I'm done with the Kirishima. I must say it was quite the kit. For 1/700 it had outstanding detail and a very large sheet of PE. I placed it in my usual water base for display and after having my eyes crossed by the PE, rigging and the very small decals I completed it tonight.
I hope you enjoy.
BTW Gam, I didn't see the Ha Go on the wall.

So how do you do the white foamy water next to the hull?

Cotton and acrylic gel. It's more that I wanted but needed to fill the gaps between the flat bottom, since this was a waterline kit, and the base. I prefer a full hull to put into a seascape.

Looks fantastic TJ!

And much as I hate painting yellow leading edges the idea of painting the whole dang plane yellow gives me the willies...

The Hasegawa 1/48 J7W1 Shinden.

This one is a nice fitting older kit that will be some company for my Collect-Aire XP-55.  I just did a simple cockpit and let it go at that, and will close up the canopy to keep the lines clean.  The panel was pretty well molded so some silver dry brushing followed by Future on the dial faces took care of that.

There aren't any masks available that I could find so I made some of my own with a Silhouette Cameo vinyl cutter.  I took lots of pictures and used them to get the patterns.  Took a few tries to get everything scaled and sorted but I think it is going to work well.  We'll see when they come off.  I removed the guns as I can't see any in the pictures I have of the #1 airplane, the only one that flew.  Nice kit.  The dark green is going to need some help from details and such to make it more interesting.

An older kit but what you've got there looks good John.

And neat idea on building the actual test plane instead of a hypothetical operational version.

She's coming along great John.

I was going to ask, did you mask and paint the hinomaru? I really like your results.

Yes, they are painted.  Much easier than decals.  I just finished putting the detail decals on, some red borders and no step stuff.  Not much in the way of stenciling and since it is all dark red against dark green not very visible to me.  Drying now.  The masks for the meatballs are on the sheet I posted earlier.  My Cameo likes dxf files so that is what is used to do the cuting, not the jpg used to post here.

I could go further but I think it is good enough to please my museum curator (self).  At the end a photo with the Collect-Aire Curtiss XP-55 Ascender.  The J7W1 was a much less involved build.  Pitot tube replaced with hypo tube.  Landing gear is very stork like, bump the table and the model wobbles.  Getting the wings level was done by judicious bending of struts.  A quick fun build, this was.  6 days from freezer to fork.

John, that is pretty neat work on this one. Yes

Excellent use of your vinyl cutter - I have wondered how thick the vinyl - is it like what other manufactures use for their pre-made masks?

Jack

That turned out nice John. Yes The gear angles look strange. The mains placed forward like that and with such a long nose wheel strut just makes it look tail heavy, but I guess not.

John: Great job! Just got you posted. And wow, I can't get something built in six months.

The Japanese had plans to upgrade the Shinden to a jet engine which would have allowed them to ditch the silly over long landing gear.

Thanks, all.

Jack, I am using Oramask 810.  I think it is thinner than the material Montex uses, and it works around curves better.

MC - your Kirishima looks fantastic. As always your water effects are spot on.

John - I like your Shinden, and good idea with the scheme.

Cheers

Tony

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

This will be a very simple oit the box build, nothing special.

I added maskingtape belts and gave it all some shadow with a pin wash.

I also sanded down the raised detail on the float and re-scribed.

Sofar the dryfit of major parts is not bad atall for a kit of 1970's era

Ta, with my tamiya scriber, trumpeter "riveter" and dyno tape it is not to hard.

I will add rivets to the rest of the plane aswell.

Nope, not hard but it's still a lot of tedious slow work.

Kudos sir!

The surface detail was a little bland to my taste, even for a simpe quick build

IMG_20180406_190717 by Theunis van Vuuren, on Flickr

So I added rivet detail.

Got the IJN grey on, shading just about bleeding through.

It is a tad greener than in the pix

@John,

Your Shinden looks outstanding! Great job!

@Theuns

I like the detail you have added. Very well done.

I've progressed on the I-400, I got the hull glued together, but, I had to add some braces to the bottom half.

Then I primed the hull

Then I decided that I'm going to make this boat float. I need to get some foam and I'm going to put this in the water. It will be my first attempt at a water scene, and I'm kinda looking forward to it.

Hopefully more progress to show soon.

Cliff, If you don't mind, would it be ok to post progress pictures of my Type 4 here as well? Since it is a Japanese Tank.
