Front page build roster is updated, Tony.  Welcome to the GB!  I haven't tried Airfix's Wildcat; only built the Academy version.  I look forward to seeing how the Airfix version goes.  I've heard it's a good kit.

Thanks CMK. Over the years I built the old Airfix FM-2, The Frog F4F-4, an Academy F4F-4, a Revell F4F-4 and a couple of Hasegawa Wildcats too. The Frog one was binned decades ago, but I have the others. I'm hoping the Airfix one smashes them all :) Cheers Tony

Way to go!  I do wish someone would put out a decent F4F-3; I rescribed the wings in an Academy -4 a couple of years ago, but it's a lot of work.  I tried and gave up on Admiral's -3 offering for the Coral Sea GB.  What a beast!

Hasegawa offered an F4F-3 kit, but it still had foldable F4F-4 wings. I can't remember if the got the cowling right. Ialso have AZmodels G-36A and Martlet I in my stash. Cheers Tony

I've seen some after-market resin wings, properly set up for the -3.  I might give them a try in the future--although I'm not sure what would be the best glue to attach resin to plastic.

That is really looking great, Scott.

Maybe I missed it in an earlier post, but what paint did you use?

On the hull, I used Aclad primer for the black, and top coats of Tamiya Kure Gray and Vallejo Panzer Gray. The deck is MM British Armor Sand mixed with a drops of MM Rust, Flat White, and Flat Black.  All paint was thinned and misted on in layers.  I see a number of warship modelers using this technique and thought I'd try it.

I wish I had a decent camera to show the effects better.

Thanks, Scott.  I only have one Japanese sub, came with the USS Wasp kit.  Been wondering what to use for paint.  I usually go with Colourcoats for ships.

Scott

Impressive job on your flat top. I used a similar technique for painting my 1/144 Gato for the sub GB and produces great results.

Speaking of painting, I sprayed some MM hull red enamel paint with a few drops of bright red for the red primer color. Then decanted some cheap hairspray from the buck store and shot that. Double click on the images for closeups!

Tamiya IJN Grey and Green were sprayed on the aircraft. The cowling was sprayed Tamiya Nato Black with a drop of blue.

A few minutes later I used a small stiff brush and water to attack the hairspray.

Being early in the war I believe the weathering would have been subtle. The red primer and a hint of the metal pop up on heavily used areas. I also polished out the paint with a 2400 grit pad for an ultra smooth finish.

I read somewhere that Tamiya acrylics are fragile and scratch easily. Well, here I used a sanding pad about an hour after spraying the paint and got no such results. It sanded out even smoother to a semi gloss finish. I find the Tamiya paints to be VERY durable.

That turned out well PJ.  I'm still foggy on the hairspray technique, could you spray it out of the can instead of decanting it?  Or is decenting it able to give you more control applying it?

Thanks Scott

I like to use a drinking straw placed over the can spray button to decant into a small container. In theory you could spray it out of the can on to the model but the ab gives superior control.

As a matter of fact, I shot it out of the can first but it went on too heavy and used water to rinse it off then went with the decanted method.

If you are still foggy on the application then by all means let me know and will go step by step thru the process.

Gotcha, its too thick out of the can to you decant it to control the thickness.  I look forward to trying it.

Just remember to use an acrylic paint and to start chipping away when dry to the touch, usually under 30 minutes. You don't want to let the acrylic topcoat cure too much otherwise it will be very hard to get the desired effect.

One time I waited about 1-2 hours and the Tamiya acrylic paint was a bear to attack.

Thanks Bish. This method is also fantastic for doing white wash on armor. The effect you get is very realistic.

Got some more work on Valerie. All decals are on for markings from the Kaga.

The decals were provided by TJ form his Hasegawa spares so thanks again TJ! The tail lines were a bit short on this Fujimi kit

A 10/0 brush and white paint took care of the issue.

I brush painted the engine and prop with MM Metalizers and polished them up a bit then gave them a black wash of The Detailer and the back of the prop blades were painted MM Hull Red. Much of the engine will be covered up by the cowl so I did not spend too much time here.

Got the bombs painted . I added fin braces to the bigger one. Next step will be weathering and masking and painting the greenhouse.

 Added note:

I have been a faithful Image Shack user for the last three years and never had an issue their customer service support didn't address within a few minutes. Lately my pictures are sometimes blank on the IS page but will appear once I click on them but will go blank once I get out of the frame. I can also download pictures without a problem. I have reported the issue 3 times in the last week to the Customer Support link and only received an automated response, nothing else.

My subscription is good till Jauary 31, 2018 but looks like I will not renew if their customer support is so crappy and ignores a customer needing tech support!

I used Post Image to post these pictures on this thread and Im very happy with the ease of use the site offers and most important it's free.

Nice work on the Val PJ.

I just got my copy of FSM and it has a two page spread about the 1/350 Akagi.  I haven't got time to read it yet.

Thanks Scott. My markings are from the Kaga according to Hasewa. I believe the Akagi was a sister ship to the Kaga.

They were not sisters, but were built around the same time and started out as battle cruisers and spent most of their time together.
