Thanks GM. Thats the aircraft i am doing. I'll be doing it before rather than after, but still nice to have some pics to check out.
I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so
On the bench: Airfix 1/72nd Harrier GR.3/Fujimi 1/72nd Ju 87D-3
That's really a good subject. i'm looking forward to her.
Modeling is an excuse to buy books.
Thanks GM. I have the decal sheet for Thatch's bird. You are right , no "F" or "3", plane # 20. Will do some searching for the ANA #'s, and see what pops up as close in MM or Tamiya (what is available here). Will talk to my LHS guy tonight at the club meeting.
Might have to try mixing to come close to the colors on the decal placement sheet if all else fails.
At least only have to have enough for one bird in the upcoming "Tail of Two Kittens".
Looks like a great plane, Steve. Kinda like those wheel spats!
Lots of differences in the paint-makers interpretations of Navy Blue.
Testors MM
Colourcoats (WEM)
Seems to be lots of variations in the real thing, too
Might be due to fading, repaints and touch-ups, lighting or the photo developing
Thanks for posting those check. Xtracolor has a Dark Blue Grey and a Blue Grey which from the looks of the lid is more like the Testors one.
Some great photo's you posted there.

I'm pretty stoked about all the subjects I have for this GB, and putting them all on the Coastal Kits base. I will start with the Kate first.
Steve
Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Check is that first model yours? It looks more like Intermediate Blue.
Your actual photos are pretty useful.
Thanks, y'all. Glad the photos are useful.
GM: yes, they're both mine. First one is Academy's F4F-4. I built it for my daughter at her request years ago; then received it back.
I haven't used MM's Navy Blue Gray since that build, because it appears too light to me--but maybe close to those faded out SBD's
The second Wildcat is Admiral's F4F-3.
Looking at the last pic and comparing to MM's acrylic 5N Navy Blue, they look pretty close. Intermed. Blue looks to be way to light. Might be adding a little Intermed. to the 5N to lighten it up and get a grayer tone to it.
Those are very helpful, thanks.
Would there be a problem if I entered this GB with a model that I am entering on a GB on another website? Both GB's start the same time.

That'll be OK. What will you be doing?

The bottom two photos are pretty washed out and color shifted. Not the best reference. But the Life photos are great reference. Now if the two F4F models were shot side by side under the exact same background conditions and lighting we might get a good idea of the two companies take on the early war USN Blue Gray. But just going off what we have here, the WEM version looks closer to the color when new as evidenced by the fresh number background area on several of the SBDs, while the Model Master version looks like a more faded version on the same aircraft.
F is for FIRE, That burns down the whole town!
U is for URANIUM... BOMBS!
N is for NO SURVIVORS...

So I could do a base coat with the WEM and then wash with the Testors to get a good match.
Probably could, Scott. And just to let you know, the MM example on the Wildcat is enamel. I don't know what their acrylic version of the Navy Blue looks like.
I have the acrylic MM. I could try it. Also see how the WEM enamel will react with the acrylic. My "limited" experience with WEM is that it tended to be a little hot on other brand top coats. May seal it with some Krylon flat sealer in between coats if it does end up being too hot for the MM.
Reason I have an interest is that I am still painting the airgroups for my Enterprise and I have the Lexington AG to do.
I've used acrylic washes (made of craft paint from Michael's, not Model Master) over Colourcoats without any problem, Scott. So I wouldn't expect any trouble--but, then: you never know!
Are these going to be little 1/700 planes?
Today being 2 June, the GB starts tomorrow:
SO--you can commence building whenever 3 June begins where you live!
Oh boy (rubbing hands together)
scottrc So I could do a base coat with the WEM and then wash with the Testors to get a good match.
That will probably give you a nice weathered effect.
I used Aeromaster's Acrylic version on my SBD & TBD
This is before any clear coats, washes, weathering, etc. which all alter the basic color
I watched the mailman as he was at the complex this morning, and he went back in toward my place....I think the -4 'cat came today, if so it will be party time tomorrow. And the pit PE should be here by the time the pit pieces are painted.
It can be both fun and frustrating to work 200 yards from where you live, can't check on it til I get home tonight.
Hope he brought you some good news!
The Coastal Kits base came in today. I'll be pressed to get three builds on it but I'll do it. Now I need to make a wood base to glue it to.
I take it that this base is a Japanese carrier deck? No camouflage stain, and the planking is fore and aft end to end. As opposed to the US style with the planking layer width wise and the wood would be stained blue.

Why yes, yes it is.
Hey Checkmate,
Am I too late to join the Midway GB? I don't have an subject to model just yet, but I will do a little research and get back to you.
Thanks
Damian
Damian:
No, not too late. The GB will be going on for a full year to give everyone enough time to finish, without rushing.
I'll add you to the build roster, and update when you decide on a subject.
Welcome to Midway! Glad to have you with us!
On the Bench:
1/10 Young Minatures 101 Airborn, Winter
1/48 GWH TBD-1 Devasator
Tamyia Tricatops
Yep, the -4 came yesterday along with the pit PE. Only thing left in transit is the carrier deck base. Will get some pics up of the kit come Monday or Tues.
