.

Gee Steve, that's interestingWink

I'd guess being too dark isn't unrealistic, but it sucks to obscure the detail you put in there.

Looking forward to seeing how things go, and crossing my fingers.

After taking a look at it this morning my hopes are higher. I can paint the area Zero and surounding area green again. If I do this right it will turn out better than originally planned. The dirt, which turned black, will give the texture I want.

I think the accidental look you got will look like silt and junk settling around the wreck which will look even more realistic IMO.

OK this is better. Now I just need to purchase a 32 oz. can of resin from Michael’s, with a 40% coupon of course, next week and add some more layers. Now that the seafloor is the color it’s going to stay, a nice calming blue should do.
Update next week.

MC I am loving the sunken treasure!! Looking forward to seeing it get deeper!

Thanks Rob! Beer Well the age of this kit reared it's ugly head when I started decaling. First time ever I've had shettering. Saved the rest of them with the liquid decal film I bought awhile back. They then layed down and held together beautifully! I then managed to lose my fuse Hinomarus, and had to paint them on which turned out good enough. Then removing the left mask it tore off the front bit of the black marking that overlaps the fuse band. Had to paint touch up that as well, then touched up the damaged top wing decals. Not perfect but it'll do. The stripes on the floats....well we won't go there, so going to paint them. I simply don't trust a decal that large to go around the compound curves and lay down over the detail smoothly. Anywhos here's some pics.

@Steve,

That zero is stunning! The color, to me, looks spot on! I really like how this is coming together!

@Simpilot34,

Despite your difficulties with the decals, it is turning extemely well! The upper wing looks and rear tail look fantastic. I'm looking forward to when this is complete!

No MC, it's the older one. It was such a good price, i couldn't resist. I'm going to spend the next year or so collecting AM parts to make it rock.

It’s still a nice kit Rob, and can be made into a great looking build, especially with some AM. It was this older kit that I make the Musashi Wreck out of. That’s a steal of a price.

I bought some more resin today and added another layer. Once this is dry I add another tomorrow.

Rob: Congrads! Somehow I missed your earlier post. Even the older kit sounds pretty darn cool. I'd love to pick up the Yamato myself but the way I'm going I'd never get around to her.

Some more on the Zeke. I added another 2 layers and added some fish over the starboard wing. I will be adding a few more layers and adding a few more fish.

Thanks PJ,

I don't know yet. I need to see how much this new can of resin covers. If it's just to almost the top of the tail fin, I'll stop so just the tip shows. My guess is I'll have to get another 16 or 32 oz can and I'll just cover everything up at that point. This stuff is pricy and thank goodness for 40% to 50% coupons.

Thanks hogfan!! Yeah quite honestly it's more of an annoyance than anything lol.

MC Each post it's looking better and better!! heheh love the fish!

Not much progress on the E7K but some nonetheless. Got the stripes on the floats painted. Just a few bleeds, nothing major. It was painting or these decals lol. I cringed at the thought of dealing with them. Couple pics fer yas.

Nice job SP34, paint always look better than decals.

I added another layer to the Zeke. You probably can’t tell the difference though. I also added some more fish above the starboard wing. The resin is up to the tail fin now. I may have to buy one more can of resin to complete it.
The next installment will be the completion pics.

Awesome Steve, in fact she looks pretty cool like she is. You could just build one half-submerged like this and have some gulls on the wing or even a couple swimmers.

@simpilot34,

Even if I knew the decals were new/good I would have painted the stripes on the floats. Just too much to go wrong with that many curves. They look outstanding!

@Steve,

The zero looks fantastic! How deep is the resin at this point? I ask, becasue I saw a FSM article where a builder did the same type of diorama with a Sherman tank. But, you could see through the resin to see the submerged tank. I wasn't sure if you could display this the same way. I'll see if I can find the article for you. The fish are a great touch!

Oh gee sorry, missed you somehow SP34. Sharp work on painting the stripes on the floats and good call - there's no way those decals would have comformed around the curve there.

BTW: I got the seat and IP installed in the cockpit and the fusilage cemented together. I'm now ready to insert the cockpit from the bottom and attach the wing. I sprayed the remaining aotake areas on the inside and seal her up- I think . Not sure I'll finish by the end of the year or not, seems everytime I think I'm squared away I see something else I need to paint...

Hey thanks Bruce, the floor boards are just a Prismacolor silver pencil. Cheap and easy to get it right where you want the silver, I think it beats drybrushing at least in this case.

Thanks Steve. I thought I'd added more stuff to the cockpit since last time and then looked at the earlier photos I posted of it and noticed I think it's mostly the same stuff again...

Well, hopefully I will have some real progress next time... Sad
