Thank you Bish, PJ, Rooster and Chad, looking good PJ, Chad and BD,

I added the dark green to the camo and will start on the red.

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

That's definitely a sore spot but youve come up with a great fix!  I have a few of these in the stash so I'm glad you posted this. Yes

Ok, I am nearing the end of my Condor Legion 109, so I decided to crack open an Eduard Fw-190 D9 in 1/48. Deep breath.

Another deep breath.

I thought I'd be cute and do the thing closed up and ignore all the innards forward of the firewall, behind the engine.

But I realized that the landing gear bay on this one doesn't have the normal cover (it's a late model), and you can see all those innards from the bottom. D'oh! So I built it up and will paint the underside bits so there's something to look at should any jerk ever shine a light up there.

My biggest concern is the wing root cannon bay fit. In short, it's a terrible engineering decision, but Eduard knows that, so I won't rake them over the coals here.

How I dealt with it:

Well, I could open them, but I don't want to. So Barring that, I added the cannon bay doors to the fuselage and glued them down, holding the wing in place to ensure proper alignment, if not perfect fit.

Next step was to add the upper portion of the wing to the fuselage. I've never built a plane this way before, but Eduard provided a pretty hefty connecting tab that actually makes this not so awful. I began by gluing only the front portion of the wing in place after cutting away all the parts where the cannon bay door will cover. I did not elect to use the supplied internal parts, as I saw no way that they would help.

Once dry, I glued the cannon bay cover to the wing at the forward-most joint, then got it as level as I could. After that, I worked my way down the wing, eventually gluing all but the rearmost part of the cannon bay cover.

Finally, I glued the rear portion of the wing to the fuselage.

Next, I added some sheet strene to the bottom of the cannon bay door from inside. This is just so the putty I will force into any remaining gaps will have something to push up against and not just fall inside the wing and annoy me.

So here we have my current progress, coated with a quick spray of Mr. Surfacing Primer 1500 Black.

As you can see, there is some work to do, but it shouldn't be insurmountable.

If it is, I'll fly it right to the trash can and buy a Tamiya Dora, even though I think the Dora is one ugly aircraft (especially compared to the awesomeness of the Antons).

Hello friends.  Update #1: Got the cockpit finished and fuselaged closed.  I must say, this new Eduard 190 is going together without and hiccups!  Nothing like their original 190's. Bang Head  Wings and gear bays are next.

Man, that looks sweet! I'm starting one of their original 190s. Wish me luck, lol.

Hey Chad... Eduard kits have had a few Oops's over the years, but they usually get right on them and resolve the issues. Yours is looking great! Excelent detailing...

falconmod - I'll get you added to the roster...looking forward to seeing that scheme!

PJ - Nice improvement with the rivets. I like the nice subtle look you got there. Nice surgery with the flaps as well.

Steve - The paint looks great so far!

Doug - That's brave of you to tackle a started buildBig Smile That engine came together nicely though. Drilling out the exhaust is always a nice touch.

I promise I have been working (very slowly) on my 190 and will have pics up soon. Got the canopy masking done and will be laying down some primer soon!

Man O man... Looking at the finished builds, going through the pages trying to get caught up... This is a busy GB, and everything here is amazing. I'm getting going with mine, I know some guys can build 2 or 3 at a time, I can't.. I get too confused and loose track of my train of thought! And I don't have much left to loose! lol.. So... This is going to be an Fw190 D-9 , 1/32 scale Revell kit with a mold date of 1990. I found an odd color scheme I personally have never seen, for Jg301 Late 1944. What makes it odd is the main color is RLM 81 Brown violet with Grey and Green accents and mottling.

Heres the kit, I found on Ebay, and as you can see the engine was built, and the pit and visable pit areas are green? Engine will have to come apart any waw, and I'll remedy the "Green" along the way, Likely with RLM66.

Gotta do something about this.

Little better, I'd like some tru-detail or such to replace them with but this is going to be mainly OOB.

Thats a bit better... Start on the pit next. Take care!

Cheers Rooster and Bish.

I added the RLM 76 light blue and 82 light green today, just need to apply the RLM 83 dark green tomorrow then I can work on the red underside.

Great mottling effects!

I admire your patience!  The results speak for themselves.  However, I'm counting the rivets on the prop hub and... just kidding! Big Smile

Can't wait to see your guys changing that engine.

TJ

That is one colorful Emil! Love the corful variety.

Steve

Great job on the paint. Looks like you are almost ready for decals.

I decided not to go plum loco with rivet counting on this one and will be adding just the basics to add a little more detail to the surface. It's a fine model but Hasegawa should have included at least some of the riveting.

Heck if Jerry Crandall built several of these and didn't do the riveting (at least on some) so that's good enough for me.

The Dora has a ton of riveting and I do mean a TON. I have an old Kookaburra Technical Publications  for the FW 190 and Ta 152 which has some really nice detailed aircraft diagrams showing all the riveting. It's easier to do this task prior to assembling the model so the next one will get ALL of the darn rivets.

I used my Verlinden scribing set for this one, taping down the soft metal ruler to use as a guide. Click on the image for a closeup.

The effect is subbtle and effective. The Micro Mark riveting set does a fine job using slight pressure as the wheel is rolled. I then hit the area with a 4,000 grit pad to knock down the raised plastic.

The flaps are set almost vertical and they just don't look right as is.

Using the UMM saw, I carefully made light cuts on the attachment points and bent them so the flaps would have a lighter angle.

I used some Plast I Weld on the bend points to weld shut the cuts and let them dry overnight. Now the angle is lesser and looks better.

The prop spinner was also missing the riveting

I carefully rolled the riveting tool on the spinner.

Now to do the rest of the wings and some riveting on the fuselage, again just the basics.

Can you add this 1/72 Fw190 F-8 to my list.  Got this one at a show for free, it was missing the left LG so waiting for Hasegawa to send me a new one, while i finish the plane itself.  It's really kind of a boring scheme but it will be good practice for mottling.

I too have been able to get some paint slapped on. This scheme I chose has a ton of yellow.  Nose, stripe around mid fuselage, stripe on back of wings, elevators, rudder, and lower wingtips

Mark - Very nice start, the pit is looking great.

Bish - Nice to see the main colors going down! Great start on that dio as well.

Steve - I also spent time masking canopies over the weekend and have to agree, they aren't my favorite step. The base coat looks good though!

Tempest - All that yellow should really make the camo pop...looking forward to seeing it come together!

Keep up the great work everyone!

Cheers Tony. I always think that Xtracolour 02 is a bit light, theres quite a contrast against the RLM 71.

I'm quite far behind with my Dora. I masked the canopy which is by far my least favorite thing to do and laid down a black base coat. Now I can get on with more fun things.

Question: assuming you don’t have a decal for it (and even if you had one, I don’t know how you’d get it to lay down right, no matter how much Micro-Sol, etc. you used) HOW do you go about putting a nice, even spiral pattern on the propeller hub? I’ve been struggling with how to figure this out for my FW-190. Or should I just say “screw it!” and leave the hub solid black?

Try using Solvaset. The Sol stuff is too weak.
