Viet Nam War Aircraft Group Build
Posted by jeaton01 on Saturday, November 16, 2019 6:20 PM

This Group build will be for all fixed wing aircraft that were in or over Viet Nam from January 1965 to December 1975.  Any country, 1/144 thru 1/32 scale.  No rotating wings, fixed wing only.

The GB will run from November 1 to May 31, 2020.  Crossovers and previously started builds welcome.

Here's a list of aircraft.  If you can make a case for another type, we will all learn something discussing it.

I'll build the MiG 19 Farmer.

1/72 I think Bilek but I have to go out in the yard to the barn. Not a good idea tonight with 1/2 bottle of wine in me.

This in my opinion was the best operational jet fighter in the world until the Phantom II went operational.

Well, that 1/2 bottle would keep you warm, Bill.  Welcome aboard!

I know KP and Heller did 1/72 MiG 19's, I have those two.

I wasn't aware the F-14 was in the Nam. I looked it up and sure enough, VF1 and VF2 covered the withdraw from Siagon.

I have a Tamiya 1/72 F-14A. I may have to switch targets

Don’t forget:

General Dynamics F-111A bomber

Boeing KC-135A tanker

Lockheed EC-121 ELINT

Douglas/On Mark Engineering B-26K bomber, I mean “attack aircraft”

Lockheed YO-3 observation (there is a resin kit out there)

And I think the Pilatus Porter was also used in the liasion role.

Oh, and nix the Mi-8!

So many choices!  I’ll have a look in the stash and see if I have a low headache kit lying around.

John,

I would like to join in, if it is not too late.

I would like to build a 1/72 scale A-1 Skyraider that I have in my stash, I will have to check the manufacturer.

I'm in for the Vietnam Era GB. I currently have an almost completed 1/48 Cessna O-1 Bird Dog on the bench for finishing touches. Also, a 1/48 kitbashed Bell UH-1F USAF Huey on the bench for finishing touches as a diarama, but I realize this model doesn't qualify for the GB. First new project will be a 1/48 North American Rockwell OV-10A Bronco in USAF colors. Looking forward to seeing our GB gems.

I'll jump in with a 1/72 F-101B from Revell. Should be the perfect way to keep my sanity while boring out portholes on an aircraft carrier for another GB ...

Hi, Mach1.  I don't think any F-101B's made it to Viet Nam, only RF-101C's so far as I have read.  Hasegawa has a 1/72 kit for that variant.

Oops.

Hmmm ....  I have the Kitty Hawk RF-101C. I'd wanted to do the Sun Run NMF, but I'll check the other schemes. Otherwise I have a couple other options off the list. Let me check on them and I'll let you know.

John-

Thanks for the PM.  I have Ritchie's F4D about 1/2 done (1/32 Tamiya) and an Airfix B57B/RB57E.  If I get to either will jump in.  For now will sit back and watch.

I have replaced the earlier list of aircraft with one which is based on Rene Francillon's book on Viet Nam aircraft and suggestions offered here, and updated the list of participants.  If I missed you please let me know.

John,

Put me down for Fujimi's 1/72 EA-6A.  The EA-6B also flew over Vietnam. I'll do the B if there's time.

I'd like to join please. Put me in for a 1/72 T-37 Dragonfly, as I have it in my stash. It may change if I can pick up something a little bigger.

Cheers

Tony

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.
