Bob:

I've built a few Bandai kits now and have thrown every type of paint I have at them--enamels and acrylics from Tamiya, Testors, Model Master, AKAN, MIG washes, Aztek, Polyscale, etc etc and none of the kits have melted yet.

Although I have read on others forums of this problem, so curious as to what causes it.

Hi guys, I have heard the same on other forums also. Although I do not think it is the hard plastic that has the problems but the softer plastic that is used for flexible bits and on the figure kits the joint parts, those are softer plastic also. Most of the ship and vehicle kits are made of the harder plastic so I would not think of any problems with any type of paint.

Thanks guys. The kit I read about with most of the problems was the AT-ST, and the problems seemed to occur after applying an enamel-based wash. I took the flat cutout pilot out of the box and primed it with Testor's lacquer primer and then brushed some Model Master enamel on it and he's holding up fine so far.

It could depend on whats used to thin the wash. I often use oil washes useing white spirits as the thinner. I have had issues with it eating right through AFV axel arms.

That's a good point Bish.  I read one thread where the person specifically mentioned the problem after applying a dot filter using white spirits to blend it.

Sorry for the silence! Unfortunately, the Snowspeeder build is stalled while I wait for some masking liquid to slooooowly make its way here from Missouri via UPS ground. Crying Good times. Should arrive next Wednesday.

The GOOD news is that Rogue One hits iTunes next Friday. Woo hoo! Propeller Propeller Propeller

Because, you know....seeing it three times in theater wasn't enough....or something.

Hope everyone is well.

Couldn't live without one. I don't watch much TV apart from the news, and i have a pretty big DVD/Blue ray collection, so that keeps me entertained when building.

Haven't posted in a while because I haven't made much progress on my X-wing. I'm looking to get back on it soon and I'll try to give some updates. But great jobs going on here so far!

Lol, I've recently got on a kick of watching SW knock-offs while modeling, watched 'Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone' and 'Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn' over the last week or so. Both on YouTube. Funny, though I've seen them billed as SW type space movies they're both more 'Road Warrior' type films.

Well, my classes are finally done and I have been able to grab some bench time, huzzaahh! So some work on the AT-ST has been done. I have been futzing about the cockpit area and finally decided, hey you are not going to be able to see much on the inside so I stopped where i was and just decided to close it up.

Closed it all up and it looks pretty good. I am a little concerned about the roof lining up with the front plate. There is a little gap. I have yet to use any glue so I might try some there and see if it helps.

Hopefully this will start rolling along pretty quick the head is just about done and that will complete the major subassemblies prior to painting.

No real complaints with the kit so far.

-Stephen.

That pit actually looks rather nice Stephan. I think its perfectly suffcant given how little you could see in there. Nice work.

Yeah, considering how little will be visible it's more than enough detail. Yes

Just got the May issue of the mag today, nice build of that AT-ST in there. I like the idea of the base to help get the legs aligned right for the head.

That looks great Stephen! The more I model the more I realize I'm trying to give the impression of something as opposed to how it "actually" looked, especially when what you can see is limited.

Thanks guys! Yeah I figured i wasted enough time on that and decided to close it up. It was good practice though. I went ahead and put the subassemblies together just to see how it would look and stand. Decided to put my old AMT build next to it for a little comparison.

Not to bad for what, a 30 year old kit? The Bandai is a little larger so definenitly different scales. The Bandai head seems to be larger and more narrow. I think you could use them together in a dio if you wanted to. Just make it a mark I and Mark II versions.

So, hopefully this weekend I can primer and start painting. I can't wait for my issue of FSM to get here.

God to see it closed up there. I am sure i read years ago that the AMT kit was 48th, i had considered convering some figures into Stormtroopers. Well, so glad i haven't built it yet, i would say that 1/50 somthing, maybe 1/55 scale. I see the ''toes'' are smaller on the bandai.

They would make a nice forced perspective.

That is neat seeing them together, I assume the Bandai kit is the more accurate though the AMT looks pretty good as well.

Or you could build the diorama in a forced perspective type situation, putting the smaller one behind the larger one, forcing g the perspective to add to the effect of three dimensions.   They both look cool!

Hey, guys:

After a few crazy weeks, FINALLY squeezed in some time at the bench today. Yay! Painted and weathered some of the markings. After these are done, I'll do a bit more assembly, seal it all with Future, then do the final weathering.

In the meantime, waiting for the Bandai AT-AT to be released (end of April) and still pondering how I'm going to tackle the Zvezda SD. Propeller

Thanks for looking, and hope everyone is well.

Nice job on the paint work PB. I like the chipping effect on those darker panels. How did you get that look.

Thanks, G and B!

Bish, I used Ye Olde Hairspray Method. You paint the base coat, then spray on a couple of coats of hairspray. Let dry for a few minutes, then apply the top coat (which in this case was the stripes, and using acrylics apparently works best). After the top coat is dry, you brush on some water and let it set for a few minutes (this loosens up the paint). Then I used a detail brush and toothpick to pick out the chips. Works pretty well.

That looks awesome PB! Last time I did the hairspray technique it didn't come out exactly how I wanted but I'm going to try and give it another go on the X-Wing I'm going to work on next.

Thanks, Bob...do it! What helped me was practicing on some scrap plastic with a couple of different paint types (Tamiya acrylics seem to work well).

That might be my problem, I pretty much just use enamels as they're easier for me to get a hold of. Plus I always seem to have issues spraying acrylics. Another issue might be that I sprayed the hairspray from a pump bottle instead of a can. I read after the fact that it's better from a can. If I don't get a chance to pick up any acrylics when I get around to the X-Wing I might try the salt chipping method instead. First I need to finish this Intruder...
