LA, that will be full orange, it's an opportunity to deviate from the typical green/gray/brown themes.

I tried to do everything on a fast track basis, cockpit, major assembly, etc. Unfortunatelly my planned todays day-off was cancelled by circumstances at work, so there isn't much hope of finishing by tonight. Nevertheless, the kit is a joy to build.

Piers: Love how she's coming along. Looks perfect except for yeah that slighty lopsided black cap on the front of the sponson.

And thanks, wasn't sure it was obvious what the melons were supposed to be...

Wrinkled,

Your Tsurugi is really good, it looks like 1/48 at least, very sharp and a great faded finish.

 TWA,

The Oscar is going really well, great colour variation top and bottom, nice id stipes and home defence patches. Can’t wait to see it fini – WHAT? Oh man that is a real bummer, any idea what caused that? As close as I have come is spraying a Tamiya clear lacquer over acrylics before I had let them properly dry, leading to cracking. Never had anything like it running though.

 Gamera,

Your watermelons are coming along nicely…

Best I have ever seen on this forum in fact

Zvezda,

Good luck with the Nanzan – orange or green?

The KV-107 continues to get paint thrown at it. First the fluoro orange and the red trims. Happy with how these came out.

Then the black details were done, looked good too…

Apart from the front of the sponsons, which are all over the place, so I need to sort those out before I continue. Not looking good to be done in time.

Zvezda: Sure! Good luck!!! If you can't finish you're welcome to finish up in JGB VIII. Still I'd love to see you finish by the end of the year.

TWA: AAARRGGGGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!   I know what you mean, been there, done that, got the T-shirt... It really chafes me when you've done all that work and it goes pear shaped in the end. Gee whiz, since you got this far you technically did finish so take the badge if you want to.

Well, I'm out. I might jump over into the next GB with a different kit. The clear coat completely ruined the paint job. I don't know exactly why, but the Tamiya Clear spray paint settled perfectly fine on the bottom, but when applied to the top, completely washed out all fading. About 10 minutes later, I noticed that it cracked all along the upper surfaces, and in some areas dissolved the paint to the point that it was smudging from it's own weight. I probably could have stripped it and tried again since I didn't have any decals on, but... this kit was like 12 bucks, and I was so sick of seeing it. I tore it open, grabbed the engine/props, cockpit stuff, etc for the spares box, and binned the rest.

Thanks for the interesting group build, even if I'm not completing anything.

Hello Gamera and Merry Christmas.

Can I join at this late stage? I placed a bet with myself that I can start and finish Tamiya's M6A1-K Nanzan in 1:72 before new year's eve.

BTW: I'm still moving along here. I still can't believe it's taken me a whole friggin' year to turn out two small figures... Embarrassed

Anyway, my latest excursion into scratchbuilding- hopefully will be done before New Years...

TWA: I wouldn't worry about the hairspray. She looks fantastic as she is! Great job there on the pre-shading and colour modulation.

Gamera

BTW when do the hairspray technique I put down 2-3 coats of hairspray letting it dry between each.

There's my mistake. I only did 1.

Hey everyone,

While it's still not technically impossible, the odds of me squeaking this thing by are pretty thin so I might have to roll the last little bit over into the new GB. (If that's alright)

What I've done to date- the airframe is assembled. I primed it with Tamiya primer, than wasted almost half a bottle of Alcald aluminium on it trying to get a metal base layer. I pre-shaded the bottom with black, and sprayed tamiya JA Grey with a tad of blue mixed in. Masked off, and went to work on top. I don't remember exactly what I used here, but it started with tamiya Dark Green, built up a postshading layer of two different light greens (light olive maybe?), rounded out with a heavily thinned layer of Tamiya JA Green. I finished it by mixing a bit of Tamiya buff into what JA green I had left in my cup, added even more thinner, and did some final fading on the upper surfaces with that. I was looking at the decals, and decided I wanted to minimize the number of them I was forced to use. I then masked off and sprayed the white home defense squares. This also let me introduce a bit of color variation, and let me fight some of those tonal crush problems. If I can get my hands on a decent circle color, I'll probably spray the hinumaru's as well.

I tried to do the hairspray method of chipping- after the metal, before the preshading. I don't know if I used too much paint and let it get too thick, but the hairspray just wouldn't activate. So, it'll have to be less beat up than I was planning, and I'll go back to the silver watercolor/silver on a sponge thing.

What I've got left:

-Red things (spinner, wheels, hinumaru maybe)

-wheel wells

-decals

-clear coats

-maybe a filter, depending on how badly the hinumaru sticks out.

-final assembly

Now it's just a question of whether or not I can get enough time in before the end of the year. I'm going to try my ****est, but it'll be close. Between the usual holiday stuff and a trip south I've got to take, I just don't know.

Anyway, I'm typing this in the middle of a lecture, so once I can get some pictures taken I'll throw them on.

Hang on Cliff, I gotta finish VII first!

After multiple layers of Tamiya white primer to hide the huge putty on the underside, I finally got sme gloss white on the top. Left it to dry for a week, then today I masked it off for the next step:

ANd was pretty happy with the result:

but there is plenty more that can go wrong - fluoro orange yet to come!

Piers: Looks nice! Always love to see one of these older somewhat rough kits built into a beautiful model.

Guys: My apologies, I've been on vacation/holiday and just haven't been on the forum much recently. I am back now and will be on more often. I'm going to try to get JGB VIII up by the weekend.

TWA
The cockpit looks great, your extra details and painting have lifted it well. Looking forward to seeing more of this one.
AA
Eric, having difficulty seeing some (not all, it’s a bit strange) of your pinterest pictures.
What I can see looks great! The uneven Green over the natural metal is very effective and sits very well with what the field applied camo looked like in the late war.
BSY,
Super result with the Spruce. Great paintwork, I cannot tell you have brush painted this little beauty. The rigging has come up well and the markings are all looking good. I like the outdoor shots in the Umbrian (guess?) sunshine. Is that the Mediterranean in the background?
The black and white photo also takes us back the age – lots of atmosphere in the photo.

After a lot of delays, the Kawasaki is closed up. Plenty of masking on the windscreen, and a load of filler on the bottom seam. Probably my fault…

Steve: I've been posting the new GB around Thanksgiving so I figured I'd wait till end of Nov. - early Dec. this year. And yes, I'm planning on running JGB VIII unless something horrible happens to me before next year.

Gam, are you going to start a thread for a JGB VIII starting soon? You know I have a TON of Japanese stuff just lurking around, and planning on more.

..And I like your addition for the sound insulation in the cabin - what is that material?

..

The material are a cheap chinese mat with a good texture for my use , but thinking to replace with green stuff putty work , the mat is too hard to fit as i need :)

Finally had the opportunity to take finished pictures of the Ki-9 :)

She looks really good! Like the green camo, the ground crews just applied the stuff willy-nilly over NM aircraft so that looks just right.

Almost done now; decals are on, just have to spray it with Dull-Cote and then remove the masking from the canopy...
