Can't remember...did anyone end up purchasing one of those high-end resin dino kits?

Those still interest me...too bad life got in the way of my modeling goals. 

Hey thanks Moff, it's just a dot of gold paint with a pupil drawn as a line from a black marker.

All the builds look great! The paint finishes look awesome (I especially love the Albertosaur's eyes). 

Bruce: I said 1/35th but it's probably larger. The figure is resin but I don't remember who made it. She (thanks!) is about 3.5in/9cm tall at the shoulder and 9in/23cm long. The real thing was about half the size of a T.rex, as one guy described the T.rex as a tiger and the Albertosaurus as a leopard. Most fossils were around 30ft/10m long and probably weighed about 3 tons.

Wayne: I'm really interested now in what you're cooking up!

i am working on a Ruissian KZKT-537L 8x8 for the Jan GB. just checked and my triceratops does not fit in the cargo compartment but the baby T-rex does, just barely. Hmmmmm another bizzaro thought. i do have a 2 page pdf on using feathers to make ferns. drop me a PM with your email if you want a copy.

I finished my Albertosaur last week and finally got the base done up yesterday evening and the photos taken this afternoon. And then ended up fighting the FSM website and PB for the last couple hours to get anything posted.... Honest to gosh neither of the browsers I use would post and I finally loaded up Windows Exploder, which is halfway working for posting...

very cool. i like the fish and the red on the dino. i suspect, like red usually is, it is more prominent in photos than in person. both are different from Jibbers which just adds to the GB.

i am thinking of extending this thru 2017 but i may be the only one with 8 primed in the paint cue.

I finally finished the Spinosaurus!

I really liked this kit, but, I did find that I missed a lot of seems. This was my first vinyl kit, and I used acrylic, enamel and lacquer paints on this kit. I didn't do a very good job with the ground cover, I may go back and redo some later on. 

Wayne, I apologize for taking so long. Thank you very much for running this GB. It was a lot of fun, and I learned a lot while building this kit.

I'm still not sure if Albertosaur is a boy dino or a girl dino. I've been calling it Big Al sometimes and Allie sometimes...

so much for having plenty of time in retirement. start 11 hour days as an election judge but after 08NOV it should be model building catch up thru the end of the year including dinos. 

i know i used a lot of oil washes and some COMART paints. they can create some nice effects, lots of light coats of different colors.

FINALLY got the paint on the ol' Albertosaur where I wanted. He's a little glossy, I'm going to hit him with a sludge wash and see if that picks out the detail.

Anyway I tried it on a small (4 inch long/ 10 mm) Carnotaurus I painted for a friend's Dungeons and Dragons game. Sorta like how the OD green came out. You guys think it looks ok?

Oviraptor from the Mesozoic 6 pack. primed in gray and layered brush colors using COMART transparent, opaque and creature paint set plus some oil paint. i thought knowing when enough is enough is difficult with washes and weathering but there is a whole new level. paint colors include green, purple, raw sienna, yellow, red, burnt umber. he actually looks better than the photos.

as usual i am all over the place. new interest du jour is French armor and armored cars. started building a camel, yes a Heller camel with arab and foreign legion soldier. very Beau Geste. They will match up nicely with a Panard 178 4x4 or RBR-11 8x8.

Since many reptiles have shiny scales I suppose you could spray him with a little semi-gloss maybe? Anyway good gosh I'd loved to have something this cool back when I was three!!! 

My Spinosaurus is finished and i'm a little disapointed with it. Because it was going to my grandson, I decided to give it a coat of flat varnish to seal it up but when it dried the colors had muted down and it lost over 50% of its overall hues. I spent a lot of time getting everything blended in nicely but that was all lost. I guess it's a learning lesson for when I do my T Rex so I didn't spend a lot of time with photos.

My friend Rob Schmidt did one of those too. 

on another note went to my second Rugby match today. getting into it though i think i am too old to play. HOWEVER we have the only Rugby desined stadium in the US in Glendale, a burb of Denver. denver has a team as does Glendale. they are the Glendale Raptors. since most of you know me i don't think i have to say anything else.

Thanks guys, Wayne I did the same as Steve but I started with a heavy CA that would give me some working time but quickly changed to regular CA with an accelerator. The fits are so tight that I had a few seconds to shove them in before they held which was plenty of time. 

I have less than a week before this gets packaged for my grandsons birthday so I better get started tomorrow. Theres so much detail to work with I'm still not sure what my pattern will look like but i'm closing in on a couple ideas.

Terry yes they are, and very easy to work with if there are any problems. I would't mind getting Spinny for myself.

Wayne, I can't speak for Terry, but I used thin CA, in fact the limbs are so tight I had to use a plastic hammer to get one or two of the limbs in.

Terry, that is awesome!!! I really have to learn to do my landscape as well as you. The fish looks OUTSTANDING. 

Wayne I chose to build two dino's, a T Rex and a Spinosaurus one of which I'm giving to my 2 1/2 year old grandson. So I gave him the choice and the Spiney won out, but he also wanted the base because he liked the smaller fish and the water. So thats what I did for my little buddy whose going to display it on his shelf.

The T Rex will go into a bigger diorama in a couple weeks but here are some photos of the finished base and primed Spinosaurus. I especially like the super detail on this small base (1/24 scale). Check out the old log and fish, they are some of the most detailed you'll find. I took some liberties with the color of the shoreline and fish coloring because I thought it looked cool.

I have the dino puttied and primed and now that the base is finished I'm starting on  Spiney's camo pattern. I'm still undecided on how to do it but my grandson likes the one on the box cover so I dont think I'll stray to far. One small thing, I think the fish came out better than I thought. I mixed a silver based metal paint with a hint of blue for my base color, then I used Testors green and blue metal paints for that reflective look.

Looks good Bruce, I can barely see the seams on the chest. And nice work on the fallen tree there.

Quick update on Chocosaurus, I mean Spinosuarus.

Here the beast is primered and ready for Easter:

Here is his chest plate finished. Turned out decent. I used Vallejo German Red Brown Acrylic Primer.

This is the log that was included in the kit, base coat of Vallejo Desert Tan Acrylic Primer, then pre-shaded with MM flat black enamel. I then coated with MM neutral grey enamel. Then applied a wash of raw umber. It's Winsor Newton Artisian oil mixed with 91% iso alcohol. Unfortunately, it still a bit tacky. next time I'll use distilled water with the Artisan oils.

I'm not finished with this log, I'd like to apply another coat of the wash, then dry brush with some brown colored pastels.

I'd like to start painting the Spinosuarus this weekend, and get started on the base.

Only nitpick I'd have is maybe add a little grass to the base or something for a little more contrast? Just seems to me too much brown but thats just my two cents.

I added the missing left front leg to the Trike and am using Military Brown as a base color. One thing I think I’m going to enjoy about this build is no one can say the color is wrong LOL.

I received the Trike's right fron leg on Wed, so I'll be finishing it up here shortly. Pegasus Hobbies was very easy to work with. Kudos Pegasus!

Little update here: Sorry, I still haven't done anything to Mr. Albertosaur beyond dusting him off. I have a few things that have been floating at about 97% done that I really, really, really, need to push over the edge and finish.

Ah krap, shame about the leg there! Hopefully they can get the part to you soon. Seam filling looks really good.

I had the catalog from 1971, and it was my bible at the time. I just looked through it and it brought back so many memories as a kid!

Blacksheep and Bruce- you lucky guys!!! As I said I missed those by only a few years. I was a BIG dino lover back then. I still have a bunch of my old books (which half the science has changed since then) and my old Marx dino and prehistoric mammal playset. 

I think I had the Styracosaurus/Spiked Dinosaur there though mine might have been the Pyro kit. It was packaged in a K-Mart box which I still have but not the actual kit.

My wife and her daughter (my step daughter) have had a falling out since Christmas and the Triceratops kit I was going to build belonged to my grandson. Well I'm not sure when this little dust up will pass, it usually takes a while, and we probably won't get to see the grandson during this episode as a punishment. At least not for the periods it would take to assemble and paint the thing.

Anyway, I may have to find something else to do for your build. But a year is a long time, so we'll see. My step daughter can hold quite a grudge....Children.

Thanks for the comment! I'll post more pictures of his chest plate tonight. I added a second layer of PPP, sanded and then roughed it up a bit. I'm hoping it look more realistic.

And no worries on the your build, I have three I'm building right now for GB's, and I still have to start the the YZR for your Japanese V GB!

I am going to prime the entire dinosaur with Vallejo German Red Brown primer. Then I will use Model Master enamels to paint him. I'll start with a pre-shade of black around the inner legs, under arms and under his jaw. Then I haven't quite decided on a grey scheme or a more brown/grey scheme for his body.

I plan to use the stand that was supplied in the kit, so he'll be presented like he looks in the box art.

I have the base and log primed, but I still have to work on the fish.

And I agree with you. A long time ago, my wife and I used to have a African Black Throat Monitor. He was about 25 pounds and 66 inches long. He was tame to us, never bit. But, he was tremendously strong. I could not image him at say 200 pounds, let alone 7-10 tons. it would be terrifing to have something like that chase you.

I really think I'm going to do another dio for this GB, but, this time it will involve some human content. Anyway, more on that once this one is complete.

Bruce: That does look really good! I bought my first tube of PPP (P3?) about a year ago and am hooked on the stuff now, I too love the ability to blend it with a damp cotton swab. 

Up to you of course but I'm thinking Terry has a good idea there on trying to make the seam there you're having trouble with into a scar. I can see two of them ripping into each others chests over a mate or territory or something like that. 

BTW: Sorry not much done here on Mr. Albertosaur. Working on my tank for Bish's '46 GB and trying to finish up a few other things. I haven't even had much time for my Zero for my own group build... 

I think Perfect Putty is no doubt "perfect" for this because of the raised skin pattern, but the spot in the photo looks to me like a older small scar. Are you going to spray the rest or a combo along with some hand painting?

Honestly I cant wait to see that beast painted up. I'm finishing a locomotive then I'm onto some dino's, working a little slow Bruce but we'll have some cool creatures here when this is all said and done. What a terifying monster that must have really been, just imagine that thing hanging around a water hole and unleashing hell on the rest of those poor unassuming dino's..... 

One more question, how are you going to present it?

Here is an update on my Spiny:

I filled all the seems with Perfect plastic putty, works fantastic! The cleanup with water is perfect for this type of model. 

I then sprayed primer on the seems to see how they looked:

However, his chest plate did not seat properly. so there is a bit of an edge:

And his tail did not seat well:

So, I added more putty to those areas to build up then sand down and hopefully even it out. Although the chest plate will not be extremely exposed:

I did have to add a second layer, which now makes it look somewhat better. The primer is currently drying. I'll have pictures soon.

So the Pegasus kits are vinyl? I've built one or two vinyl figure kits and a hair dryer does help out a lot, as Bruce said be careful and keep the dryer moving to keep from building up too much heat at one place and melting it. 

Ok, here's the Albertosaur. Yeah, it's assembled but it came molded together in one part, I just had to shave the flash off. The only assembly was cementing his shin and foot back on after my nephew dropped him. He's primed in German mustard yellow but I'm not sure how I'll paint him. 

Wayne and Terry, up to you guys if he's kosher. Sorry no box photo since he came in a plain cardboard box.

Mine had a tight fit, but I was still able to push the pieces into place without any trimming. Plus, the CA glue kind of acted as a lubricant when they were affixed permanently.  I would not trim, I would use heat. But becareful, this vinyl is very susceptible to heat. Use the hair dryer on its lowest setting when starting out.

Wayne: Looks good, great job there on the seams. Interesting ideas for a diorama, you did make me think of 'Valley of Gwangi' - wonder where I can find some vaqueros (Mexican cowboys)? 

Moff: Carnotaurus is cool, how can you not like a critter with a name like 'Fleshing-eating bull'? Plus that smooshed up nose gives him a bulldog like appearance plus the cool horns. I had to look up Majungasaurus but it's cool looking too. 

I did find my Albertosaur and Tamiya T-rex yesterday but things were way too crazy this weekend to get any photos. I see what I can do later. Not sure what I'll do, the T-rex is assembled and painted but I don't like how he came out (that's why I put him back in the box) so I might redo him if that would make him kosher for this GB.

I saw Mike Jones has a resin kit of Stygimoloch, aka Horned devil from the river of death, which must be the coolest name ever on the most butt ugly dinosaur ever! Too bad it's out of production assuming I had $160.00 bucks too drop on it in the first place.

I like how the Majungasaurus looks a bit akward with its weird body ratios, sort of as if someone stretched him out. 

I don't know how much money I want to spend on a dino, since if I end up participating, this'll be my first real figure painting attempt. On the other hand, they all look really cool. 

success on seam filling/ granted the triceratops doesn't have the scaley texture the raptors have. the hald seams were filled with red body putty and sanded carefully. the leg, head, and horn attachmernts were done with a lot of glue so it oozed out a bit followed by white glue and wet q-tips. didn't realize the mouth was hollow until i had it together so i packed in a bunch of model clay. if i stick some vegitation in there no one will notice. obviously the raptors are half the size of the ones in Jurrasic Park/World. the jeep got me thinking of a big game safari or HATARI neets JURRASIC WORLD.

Granted, I have not purchased from this store, so, I don't have first hand information. But, I am somewhat considering maybe something small! lol

I have to say though that Lindberg did send us a big box of kits for the kid's 'Make and Take' at our local IPMS show last year, in fact they've several times sent us stuff in support. I'd like to buy their stuff in support but not to bad mouth them it's just not us to current standards. 

 

I have to say though that Lindberg did send us a big box of kits for the kid's 'Make and Take' at our local IPMS show last year, in fact they've several times sent us stuff in support. I'd like to buy their stuff in support but not to bad mouth them it's just not us to current standards.

If those were the only kits out there I would seriously consider a different hobby. It's just too much of too much, theres so many great kits these days and several on the lower end that are still far superior to that company. Is that a dinosaur or a sausage?

Anyway, I stopped in at one of my only and favorite Hobby Shops anywhere in my area and they had a large section of Dino kits from low to high dollars, but for the money anybody wanting to jump in with a good kit at reasonable pricing, buy Tamiya. You can get the Dino as a stand alone or with a pre-made Diorama. Buying a stand alone piece offers unlimited Dio opportunities from small to large. My friend at the Model Cave says theres a lot of people that build and paint Dino's thats why he keeps a nice selection, so next time I'm there I'll take a couple pics of the different manufacturers and offerings. Maybe somebody will see some things we haven't talked about and hard to find online.

I guess Lindberg kits have their uses. Still even as a kid back in the '80s I went for Monogram kits, even back then I really didn't like the Lindberg ones very much.

Then again I kept bumping into these Lindberg kits with puffy bloated dinos that seem to either have injected way too much Botox or else stumbled face first into a giant beehive. Even old kits I grew up on though not scientifically accurate by what we know today still looked way better than these! 

 

Why anyone would want to buy a Lindberg kit is beyond me... 

Thats a very good price Bruce. The T-Rex dio i am thinking about is about £40.

Agreed, I checked all those Tamiya dio sets and that's a great price.

Thanks Bruce that would be my first choice too. I've used it for almost everything and never once had an issue, but with vinyl I was wondering about it adhering. I'm all about no sanding, this putty is a life saver. I've wrecked more parts by sanding either to much or to far. I think the detail on these Pegasus kits are second to none, never seen anything like it.

Yes, I used CA glue to adhere the pieces. I will use Perfect Plastic putty as a filler. This way I can wipe away the access with (hopefully) no sanding. This is the tutorial I've been using for information: Here   It's been very helpful, hope it helps you too.

 

I've just got some of that perfect plastic putty for my Arado. Had not herad of it before, its really nice to work with. I am thinking i might ditch my Squadron filler for it.

I'm very impressed with this kit. It still needs a little clean-up of the seems. And some filler where the body parts have been attached. But overall, this will be quite easy to accomplish.

These type of kits are for modelers who enjoy the painting part of modeling. And that's where all the builds will stand apart in this GB. I'm all for you getting a Pegasus kit, and I hope you do.

Wow, that Spinosaur has beautiful molding! I always assumed Pegasus' stuff was crappy, in the same category as Lindberg. 

I guess not! I hope people don't mind if I build a Pegasus dino too. Again, don't put me down for it yet, but it looks like a nice refreshing build.

I think you guys are reading my mind! That is exactly what I have in mind. I want the base to have a texture to it. Being that it is on a beach, sand would be most appropriate. I do like the supplied dead log, but it will need a little sprucing up too.

since my freehand camo job on the autoblinda went south today (Vallejo may not be the best paint for low pressure work) i pulled out the Tamita triceratops and got the legs, body, and head halves together and puttied. this should be easier than the raptors as there is no real surfice scales pattern. i may need to stipple some Mr Surfacer to get a scaly texture prior to priming.

Granted only the Spinosaurus was glued. Everything else is still loose. I forgot I promised I was going to build this for my daughter, so it will be for the most part OOB. But, it will depend on how realistically I can paint the base on whether I make my own base.

Tamiya has 1/35 triceratops, stegasaurus, raptors, new t-rex and older more erect t-rex, mesozoic critters, second pack of critters and i think a brontosaurus (though that may be pegasus 1/24)

I think i am pretty much setteled on the Tamiya T-Rex, the diorama one. And i have an idea for a scene thats inspired my Karl Logans WW1 tank memorial build he did recently.

Well, I dug out the Spinosaurus kit. I forgot how heavy these kits are! Anyway, still trying to figure out what I want to do with a dio. I'm going to take a few more days to come up with something good that will not leave the kit is pieces. LOL

Terry, I agree, you'd have to do some major surgery to Spiney's mouth to make it look like it's holding the fish. And we won't have to worry about too many cavemen telling us, "dinosaur wrong color"!

Bruce my first thought was that of Spiney holding the fish in its mouth instead of holding it down but the way Pegasus make them that would be somewhat difficult. I next thought of having a couple smaller dino's eating away at the fish when Spiney shows up and scares them away. I think I'd seen a dino croc somewhere, now that would be cool if it was partially underwater sneaking up behind them. I think this is what makes dinos so cool, theres so many ways to work with them and nobody around to say we did it wrong. 

Everytime I think of something I always cause myself more work.....

No need to be sorry, there are not a lot of Dinosaur kits, so I expected, and welcome, more of the same kit. Like you said, there will be mulitple colorations on these finished kits. I'm really looking forward to seeing them.

Now, on your question. I hadn't thought yet of what I wanted to do, but, your question sparked some good thoughts. I've seen a few of these kits built at the National convension and they build to look like the box art. The box art makes it look like the Spino is defending its catch. You got my creative juices flowing! Maybe it's defending it's catch from another Spino?!?! I'm going to have to think about this a bit more!

This is going to be a great GB! I'm glad you and Wayne thought of it!

No need to be sorry, I have no problem with you building the Spinosuarus, and I look forward to seeing it finished! I picked the Spino because that was the one my 7yo daughter (My future archaeologist!) wanted me to work on first.

I gave my grandson a Triceratops kit for his birthday. I was going to build it with him, and can enter it.

Not sure when we'll get to it though.

I'm in but I'm not sure with what yet. I have a resin Albertosaur and a Lindberg Velociraptor that I'd like to add feathers etc to try to make it a little more accurate.

I planned on doing two Dino's, a T Rex and a Spinosaurous both in 1/24. I just seen that we already have a Spiney on the roster but because of all the different ways of painting and displaying them, I think they'll look a lot different when it's all completed. Sorry Bruce I surely dont mean to copy on your entry. I think this will be a fun build for all of us.
