Thanks, the fit is pretty much as expected and fits well.  Your on your own if you want toi mask the turet and the center dome on the nose though.  They tell you to use a liquid mask.  The instructions are clear though and couldnt imagine doing this greenhouse canopy in the scale any other way.

Looking good 68gt, let me know how those eduard masks work out. I have the same kit and would not mind building it one day soon.

I havnt made the progress I wished to do since I'm still working on the house renovation.  Its me, myself and I working on the house.

Anyways I have a wing painted but I have to figure what I'm going to do with the hole left from the deleted forward gun.  The wing is painted in the 70/71 as is must have been replaced from another aircraft.

Robert I love the masking and the look of the colours. Excellent! Last time I built this I spent 5 night modelling shifts masking the canopy. It was interesting... 

Mighty fine job done on the camo Robert, looks spot on.

On these type of schemes I use masking tape to copy the patten on the model. The masks that I will use are the canopy ones that save TONS of work and time. I have learned from experience to stay away from the vinyl ones due to poor adhesion on curves.

I got to thinking over the weekend why waste time and money on single use masks of futzing around with the scanner and printer for a small scale kit?  Just free hand it!

The canopy will be a tad more difficult though...

I like scaling up the instruction sheet and then cutting out the camo outlines and using them as templates to cut tape in the right shapes. Of course they make precut masks it saves you a lot of time and effort even if they cost more.

Some updates from the weekend, all parts are attached, other than the canopy, antennae, and MG.  Next up is the paint.

The camo on this variant requires hard edged geometric shapes, I am debating on some precut masks, or trying to scale up the instruction sheet on my scanner and cutting my own...the age old issue of time versus cost.

I tried to contact him by making a small paypal payment a week ago, and have not has a response.  I have used PayPal with Martin in the past.  I do hope he is OK.

Sadly between other stuff and pollen allegies I still haven't gotten much more done on the the JU-188. I have puttied and sanded the heck out of the fuselage. There's a 1mm or so step between the cockpit/nose portion and the rear and I really don't want to sand all the detail away trying to get them to mate properly.

Sorry guys, not been keeping up with things the last week or so.

Splendid work Bish! As usual I love your dioramas! 

Not much to show here. The Tamiya P-38 I'm building for Steve's Lockheed GB is going so well it's been dragging me off to concentrate on it... 

I got the Stuka wrapped up this week. After some light weathering with Flory wash and exhaust staining it got the mat coat. I am very pleased with how the worn look to the sand paint came out. The instructions said to paint the spinner sand but of course it should be blue. And i used some AM decals for the wheel spats as the kit ones were white, and of course they should also be blue. The bomb load are Kora resin bombs. I was inspired by a photo of a banking D-5 on the Russian from from one of my books. It had this bomb load, SC250's with fuze extender's and the bombs were a mix of green and blue. I had to paint the white on the antenna mast as there are no decals for this.

And then onto its base with 4 figures and a Kubel.

Nice to get this done. Next up with be the Tante Ju, but that won't be for a bit.

Sound slike a lot of work going into that Gamera.

Just got to finish off some figures and i'll get the pics up of the Stuka.

Sorry still not much to see since I'm still puttying and sanding, rinse and repeat but here's some idea of the modules I'm assembling the kit as:

Ye, took a couple of the finished aircraft last night. Just got to finish off the base and sort some figures. So should be able to wrap this up in a couple of days.

I have buil;t a few Dragon aircraft kits but only in 72nd and i really like them. It does sound like they put some thought in when they designed your one.

Bish: Any new photos? Looking forward to seeing how she looks with the decals on.

Still hacking away here. The fit ain't the greatest. But I really like that the kit is buildable in modules. Just like an armour kit where you can build the lower hull, turret, tracks etc in sections and then add them all together. Not sure if Dragon as a mostly armour company designed the kit that way or it's just part of being buildable as different versions of the 188. In any case I'm building the fuselage and each wing as a separate part. More photos when I have something worth photographing.

Its bound to be Dragons instructions, at least you were able to remove them.

Going a bit slow here, the way the instructions show it I ended up putting the landing gear in the opposite wings. I had to yank them out and reverse them. Great to see Dragon instructions were confusing even back then...

I got the Stuka painted with the European scheme.

I started masking for the sand before i remembered to get some pics.

I then added the desert camo. Some profiles and the kit instructions have the sand right along the side. But photo's don't bear this out. My main referance, Classic Colours Luftwaffe Colours Stua Vol 2, has 3 decent pics of the left side along with a nice profile based on careful study of the photo's. This only shows RLM 79 in 2 patches under the canopy. These patches seem to match the areas where extra armour was fitted to the D-3. But many aircraft, includeing this one, don't have this armour. I am woundering if the ground crews may have removed it and patched it up with the 79. The kit instructions don't match what little can be seen of the top of the left wing. So i went with a combination of the photo's, instructions and guess work. There is no top down image of the tail, but there does seem to be any 79 there so i left that. The photo's do show the 79 is well worn on the wing. So i replicated that (first time doing weathering like this on an aircraft) by dry brushing the enamel paints and then useing 502 oil paint, there German Orchre is quite a close match. I'm quite pleased with how its looking. I also added the white tail band.

I'm going to leave the oils to dry for anotehr couple of days then polish some rough areas and seal before adding the decals.

I got to the point that I was knocking the stupid little PE levers and knobs off while installing the seat belts on the Ju-188, lost my temper and had to put the thing aside. Sorry keep promising photos but she's a bit of a mess right now. Will get some up when I've calmed down a little.

Got most of the major parts fitted to the Stuka including fitting a quickboost  compass and getting the wings on once the fuselage was together. No major fit issues as i expected.

Then got the canopy on and all the sub assemblies ready. As you can see i am leaving the undercarrage off. I've also learnt my lesson when it comes to adding actuators and airelon balances to soon, have had to scratch more of those than i care to remember, so i am painting them seperatly.

It got a primer coat yesterday followed by the undersides being painted, so will be able to mask off in a day or so.

Tony: Wow, now that's a new one for me. And she can't be very big- looks like a small plane and in 1/72nd.

68GT: Ohhhhhh very cool! Doing the 188E-1 here but bigger! That looks cool.

I got the last couple items the cockpit PE, seatbelts, and the replacement decals for my Ju-188 and got a little work done on her. It's been so frelling cold though I've been coming home from work and just getting under a blanket reading, watching TV, or fooling around on the PC. Guess I need to turn up the heat and try getting something done on some of the models I have in progress... 

Man this thing is tiny! Spent several hours dry brushing and detailing the knobs and thingies in the office.

The sides are also amazing 

Next will be fashioning some belts from wine foil and detailing the IP and bombardier position.

Thanks gamera. I do have both of the G versions in the stash but have already built the Academy ones. I'll be useing the Fujimi kits to build other versions, probably a D-1 and D-8.

Bish: Nice!!! I built the tankbuster version of the 1/72nd Fujumi kit waaaaaaay back- I think it was the '90s and thought it was a gem of kit. Looks good so far, looking forward to more.

Made a start on the Stuka last weekend, this is the kit, i am doing the subject on the box art, S7+AA.

The instructions say it a D-1, but the photo's clearly show the thicker armoured pilots windscreen of a D-3.

I'm useing an Eduard PE set along with a few other AM parts. The Aires resin pit designed for the Academy kit will fit in this, as i found out when i built a D-5, but as i had the Eduard set anyway, figured i would use it. The PE set is missing some detail thats in the resin one, but i'll use some parts from the spares box to fill it out.

I got the PE parts fitted painted and dry brushed. Also drilled out the hole and fitted a quickboost resin compass.

I also got the wings together, cut out the molded landing light and fitted the guns. There are 2 options for the wing guns in the kit. One with exposed barrel tips for the D-1 and another with extended fairing and covered opening for the D-3. But photo's show that both variants could have either. I am guessing the covered fairings are to stop dirt getting in to the barrels on take off, and the covers do seem to be fited more often to aircraft in dusty enviroments, such as the desert. The photo's of the aircrfat i am doing are not that clear, but it does look more like the covered option so thats what i fitted.

Wow, I'm really impressed on the amount of detail that cockpit has on that Revell kit.  I can't wait to see it painted up.

 

I have been researching the pit color and looks like RLM66 is the correct one. I was hoping to use RLM02 which is lighter and makes details easier to see but the color changeover started in the summer of 41.

Nice work PJ. that pit is well stocked with detail. I compared mine to a hase kit when i got it and could not believe how nice the revell kit is. That pilots seat always looks odd to me with the crocked head rest.

That does look nice PJ. the cockpits in this scale are getting better and better. Bish, I've ordered a Revell 1/72 Junkers F.13, as I couldn't get my paws on a civilian Ju 86. I'll have to cook up some decals on my own to build an Australian civil aircraft. It should be here in a week or so, but I'll partipicate here in the meantime.

I pulled the Ju-188 out and looked her over. I had painted some of the parts- the wrong colour and had dry-brushed the heck out of them with silver paint. Nothing will have to be taken apart thankfully- just painted over.

Other than the camo and the complex canopy the kit should be pretty straight forward. I think I'm going to order a simple PE set for the seatbelts and the cockpit details though.

The decal sheet looks pretty bad, lots of fractures in the clear areas, I've seen this happen in some old Dragon decals in my spare decal drawer. No big deal, I've found some aftermarket ones from a Czech company. If nothing else I figure some from a Ju-88 ought to fit. There's pretty simple, just the German crosses and letter codes. No swastikas though, so I'd have to replace them in any case.

As its now Jan 1st 2022 here in Blighty, i declare the GB open.

That Revell 88 is a great looking kit.I compared it with one of the far more pricey Hasegawa kits and it certainly holds its own in regards detail. I also like the way it was made giving plenty of options for other variants. I#m surprised Revell have not done more, but was very glad they released the A-1.

Thanks Bish and Gamera. Yes the kit has a couple of very cool looking schemes. I like the Afrikabraun with Dunkelgrun blotches, of 5./Lehrgeschwader 1, Eleusis, Greece March 1942. The other scheme is the box art with the standard splinter camo that was stationed in Cicilia, Italy.

Thanks Bish, I've been looking around and formatting a plan of attack. Looks like I may end up replacing the kit decals. But at least now I know what paint I should be picking up.

Gamera, that scheme looks similar to the late war nighfighters, which were RLM 76 with 75 mottling. But given thats a bomber and looking at the pattern, i;m thinking more of 76 over the standard splinter scheme. But thats an unusual one for a bomber.

PJ, look forward to seeing that. I'm going to build the same kit when i do the 32nd A-1, though i am not putting the A-4 into the GB. I do like German aircraft with those Balkan markings.

I pulled the kit out and was looking though it to see what paint I needed and just great- Dragon doesn't give paint names and numbers but only how to mix them with Gunze paint. I have the interior paint I need so I won't need it for a month or two but I'd like to have the exterior colours on hand. I can look it up but figured someone would know the two topside colours off the top of their head? 

I have the 1/48 ju52, but where can I put it after its finished? The box was a lot bigger than I had thought it would be.

Will do AA. I have the revell boxing of that kit and am keen on seeing how it builds.

That's exceptional news mate. I've been looking forward to building it since I got it a couple months ago.

Will do Steve. I actually like the Dragon 234, i had no major issues with mine. I did wire up the IP as the rear can be seen through the canopy, that was a bit tricky. I often hear negative remarks about Dragon 72nd aircraft, most of which date from the early 90's. But i have built a few and have not had any major issues with any of them. I did the B-2b recon version, the same kit you have and i have 4 more of their 234's in the stash. I might try and fit one into this GB myself if time allows.

Actually, could you replace the HE 111 for the DML 1/72 AR-234 B2. I'll keep the 111 for a possable Heinkel GB in the future.

Reading a review of the DML 234 kit, it's not the friendliest kit, needing some major gap filling and bad canopy fit, but workable. 

The 262 is perfect. The He 162 used a BMW engine. It was the Ar 234 that also used the Jumo. I'll get the 262 on the list.

Ah, thanks Bish, I forgot about the Jumo 004 engine.  In that case I have either a Me-262 or He-162 I can build.  I think I'll start with the Me-262 (Hobby Boss, 1/48 scale), and if I finish it, I may go ahead and do the He-162 later.

Thats correct Steve. I got was slightly in error when i said they had jumo's from the E version. I got confused because the he 111 variants jump from F to J then P and finally H. Buth the E and H had Jumo's, the other types had diferent make sof engines. Of course that kit can be built as a P or H.

I have this. Apperently the P was powered by the DB whereas the H was Jumo powered.

What do you think? Either that or I can get an 88 or 87 or even a Tante Ju 

I'm sure you guys can find somthing. And remember, it doesn't need to say Ju 0n the box. An Me 262 or early Bf 109 or 110 will work. The He 111 from the E onwards had Jumo engines amongst others.

68, look forward to seeing that. There is some nice stuff at Aim's. I have thought about getting one of their 32nd Ju 188 conversions but haven't got aroudbn to it yet. I have used their decals on a He 219 and they were rather nice.

I'd like to clear off the bench and start things off fresh for the new year. I'm thinking an Italeri Ju-188 in 1/72 would be a nice way to start. The only question is which kit to build out of the pile. Have some Aimes decals so that should help narrow things down a bit.
