Actually Marcus it's I who have to thank you. I noticed that in one of your posts you made a reference to shapeways, regarding some of the armaments you purchased for the Kronprinz. I had not heard of this mob and checked them out. WOW. Tonight I am putting in an order for the stuff they make for the Emden. Thanks mate!

As tiny as the model is the fit issues must be quite bad to be seen, but it looks like you are off to a fine start.

Marcus, the Kronprinz is looking superb.

Mongoose, the Tirpitz dio is one of the best dios I have ever seen. So much work and and an awsome finished product.

I'd go with steel unless it's molded in wood. I have absolutely have no idea except through others builds and World of Warships. No, WoWs isn't my go to source for anything, but their team doses strive to get details correct. Looking at wood deck manufacturers, some have the entire deck wood and another doesnt .

That's all the input I can give although the original drawings do seem to support my hypothesis.

Speaking of the Emden, here are three photos of a wooden scratch built model I was given a number of years ago. It is very old and until a few days ago was on loan to a museum where it became very dusty and suffered some damage.

Sorry folks, but I've been away from the computer and the work bench for a little while and obviously there's  a lot to catch up on, but for the moment I have a 'help' question. As some of you may know I have decided to do build a revell U Boat and the Revell SMS Emden. It is with Emden that my problem lies. In the photo below I have shown the deck as it is portrayed in the kit. My concern is that there is very little timber represented on the model. What little there is shows in the midship area and where the main armament is located. My research has been unable to confirm if this is correct. I would have thought all of the main deck would have been timber. Can anyone help with this?

Steve, I'm going to dip my toes into the frigid North Atlantic with the 1/72 Revell S-100.  The Eduard PE set is in the mail so that'll make this a tad more interesting. 

Update on the SMS Kronprinz.

Finished with painting both superstructures and masts. 

Still some touch ups to do and add the searchlights but the build is now down to all the little detail stuff and then the ship boats, cutters, etc..

I have seen several photos dated 1915 showing the white circle on the turrets and red paint on the rear funnel while out on patrol.

Question for you, what do you clear coat your MM Enamels with? I used a satin varnish and I can't keep the lint and other misc stuff off of it. Any advice for me?

I clear coat with Future floor polish but before I do I brush the parts with a static free brush and blow air across the part.  I inspect the part while it is still wet for lint and stuff.  I then leave the part in the paint booth and cover the opening with a lint free towel until dry.  Even then it seems some hair or dust manages to land on the wet coating before it dries..LOL.  Every painted piece gets a coat of Future to protect the paint making the piece ready for weathering. 

Oh I forgot, I also turn off the ceiling fan before spraying.  Here in southern Texas the fans are on all of the time.

Putting down a Satin varnish is the very last thing I do to any model to dull and flatten the finish paint work.

MM....got to love any of the guns I've seen from Shapeways.  Works of art in their own.

Mongoose... Nicely done project.  Every time you look, you find something else that you go "WOW!"

It's May 31st 1942. The spotter planes alerted Tirpitz to incoming British aircraft. This time they decide to head for open ocean. The Kapitän zur See (KzS–Captain at Sea) Karl Topp is rushing back from the traditional Norwegian red farmhouse. A young Kapitänleutnant readies crewmen to meet him and prepare the Tirpitz for combat operations. The crew is scrambling to remove the camouflage so they can get underway. Cranes are bringing in planes and boats. Crewmen are pulling the tarps off boats. One young swabbie is being berated for sitting on dein Hintern.

The little control house at the stern mooring was painted this color light blue in 2011 so this brings a small element of the present to the historical scene. The ship itself is all out of the box. Red House and moorings are handmade. Water is foam, gesso, lacquer & acrylic paint, and gloss medium & varnish. Scenic Woodlands realistic water & water effects plus a myriad of their ground cover over an old railroad bridge cut in half and repurposed. Of all things my favorite element is the red house lol Overall this is the best piece I have done to date. I'm really happy with how it ended up turning out. The biggest SAVE was the water. My original waves came out all drooped and fell flat. I put Gloss Gel  Medium on a toothpick and put crests on all the flat spots. Whew, what a save I think but I'll let you be the judge from here

Here is a photo of the 88mm gun that will sit of the deck of the rear superstructure of the SMS Kronprinz.  Looks a little plain don't you think.

So I pick these up from Shapeways the other day.  I would say these are not so plain.

They fit inside of the gun shields just fine. 

Finished painting the superstructures and just waiting for the paints to dry and cure (All of the paints are Model Master enamels).  Should have some photos Monday or Tuesday.  Once I get them in place things should progress more quickly.

They are recognition markings so they don't get bomb by their own air force.  The germans also paint their secondary funnel red so they won't confuse their ships with an enemy during combat.   Before the fleet arrives back at base they paint the funnel back to it's original color.
