I've decided to add a huge bow splash, mostly because the hull number decal kinda fell apart while trying to remove it from the carrier paper LOL. the easest way to hide it, is under water.

Oh yeah......  After the splash on the Puffer launch, Steve has that down pat.

Steve, she looks GREAT! Once the markings are laid down it really pulls the ship together.

Do you have the sea diorama done already or is that still down the road?

 I'm intriqued by the hull plating on the NC. Definitely want to watch how you do that.

OK Captains, I ahve completed the paint and ready to start the rigging.

I've also started on the North Carolina. To simulate the hull plating, I added stretch sprue and some Evergreen strips. I'll sand the hull down some to smooth it out

Bakster: Sorry to hear about your issues with the Wisconsin. How goes the recovery efforts?

 

I've been making very slow and modest progress on the USS Oakland. Got most of the superstructure done. The resin/brass 5 in gun turrets arrived and I've been very slowly drilling out to fit the barrels. A slow and delicate process. Also been assembling the 20mm single mount guns. That's tedious and eye straining. I will get some pics up in the near future. 

 

 

 

Hi Joe, progress is slow but moving forward. Tonight I did some painting on the upper decks. I will be glad to reach forward progress again, still in repair mode.

Can’t wait to see some images of what you have done, and it is great to be on a GB with you again. It has been too long.

 

Thank you for the sentiment. The fun of building along with you is indeed mutual. It has certainly been a good while since I've been active in a GB.

That is some tremendous looking progress GM. Sharp work indeed.

I know what you mean, I'm not looking forward to making the 16 Bofors and 18 50's from PE for the North Carolina.

Steve: You have done some exceptional work on your Spruance. I am really impressed with how your paint scheme came out. The black basing worked out well. Spectacular work with the PE and detailing.

Here are some more pics. I toushed up the deck, mast and elecrtonics. Next is the decals and weathering.

I'm also doing some study on the North Carolina, getting ready to start on her. There are several things I want to do to the hull and plating before I work myself to the deck.

The Spruance.

Oh, wow. There is a lot of excellent craftsmanship on display here. I'd go individually, but I'm afraid I might inadvertantly leave someone out.

Things have finally slowed down at work (I work retail) to where I can get some meaningful bench time in, so here is my proof of unstartedness pic.

So far I've cleaned up some minor mold lines and flash from the hull. I've also started drilling out the portholes, something of a boring process, but necessary groundwork. I'm also going to use the Gold Medal PE set, and see where this snowballs to from there.

Thanks guys, I was sidelined to finish the 48 hour build but can get back on it now. I need to finish painting the mast and deck fittings, then decals, weathering, rigging and work on the base.

Steve that's pretty sweet. Crazy to watch you paint different colors with all the parts installed! Shadows look cool.

No, not new, old. the past modern ships had the mast tops painted black to help hide exhaust soot from staining the paint, but lately the navy went back to grey.

Steve: Looks great! The different shades of grey really worked out well! I never noticed the tops of the masts being black, is that a new thing? Sorry, kinda ignorant on modern warships.

Picture update. The haze gray is on. I still have to to touch up the haze grey in several places as well as the black then do some minor weathering.

In the mean time I am going to start on the North Carolina.

I generally use a darker shade of the colour I'm using for the model as a primer- but I haven't tried black basing yet. Guess I need to give it a go. 

Even with the bad lighting she looks sharp. Looking forward to some better photos!

I like black basing for ships, it adds shadows where the spray doesn't get to, pluss motling.

The first coat of the Haze Grey on the port and some on the starbord. No masking, just airbrush. There is quite a bit left to do. The oil canning didn't seem to work as well as I hoped so I'll have to try again on another subject.

Bad lighting. The diffrence between the deck and bulkhead color IS diffrent.

Looks good. The black base works out well for a undercoat.
