An update on the XFV-1. 

Just filling and sanding and a little assembly.  Since the tail fins have to support the model I cut into the fins and the fuselage with a dremel saw blade and made brass biscuits to add strength.  Obviously the original tabs are obliterated.  The exhaust scoop was further shaped using Aves Epoxy Clay.

Judging by the Airfix forum, they seem quite popular amongst some modellers. There seem to be a few who are not so keen on the new kits with all the detail. But for me, these are the reason i stopped nuilding Airfix nearly 30 years ago, and i am very glad they have come into the modern age. An up to date Storch would deffinetly be welcome.

Yeah, it means we didn't do anything but stick it in a diffrent box.

That tells you how much I don't know about the Harrier. BTW I do have an Airfix GR7A/GR9A harrier in the stash. Don't know when that happend

Ye, thats what the guy on SPAm said. I had assumed, wrongly of course, that they were close don the ground and open in flight. Will teach me to check referances.

Yeah the intake blow-in doors are a bit of Harrier trivia.  They are not spring loaded, so when the engine is shut down, the upper doors hang in the open position and the lower doors fall into the closed position.

When on the ground with the engine running, the doors all open.  In flight they all close due to aerodynamic pressure.

Construction of the Shar is complete so ashide from masking the canopy and intakes, its ready for primer. After some advice from a member on another forum, i realised i had use dthe wrong intakes. Airfix offers 2 options but doesn't explain which option should be used for in flight or on the ground. While i was able to remove the intakes, i could not take them apart. So i ordered the resin Pavla set which was swiftly fitted. The doors and hatches will be done off the kit.

And while its in the paint shop, i'l get to work on a tractor for the diorama.

Early 90's. Got it I have 2 Harriers in the stash, one is the USMC the other I need to check. 

Are you reffering to the Harriers Steve. Both the navy's FRS.1 and the RAF's GR.3 were deployed south. The RAF aircraft operated from the carriers. The Sea harrier FA 2 entered service in the early 90's.

The Ba2 was used in the Falklands war was it not?

Thanks Steve. The GR.9 doesn't have that issue, but then thats a completly different tooling. But this has its origins in the FRS.1, so going to have to check that.

Oh wow Bish, nice progress! The pit looks incredible. I don't have an Airfix Harrier but I'll remember that intake issue if I get one. 

So taking a break from the U-Boat, i am building 2 Harriers together for 2 different GB's. I've never built a Harrier before but as i have 5 Airfix kits in the stash, i think its time i caught up. So for this GB, its the 72nd seaharrier FA.2.

I'll be adding a few bits of PE including an Eduard PE xset and Quickboost resin exhausts.

I started out with geting the pit parts prepped and painted.

Not a lot of detail in the pit OOB, all the instruments are adde with decals. After painting i just went straight to the PE.

Then the pit was fitted and the fuselage put together. No fit issues here.

You can see in the pic above that there a rim of plastic inside the intakes. I didn't know it at the time but this would be a problem. Its not suppossed to be there and will have to be removed. Its not flash as its thick plastic, and there is no indication on the instructions. As i went to fit the iner part of the intake attached to the fan i realised it neeed sanding back. I did this just enough for it to fit. But when i went to fit the outer part of the intake, i needed cutting all the way back. The left hand intake is fitted here, but not the right.

The wings did no on nicely, no issues there.

There was some filler needed around the intakes. tail is fitted just need to do some clean up of the filler.

I have been compelled by some strange for to request to enter this GB.  I would like to enter a 1/72 Airfix Vintage Classic release of the Storch.

I have 3 of these kits now

1/32 Hasegawa Storch

1/48 ESCI Storch

1/72 Airfix Storch

I really wanted the new release from Academy of their 1/72 Storch  but can't find it anywhere! 

I'm sure there will be putty needed and sanding galore.

I know what you mean. After the S-Boat, i thought the u-boat was gouing to be a quicker build. But 7 weeks in and i still don't have the hull together. I really need to take a break before fatigue sets in and i want to get the harrier done before the end of the year. So now is a good time for a break.

Bish, no problem. I need to finish the Apache for your British Army GB before getting back to the FAA F-35. And of course the Akagi keeps trudging on.
