Yes, and the Hasegawa SBD-3 kit comes with the twin .30 mount for the rear gunner. Those did not see service at Coral Sea, only the earlier single .30.

So Hasegawa equipped the SBD for Midway--then threw in a sheet of Coral Sea Decals.

Not the first time a kit maker has done something like this, but--Boo Hoo

Yup... I cant remember if the original issue of the kit came with Midway markings or not. I know they did re issue it with PE dive flaps and Bombing Six markings.

Interesting.  I have Hasegawa's SBD's in a dual kit, in 1/72, but haven't looked at it closely enough to tell what they did.

Been watching this one and now i have wrapped up one GB, i'll put myself down for this one. Don't have the kit yet, but decals are on the way. Not normally the sort of GB i would go for, but there is a reason i want to do this subjec for this GB. So i am in with the Academy 1/72nd TBF-1 Avenger. Should be able to start late July early August.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Welcome to the GB, Bish.  Glad to have you with us.  Whenever you start construction will be fine.

I probably won't get to do too much here, either, until I finish the Hampden for the RAF GB.

Man, you are killin me, first the Coral Sea, now a Midway GB.

If I had not sworn off GBs for the foreseeable future, I'd be in both. But I have too many sidelined projects needing attention for me to start any new builds for awhile.  But these two are way too tempting for me. I may jump in near the end of the year, and will certainly peek in to see the work here...

Stik, you have much more important things to do such as running the next Monogram Mafia GB. Stay on target!

Been thinking about this one......No one has signed up with one of ours yet.  Have Merit's 1/350 Enterprise CV-6, supposedly in her Santa Cruz fit, but it comes with TBD's, not TBF's.  I think the only difference would be an upgraded AA fit done after Midway, but not sure.  Doing a little more research on that now.  If it pans out, will jump in, but not sure I can make the finish date, even starting on day one as build time is limited.  She has as much PE as styrene.

I think I might be crazy and order a 1/700 Akagi.  That ship always had intrigued me.  It just looked so, well, tall.

goldhammer:  I know how long it takes to build a ship, even in 1/700--much less 1/350. If you start building and posting progress reports, but don't finish it in a year, you can keep on beyond the official closing date.

When I built Enterprise in 1/700, it took months and the work went on and on and on and. . .

So if you are interested, please sign on for the GB.

Thanks for adding me on, I think the Akagi would look good next to my Enterprise. I've never done a Japanese carrier before, so this will be really new for me.

I haven't done any ships except US Navy, but some of the Japanese carriers had some intricate paintwork--at least later in the war.

White Ensign Models shows Zuikaku in 1944, and it's eye-catching.

Glad to have Akagi in the GB.

Check,

Sprue Bros is having a sale on their Cyber Hobby kits and I found an Akagi Val.

I hope to pick it up before the sale ends and add it to the roster, but let me get it first.

Steve, are you aware of the canopy problem with the above Val from cyber-hobby? I'm not sure if an aftermarket piece can fix it, as the cockpit aperature is also funked up - unless you plan to go with an open display.  The closed choice has an odd taperd shape to it:

Thanks for the info and link Jack, I appreciate you looking out for me my friend. I'll study that site to find out the problem and if there are any fixes. I haven’t bought anything yet and won't until next week. I may have to go with the Fugimi kit because I really want a Val.

And both of those are supposed to be for a Val?  That's a pretty radical difference in both shape and size.

Reading the entire article, it appears the old Airfix, Fugimi and the newer Dragon all have problems with shapes of their respective and various areas. The Airfix and Fugimi kits are long in the tooth and can be difficult to find except on eBay and maybe Amazon.

Since I plan on displaying it with the canopy open and wings folded the Dragon kit seems the logical choice. I hope Dragon changed the color of the Hinomarus to a more appropriate red than what is offered with the Pearl Harbor markings.

I ordered the Costal Kits 1/72 carrier deck overlay and was going to display both Kates on but since they are (or will be when I finish the Hase Kate) putting an Akagi Kate and Akagi Val on it would be much more accurate and appropriate.

You know what? I just had yet another idea and ordered an Airfix A6M2b Akagi Zero with folding wingtips off eBay for $4. I don't know if it will fit on the base with the Kate and Val but they would make a cool display if it did for the IPMS contest in September.

So, you can defiantly add this to the roster Check.

That should make a good-looking display, Steve.

I've added the Zero to the front page.

Thanks for the contribution to the GB!

Were F4F-3's on board CV-6 at that time?  Got Trumpeter's 1/32 F4F-3 (late), has Guadal markings for a Marine bird, as well as supposed Enterprise '42.  A "17" number and both styles of national insignia (plain star and red center), as well as red/white rudder markings for theEnterprise bird. No "6" that would have designated VF-6, (if even used). Have read somewhere that she (CV-6) had gotten -4's by then.  If it would be accurate OOB, I'll go with it.

**edit**  looks like she got -4's sometime in late March/early April.   Arrghh.

The only F4F-3s involved in the battle were based on Midway with VMF-221.

Have her all sorted out now.......Please add me in with Trumpeter's 1/32 F4F-4, with Starfighter decals for Thatch's VF-3 bird.

Kit coming from Squadron, and decals from Scale Hobbiest, both just ordered.

I'd like to join up with the Monogram B-26, backdated to the short wing version.  Waiting for the Lone Star conversion set at the moment but Mike said he could make it happen.

Added you to the build roster, jeaton01.  Glad to have you with us, and an interesting subject.

What's the scale of the B-26?  I've had one sitting around for years in 1/72--which I've not gotten around to.  I think it's even "snap-together!"

It'll be the 1/48 scale Monogram kit.  That Snap Tite kit is a keeper, it is the only kit of the early short wing small tail B-26's.  That's why I need the Lone Star conversion set becuase the 1/48 scale kits are all the longer wing and tall tail versions.
